SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\n#####

SUMMARY:Cooking Along the Great Stage Road
DESCRIPTION:WANT TO KNOW WHAT’S COOKING ALONG THE GREAT STAGE ROAD? \nFIND OUT ON SUNDAY\, MARCH 1 \nKingsport\, February 10\, 2020 – The 19th Century gave us the telephone and telegraph\, the internal combustion\nengine\, four new Constitutional amendments\, and the birth of professional baseball. It also gave us some\ninteresting food\, some of which we are still enjoying today\, and when the Netherland Inn-Exchange Place\nAssociation hosts its annual dinner on Sunday\, March 1\, 2020\, food from that era will be explored\, and\nsampled\, in a lively evening guaranteed to whet one’s appetite. \nThe three sites that make up the Association – the Netherland Inn\, Exchange Place\, and Hammond House –\nwill be taking us on a guided gastronomic tour of the 19th Century. Janet Gillenwater from the Inn will\nexamine the very early years\, when salt was being ferried down the Holston River from Saltville\, Virginia. \nHeather Gilreath (assisted by Emily Myers and Megan Grisenti) from Exchange Place will look at the middle\nyears\, when far too many homes had meals cooked and served by slaves. And Mary Fanslow from Hammond\nHouse will close the century with the Victorian era\, when a meal could be enjoyed by the light of the new\nelectric light bulb. Each site will pass out yummy\, bite-sized samples of treats that were fashionable in its time\nperiod\, and recipes popular in all three eras will be found as part of the colorful table settings. \nAnd there will also be music! The Junior Apprentices Old-Time Band\, made up exclusively of members of\nExchange Place’s unique students who are learning about history and restoration at Kingsport’s living history\nfarm\, will demonstrate their talent by playing “between courses\,” as it were. \nThe dinner will be held at the Press Room on Roller Street in Kingsport\, behind the Food City on Clinchfield\nStreet\, beginning at 5:30 pm. A 21st Century buffet meal will be provided by Food City. While a small portion\nof the meeting will be devoted to Association business\, including the election of officers for the new year\, one\ndoes not have to be a member of the Netherland Inn/Exchange Place Association to attend\, and so this\ngathering is quite open to the general public. Please note that reservations are required\, and must be\nreceived no later than Wednesday\, February 26. You may contact either Sara Selby (423-349-\n8372 or sarabselby@gmail.com )\, or Marshall Adesman (423-357-5352 or\nmsadesman@gmail.com \, or send in a check for $20 per person to: \nNI/EP Association\, P.O. Box 293\, Kingsport\, TN 37662 \nThe Netherland Inn/Exchange Place Association is a non-profit\, 501(c)3\, volunteer-run organization\, whose\npurpose is to contribute to the better understanding and appreciation of the early history of this region\, and to\npreserve the important landmarks (which also includes the Hammond House)\, antiques\, relics\, and documents\nas a part of our local\, state\, and national heritage.

SUMMARY:Chuckey Depot Museum: My Ties to the Railroad: Stories and Artifacts from the Line
DESCRIPTION:Chuckey Depot Museum at Jonesborough to Open New Exhibit My Ties to the Railroad: Stories and Artifacts from the Line \nThe Chuckey Depot Museum at Jonesborough has just announced the opening of a new exhibit\, My Ties to the Railroad: Stories and Artifacts from the Line\, which will be the museum’s first\, guest curated exhibit. The Town of Jonesborough will host the exhibit opening at the museum on Thursday\, March 5 at 6:30 p.m. The exhibit will run through August 2020. \n\nThe guest curated exhibit features artifacts from train enthusiasts and railroad workers throughout the area. The Chuckey Depot Exhibit Subcommittee and the Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society asked the local community to submit their favorite train related items and share why those items are their favorites. Many of the artifacts come with a personal story\, like a train engine alarm clock that Gary Price received as a child. Looking at the clock every night sparked his interest in trains and led to his future career with the Norfolk Southern Railroad. \n\nPer its mission\, the Chuckey Depot focuses on regional railroads in its exhibits\, like the Southern\, Clinchfield\, and East Tennessee and Western North Carolina Railroad. This exhibit gives the Museum a chance to showcase items that come from all over the country\, including a map of railroads in Ohio and a stock certificate for the Pittsburgh and Lake Erie Railroad Company. \n\nJoin the Chuckey Depot for its opening exhibit reception on Thursday\, March 5 at 6:30 p.m. Or visit during regular hours\, which are Monday\, Thursday through Friday\, 1 to 5 p.m.\, Saturday\, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday\, 1 to 5 p.m. \n\nThe Chuckey Depot’s original home was just down the road in Chuckey\, TN\, and now sits within WC Rowe Park in Jonesborough. In an effort to preserve the building\, it was dismantled and re-erected in Jonesborough\, where it opened as a museum in October 2017. \n\nChuckey Depot Museum is located at 110 South 2nd Avenue. For more information\, please call 423.753.1010. This project is brought to you by the Town of Jonesborough\, Heritage Alliance of NE TN and SW VA and Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society.

SUMMARY:Birthplace of Country Music: Real Folk Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL EXHIBIT: REAL FOLK\nMAR 6 – 12:00AM TO AUG 30 – 11:59PM\nREAL FOLK: PASSING ON TRADES & TRADITIONS THROUGH THE VIRGINIA FOLKLIFE APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM EXTENDED THROUGH AUGUST!\nVIRTUAL TOUR & ACTIVITIES \nSince 2002\, the Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program at Virginia Humanities has brought together over 150 experienced master artists and eager apprentices\, ensuring various art forms are passed on in ways that are conscious of history and faithful to tradition. All forms of Virginia’s expressive culture – from the Appalachian hills and the Chesapeake shore to new immigrant traditions brought to the state – are represented\, including letterpress printing\, mandolin making\, African-American gospel singing\, quilting\, old-time banjo playing\, Mexican folk dancing\, classical Iranian and Persian music\, broom making\, and more. The master artists comprise some of Virginia’s most celebrated practitioners of folk traditions both old and new to Virginia\, and the apprentices learn their chosen craft not in classrooms or lecture halls\, but in their traditional contexts\, such as local dance halls\, churches\, woodshops\, stables\, and garages – making the passing on of these crafts even more meaningful. \nReal Folk: Passing on Trades & Traditions through the Virginia Folklife Apprenticeship Program gives viewers an inside look at these traditions and the people who are keeping them alive\, helping to ensure that Virginia’s treasured folkways remain in good keeping for years to come. \nThis exhibit\, on display at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum March 6—August 30\, 2020\, was produced through a partnership between the museum and the Virginia Folklife Program. \nA variety of complementary programs will be offered to go along with Real Folk; keep an eye on our events page to learn more.

Never afraid to wade into political territory\, Hoge has expressed his observations and frustration with human rights issues over the last fifteen years\, and as conflicts continued and intensified\, he refuses to remain silent. Border police. Political corruption. Poverty. Gun control. Indifference to others’ suffering…Hoge confronts them all head-on with his latest release in October 2018\, My American Dream\, and is the fiercest\, angriest and most heartfelt collection of songs he’s released to date. Currently\, he is working on new material. Stay up-to-date at WillHoge.com. \nMary Ann Kaylor Griffiths\, Publicist \nPublicity@kaylorgirls.com
