DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Mother Earth with the Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion’s Green Team plogging event!\n\nDate: Saturday\, April 25\, 2026 \nTime: 9 a.m. EST \nLocation: Axe and Ale House\, 155 Moore Street\, Bristol\, VA 24201  \nCost: Free to participate (beverages and food not included) \nREGISTER HERE \nPlogging is a community and environmentally focused way to exercise where you pick up trash as you walk/run. This event gives us the opportunity to call attention to the importance of recycling\, disposing of trash responsibly\, and keeping our Historic Downtown clean. \nPlogging volunteers pose with the trash pick-up results from a past event (left); winners of the BRRR wristband grand prize for the most trash gathered (right). Our first event in 2022 resulted in almost 150 pounds of trash picked up over one hour; our second event 2024 brought in 283 pounds!\nWhat to expect:\nMeet us at Axe and Ale House at 9 a.m. on Saturday\, April 25. Participants will have two walk/run routes to choose from\, each starting in Historic Downtown Bristol\, and then branching out to nearby neighborhoods in Tennessee and Virginia. \nThe Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion Green Team will be there to talk about volunteer opportunities at Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion music festival coming up September 11-13 in Historic Downtown Bristol. \nAxe and Ale House will have food and drinks to purchase so you can hang out while enjoying some time with old and new friends after helping make Bristol a greener place to live! \nAfter the plogging session\, we will hold a raffle with several cool prizes to be won\, and the person who brings back the most trash (by weight) will win a trophy and a 3-Day GA pass to Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion! \nItinerary: \n9-9:30 a.m.\nArrive at Axe and Ale House to get your route maps for plogging\, pick up trash bags\, and get a trash picker (first-come\, first-served). \n9:30-10:30 a.m.\n5K plog\, walk or run. This program delivers both. We’re gonna do something old and archaic\, which will probably be something new and different. We’re gonna record our very own Kris Truelsen from Radio Bristol onto a “wax” cylinder with 100+ year old equipment\, and we’re gonna do it WITHOUT electricity and wires! This is a great opportunity to learn more about how early recordings were made and see the work in action. \n\nREGISTER TO ATTEND IN PERSON HERE \n\nDate: Tuesday\, April 14\, 2026 \n\n\nTime: 7 p.m. ET \n\n\nLocation: In-person at the Birthplace of Country Music\, Performance Theater and streamed on Radio Bristol’s YouTube Channel \n\n\nCost: Free and open to the public \n  \n\n\nMartin Fisher joined the Center for Popular Music staff at MTSU in September of 2005 having accumulated and maintained a private collection of sound recordings for over 30 years and having 18 years experience in the field of television production with NewsChannel 5\, WTVF in Nashville\, Tennessee. Fisher also plays the trombone and is a self-taught fiddler who performs regularly with the Nashville Old Time String Band Association. His responsibilities include preserving\, maintaining and augmenting the Center’s sound recordings collection\, assisting researchers in locating and obtaining copies of recordings\, and conducting acoustical “wax” cylinder recording demonstrations as part of the Center’s outreach program. Martin is also a member of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections and Tennessee Folklore Society.

The Songwriters Circle Showcase will be held twice a year in 2026 at 2 p.m. ET\, April 11 and November 14\, in the performance theater at the museum. These two Showcases accompany the monthly Songwriters Circle events on second Saturdays. The event is free and open to the public; donations are appreciated. \n\nThe quarterly Songwriters Circle Showcase is an extension of the monthly Songwriters Circle program\, organized by Songwriters of Highlands Appalachia\, and will consist of artists who participate in the monthly Circle. The Showcase event is structured similarly to “in the round” events\, with each songwriter introducing themselves and their song\, which will be performed with or without accompaniment. The songwriter will then hold a discussion about the piece–the origins of the song\, its structure\, and inspiration–and take questions. \nAbout the featured Songwriters on April 11\nJulia Maggard is an Appalachian songwriter from the mountains of southwest Virginia.  Her story started in a Pentecostal mountaintop church when she was only three years old and improvised “Away in a Manger” after a Christmas service.  She has been singing ever since.  When she was only twenty\, she signed with an independent record label that produced her debut album “Hard to Believe.”  One of its songs\, “Ain’t Made Weak” made to number 77 on the Music Row Breakout charts.  Today\, she’s fully independent and has a 2026 single called “Forever Won’t Be Long Enough”.   Her love of language\, storytelling\, and people has curated a catalogue of music that truly connects. \n  \nJonathan Short has called the APP-UH-LATCH-UN Mountains home his whole life\, and like most mountain folk\, he has been deeply impacted by mountain music culture. His parents were his first musical influence as part of a southern gospel trio when he was a little boy. Because of the strong religious influence\, Jonathan cut his musical teeth by singing in churches in different bands. While still a worship leader in his church\, his musical tree sprouted a new branch as his songwriting began taking him on a whole new musical journey. \nIn 2015\, Jonathan began gigging around with his rock and roll band\, Hello October\, playing lots of local music festivals and venues. Now Jonathan is standing out on his own with a new batch of songs and a new emphasis on his songwriting\, hoping to pave a new way for himself as a singer/songwriter. He is a member of SOHA (Songwriters of Highlands Appalachia) and the 2025 winner of the Gathering in the Gap Songwriting Contest with his original song\, “Hometown.” \n  \nHannah Rae Adams is an independent singer-songwriter whose music blends elements of funk\, folk\, rock and baroque pop. Originally from Michigan\, she has called Bristol\, Tennessee\, home since 2017\, immersing herself in the region’s rich musical heritage while staying true to her diverse influences. We don’t discuss politics\, use profanity\, or write antagonistic lyrics. \n \nThe focus is not on the beauty of the voice or skill of the instrumentation\, but the clearness of the pronunciation and the effect of the song. We work on making sure the audience can hear every word. We are not professional musicians but we are creators of musical stories and that is the beauty of it. SUMMARY:Cardboard Dulcimer-Building Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum on Saturday\, March 21 and Sunday\, March 22\, 1-4 p.m. for a cardboard dulcimer-building workshop! Class size is limited to 15 people and recommended for ages 16 and up; registration fee is $37.47 including all taxes\, fees and materials. The class occurs in two sessions to finish the project. \nLed by dulcimer player and instructor Roxanne McDaniel\, participants will have the opportunity to build their own dulcimer from cardboard using simple tools. Introduced in the early 19th century by Scots-Irish immigrants\, the dulcimer has a prominent history in Appalachian music. Participants in the workshop will learn more about that history and the importance of keeping this uniquely Appalachian instrument relevant for younger generations. The dulcimer is also among the most accessible of stringed instruments\, making it especially suitable for beginners. This is the perfect opportunity for anyone who wants to learn an instrument\, from experienced musicians to complete beginners. The workshop will also introduce participants to a number of simple playing techniques and beginner-friendly dulcimer tunes. \nRoxanne is based in Johnson City and is a graduate of East Tennessee State University’s Bluegrass\, Old-Time\, and Roots Music Studies program. She has a passion for the dulcimer and for teaching others about its importance in Appalachian culture. McDaniel leads classes\, hosts dulcimer workshops\, and incorporates the instrument heavily in her own music. She is also a Radio Bristol DJ\, hosting her show Outside the Box on Thursdays at 2 p.m. \nSpecial thanks to Berea Appalachian Fund’s Folk Arts & Cultures Initiative for support of this project.
