SUMMARY:Scarecrows of Main
DESCRIPTION:Bigger\, Better\, Best is the challenge to our community as Main Street Greeneville announces the seventeenth annual “Scarecrows of Main” competition to be held in downtown Greeneville. The contest is being sponsored again this year by Broyles General Store\, which is located at 730 West Main Street.  Bigger\, Better\, Best means more entries all over the downtown area; Better displays than ever before (and that is saying something) and to be the best contest and event in Northeast Tennessee if not the state.  Let’s do this.  The Scarecrows of Main 2026 contest is a great way to enjoy a trail of sorts\, selfie spot\, family outing and art appreciation all in one. \n\n\n\nEntries are not limited to only those within the display area.  Entries must\, however\, come from within Greene County or be a current 2025-27 member of Main Street Greeneville.  This contest is open to all ages\, individuals\, families\, groups\, clubs and businesses.  Each person\, family or group may only enter one time.  There are 4 different categories: Residential\, group/organization\, business or youth.  \n\n\n\nThe display area will include the eighteen-block downtown area known as the Main Street District along with Main Street from the 11E Bypass to Crescent School.  Entries from outside the display area will be assigned a location within the area where they may place their scarecrow. \n\n\n\nLet your imagination run wild as you create that scarecrow you have always wanted to make.  Could it be that we will see a straw ballerina\, lawyer\, shopkeeper\, etc. hanging out in downtown for the next couple of weeks?  Scarecrows should be family friendly – whimsical\, humorous\, mischievous not frightening.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\nNo Entry Fee – Pre-registration Required \n\n\n\nPre-registration IS required thru the Main Street office\, 310 S Main St\, beginning Wednesday\, September 9 through Monday September 21 at NOON.  Display locations will be assigned and confirmed at the time of registration.  Those who do not reside nor have a business in the display area are encouraged to also enter the contest as limited additional display space is available on a first come first served basis.  Only those registered will be eligible for judging.  Contest rules\, District boundaries and entry forms are available now on the website www.mainstreetgreeneville.org Blog page – Seventeenth Annual Scarecrows of Main Contest.  If you need printed copies\, please contact the Main Street Office at 423-639-7102 and we will be happy to get them to you. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nDisplays \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nAll entries must be in place by 7:00 am on Monday\, October 5th.  All entries will be on display to the public from Monday\, October 5th through Friday October 30th.  Further information regarding scarecrow locations will be announced via the media prior to judging. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nJudging \n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\nThe public is asked to vote for their favorite. You may vote once daily in each of the four categories: residential\, group/organization\, business or youth.   Voting will take place Monday\, October 5 through Wednesday\, October 21. Details regarding how to vote for your favorites will be announced.  Awards and certificates will be given to the winning entries.  Winning entries will be marked and identified with yard signs.

SUMMARY:Stories 'n More
DESCRIPTION:If you’re looking for the heart of storytelling in the town that basically invented the modern revival of the art\, Stories ‘n More is where the magic happens. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHosted by the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild\, this weekly event is a staple of Tuesday nights in Tennessee’s oldest town. It’s less of a formal performance and more of a warm\, communal gathering where the oral tradition truly breathes. \n\n\nThe Atmosphere\nThe vibe is intimate and authentic. Held at the International Storytelling Center (or occasionally nearby local venues like the  McKinney Center)\, the evening feels like sitting in a very large\, very talented living room. \nWhat to Expect\n\n\nDiverse Tellers: You’ll hear from seasoned professionals who have graced national stages\, alongside guild members honing new material. \n\n\nThe “More” in the Name: While the focus is on spoken-word stories\, you’ll often find the night peppered with poetry\, acoustic music\, or personal tall tales. \n\n\nA Living Art: Unlike a recorded podcast\, these stories change based on the energy of the room. It’s interactive\, raw\, and deeply human. \n\n\nThe Details\n\n\nWhen: Every Tuesday night. \n\n\nTime: Usually kicks off at 7:00 PM. \n\n\nLocation: International Storytelling Center\, Jonesborough\, TN. \n\n\nCost: Generally\, a small donation is suggested at the door to support the Guild’s mission. \n\n\n\n\nPro Tip: Jonesborough takes its storytelling seriously\, but the Guild keeps it accessible. Whether you’re a local or just passing through\, it’s one of the most “authentic” Appalachian experiences you can find without needing to hike a trail.

SUMMARY:Tales of Our 250th: A Jonesborough History Variety Show
DESCRIPTION:Tales of Our 250th: A Jonesborough History Variety Show – A House Divided\nTales of Our 250th continues at the Jackson Theatre on October 22nd. Before America’s one hundredth birthday\, the country was faced with a great conflict\, the Civil War. It pitted families and friends against one another as the country debated enslavement\, states’ rights\, and what the future of this nation would be. In his 1858 speech before the Republican National Convention\, future president Abraham Lincoln famously proclaimed\, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” This program at the Jackson will delve into the lives of local people during the Civil War and how the conflict impacted Northeast Tennessee as a whole.\n\nThe evening will include a performance of scenes from The First and Last Town in Tennessee that share the stories of A.E. Jackson and his family and Adeline Deaderick. Dr. Tom Lee\, Associate Professor of History at East Tennessee State University\, will speak about the Civil War on the regional level. Following his talk\, the 52nd Regimental String Band will perform a concert of Civil War era music. “The 52nd String Band\, organized in 1990\, consists of four musicians playing a variety of instruments of the period: banjo\, guitar\, fiddle\, mandolin\, washboard\, drum\, harmonica\, etc.\, as well as fine vocals and harmonies. They are authentically dressed as Confederate/Union soldiers or civilians of the 1860’s. Four popular albums have been recorded and are available on CD: Voices of Shiloh\, Voices of Gettysburg\, Dissolution Wagon\, and Civil War Grand Military Ball. These music CDs are on exhibit at the Smithsonian Institute as classic examples of Early American Music. The Voices of Shiloh album also won a Grammy for ‘Best Early American Music.’”\n\nThere will be a special school presentation of the A House Divided program at 10:00 am on October 22nd. The school program will include scenes from the play\, a presentation by Dr. Lee\, and a story about the Hunley submarine with storyteller Cackalacky Jack. If you are interested in booking seats for the school performance\, contact the Jackson Theatre directly.\n\nCelebrate America’s 250th birthday with the McKinney Center and StoryTown at the Jackson Theatre. The event will start at 7:00 pm\, and the house opens at 6:00 pm. This series is Pay What You Can but go ahead and reserve your seats at thejacksontheatre.com. You can also reserve tickets by calling the Jackson Theatre’s box office at 423-788-4909 or the Visitor’s Center at 423-753-1010.\n\nThis programming is supported in part by the Tennessee Commission for the United States Semiquincentennial and the Historic Jonesborough Arts Foundation.\n#####\n\nAbout The Jackson Theatre: The Jackson Theatre is a fully restored theatre in the heart of historic downtown Jonesborough. Serving as a vibrant hub for the arts\, it now operates as a music venue\, theatre\, and film house\, bringing entertainment and culture to the community again.
