SUMMARY:Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star
DESCRIPTION:The Jackson Theatre will present Vernon Dalhart: First Country Music Star on Friday\, April 17 at 7:00pm\, in partnership with the International Storytelling Center. This special evening of words and music celebrates one of the most influential recording artists of the 1920s and 1930s.\n\nVernon Dalhart was the first artist to record a million-selling country hit with the two-sided 78 RPM disc featuring “The Wreck of the Old ’97” and “The Prisoner’s Song.” Both recordings are enshrined in the Grammy Hall of Fame\, and Dalhart was later inducted into both the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame. A prolific artist by any standard\, he made more than 4\,000 recordings between 1916 and 1939.\n\nDespite his massive impact\, Dalhart’s legacy has often been overlooked. Many legendary performers\, including Dolly Parton\, Marty Robbins\, Johnny Cash\, Willie Nelson\, Doc Watson\, Bill Monroe\, and Mac Wiseman\, have covered songs first recorded by Dalhart\, helping to carry his influence through generations of American music.\n\nDrawing on five years of research\, music historian Dr. Ted Olson will share the story of Dalhart’s diverse career and explore why his contributions have faded from the spotlight. Jack Hinshelwood\, a multi-instrumentalist and singer\, will provide the live soundtrack\, performing faithful renditions of classics such as “Wreck of the Old ’97\,” “The Prisoner’s Song\,” “Home on the Range\,” “Jesse James\,” “The Big Rock Candy Mountains\,” “My Blue Ridge Mountain Home\,” and more songs that helped shape early country music.\nThis event is part of the Jackson Theatre’s ongoing collaboration with the International Storytelling Center\, highlighting shared programming rooted in storytelling and music.\n\nTickets are $15 in advance and $20 day of show. Tickets and more information are available at thejacksontheatre.com.\n\n#####

Scottish settlers established themselves in the Appalachian region of several states\, including North Carolina\, Virginia\, Tennessee\, Kentucky and West Virginia. In these isolated areas\, the old songs of love\, loss\, murder\, ghosts\, and earlier times were passed down by oral tradition\, expressing timeless themes and ties to the past. Over time the melodies and words changed creating variations that are still sung today. Licko\, a North Carolina native\, will be sharing her observations on variants and versions of Scottish folk songs that exist in Appalachia.Awarded “Celtic Album of the Year” by Celtic Music Radio and nomination for “Trad Album of the Year” by TradConnect\, Jennifer Licko has a strong relationship with the music that traveled over with the Scottish settlers. \nSpending her youth as a competitive Scottish Highland Dancer encouraged her interest and love for the Scottish traditions. Jennifer is an exceptional vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who plays the piano\, guitar\, and bodhrán (Irish drum). After living almost a decade in Scotland and Ireland\, Jennifer realized the strong similarities between Scotland and North Carolina…and her music began to branch out into a genre that honors those connections. \n“I believe that the music needs to connect with the audience through our shared emotions and experiences for us all to feel that which can only be experienced through music.” \nJennifer works as a performer\, educator\, and advocate for cultural inclusion in education. She founded and operates the non-profit Highland Echoes carrying out three large-scale projects to support the mission of cultivating awareness and preservation of Scottish culture\, she runs The Cultural Classroom providing resources and support for teachers\, and she has her own podcast called Respecting Diversity in the Class. \nJennifer is currently living in Brazil as an ex-pat\, raising two trilingual and extremely energetic boys\, and a very sweet white lab named Bailey. In her free time\, she enjoys running and being by the ocean in any capacity. Probably not important to a professional bio\, but Jennifer’s favorite color is aqua\, her favorite food is mint chocolate chip Ice cream (yep\, that’s real food)\, and her Starbucks choice is a grande Americano. \nFor more information about Jennifer’s music and work\, check out her website.\nThe event is free\, but pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:Conversations That Matter
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center Announces November Conversations that Matter \n\n“Conversations that Matter” is a monthly online series from the McKinney Center. In each “Conversation” two local guests will explore their own culture and perspective\, and talk to each other about what makes them unique\, discover their similarities\, and explore their differences. They will look at where their lives might intersect personally and in the community. The goal of each “Conversation that Matters” is for guests and participants to hear real stories\, from real neighbors. \nFor a special Veterans Day focused event in this series\, the McKinney Center will feature two local veterans\, Suzanne Emberton and Paul Braxton. This conversation will be moderated by McKinney Center Advisory Board Members and volunteers\, Michelle Treece and Brittany Butler. It will take place via Zoom on Thursday\, November 11\, at 7 p.m. Register at McKinneyCenter.com. \nSuzanne Emberton is a resident of Johnson City. The Army stationed her husband to teach ROTC at East Tennessee State University in 2013\, and they decided to make East Tennessee their forever home. She quickly became involved in the local community\, joining the Johnson City Junior League\, serving on the Fund Development Committee and Diversity\, Equity and Inclusion Task Force. In May of this year\, Emberton was elected Chair of the Washington County Democratic Party. Her paying job is developing training content for software applications at Medable. Emberton is a mom to four\, step-mom to two adult children and has one grandson. She’s passionate about politics at all levels\, with a big focus on DEI initiatives\, LGBTQ+ issues and affordable and accessible healthcare for all. When not working or volunteering\, she enjoys spending time boating and sailing on the lake and cheering on ETSU Athletic teams\, especially basketball. \nPaul Braxton is a Jonesborough resident\, and an Army Veteran who served his last assignment in Johnson City\, Tennessee. He is an avid photographer as well as a member of the Jonesborough Yarn Exchange and StoryTown Radio Show Program. Braxton has collected stories from community members and performed in many of the larger annual community plays at the McKinney Center. SUMMARY:Colonial Harvest Celebration & Fall Fibers Show
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Heritage Celebration   \nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park  \nNovember 13 & 14\, 2021  \n  \nColonial Harvest Celebration & Fall Fibers Show  \n\nAutumn is in full swing. As both the temperature and the leaves continue to fall\, we begin to think of the many holiday festivities that wait in the coming days. Over two hundred years ago it was quite the same for the early frontier settlers. On Saturday\, November 13 from 10:00 to 4:00 and Sunday\, November 14 from 10:00 to 3:00 Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area will become the scene of a Frontier Harvest Celebration as we enjoy a time of friendship\, thanksgiving\, and recognition of our patriot ancestors. \n             In Colonial America\, before Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday\, each colony or community observed days of thanksgiving usually after the harvest had been brought in or after a significant military victory. Join the Washington County Militia\, host living history organization at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area\, for their monthly militia muster and a colonial “Harvest Home” as they celebrate the Overmountain Men’s victory at the battle of Kings Mountain! \n            Activities throughout the weekend will include programs and demonstrations of 18th century frontier life including open hearth cooking\, flintlock musket and rifle demonstrations\, music\, Revolutionary War era battle tactics\, and much more. The weekend will also include a special Veterans Day program on Saturday\, November 13th to honor the combatants at the Battle of Kings Mountain and our current veterans and armed service members. \n            In the Visitors Center\, visit fiber artists from the Overmountain Weaver’s Guild as they demonstrate spinning\, weaving\, and all things fibers. The building will be alive with activity as vendors offer a selection of holiday gifts.  Whether you are a seasoned fiber artist or would like to learn more\, this educational event is a must for all ages! \n            This is a perfect opportunity for the entire family to visit one of Tennessee’s finest state parks and enjoy a day immersed in history and fun. Admission is free so don’t miss this unique event showcasing Tennessee’s rich heritage. During your time at the park be sure to experience the interpretive exhibits as well as our book and gift shop to make your visit complete. \n\nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park is located at 1651 W. Elk Ave. Elizabethton\, TN 37643. \n\nFor additional information about this and other exciting events at the park please call 423-543-5808 or visit us on the web at www.sycamoreshoalstn.wordpress.com and tnstateparks.com/parks/sycamore-shoals. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park\, where you too can “Share in the glorious cause of Liberty”!
