SUMMARY:Hoot and Holler Live: Soundtrack of My Life
DESCRIPTION:Hoot and Holler Live: Soundtrack of My Life\n\nNovember 16 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm\n\n\n\n\nRoanoke’s Hoot and Holler live storytelling event at the museum! \nDate: Thursday\, November 16\, 2023 \nTime: 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. EDT \nLocation: Performance Theater\, Birthplace of Country Music Museum \nTickets: $15+ tax/fee \nBUY TICKETS \nDo you have a theme song? A concert story that shook your very soul? A make out or break up ballad that seems to play at just the right time? The record you played until you wore the grooves out? A band that changed your life? A tale about that time at that music festival? Maybe it was the slow dance with your prom date? Your church hymns? That punk band you started in your parent’s basement? A story about the way music maybe\, just maybe\, saved your life? \nOn Nov. 16\, Hoot and Holler will gather to honor those stories in a lively\, rollicking\, poignant\, and life affirming way at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. \nHoot and Holler is a live storytelling event series based out of Roanoke\, Va. If you are a fan of NPR’s The Moth\, This American Life\, Mortified\, and other storytelling events and podcasts\, then you will love being a part of Hoot and Holler. We build up our community by encouraging all people to step up and share their stories in a supportive\, diverse\, and empowering format. We believe that all stories matter and that all people have thousands of stories within them to tell. \nA little Vaudeville\, a smidge of irreverent rock ‘n’ roll\, a dash of freakshow\, a heap of hilarity\, and a massive infusion of soul\, Hoot and Holler will restore faith in the way we\, as humans\, share and listen to stories. \n***Interested in submitting a story pitch to be considered as a storyteller? We ask for a detailed outline to be submitted in a private message through the Hoot and Holler Facebook Messenger. Deadline for submissions is Oct. 10. \nWe look for a beginning\, middle\, and end\, lots of juicy details\, humor and truth\, conviction and confidence\, and the willingness to step up in all of your brave glory to share your story. \nWhat compels you to want to tell it? Dazzle us!

This heartwarming musical comedy takes us through Marcy Marxer’s many stages of discovery and diagnosis of breast cancer and neuropathy tempered by her wacky sense of humor and ability to make the personal universal. Grammy-winning singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Marcy\, along with her musical and life partner Cathy Fink\, have shared All Wigged Out with audiences nationwide\, helping us to navigate the cancer maze while showcasing the power of hope\, love\, and advocacy. \nThe screening of the stage show of All Wigged Out will be followed by a Q&A with Marcy and Cathy\, along with a representative from one of Ballad Health’s cancer centers. \nThe film is 58 minutes long. \n“ALL WIGGED OUT is heartwarming\, touching\, hilarious and SO relatable! A true ‘must see’ for us all.“ ~ Doreen Bickel\, American Nurses Association \nThis program is complementary programming to go along with the museum’s current special exhibit\, I’ve Endured: Women in Old-Time Music\, on display through December 31\, 2023. Special thanks are due to the East Tennessee Foundation Art Fund for programming support\, along with sponsors Robert and Rene Rodgers in memory of Joyce Rodgers. \nAbout Marcy Marxer and Cathy Fink \nTwo-time Grammy Award winners\, Cathy Fink & Marcy Marxer are master musicians with a career spanning over 35 years. Their superb harmonies are backed by instrumental virtuosity on the guitar\, five-string banjo\, ukulele\, mandolin\, cello-banjo\, and many other instruments. An eclectic folk festival on their own terms\, their repertoire ranges from classic country to western swing\, gypsy jazz to bluegrass\, and old-time string band to contemporary folk including some original gems. Their versatility defies a brief description\, perhaps “well rounded Americana” does it best. \nCathy & Marcy have performed at hundreds of bluegrass and folk festivals and taught at close to 100 music camps. The Washington Area Music Association has recognized the duo with over 60 WAMMIE Awards for folk\, bluegrass and children’s music. They have performed with Pete Seeger\, Theodore Bikel\, Tom Paxton\, Patsy Montana\, Riders in the Sky and a wide range of musical luminaries. \nThey are happily known as “social music conductors” ready to start a jam session\, a community sing or to cre-
ate a music camp helping others learn to play and sing. Past students include Kaki King and Rhiannon Giddens. Through their long relationship with the Music Center at Strathmore they collaborated with positive hip-hop artist Christylez Bacon. They continue to mentor up-and-coming artists on navigating the professional music world. \nThey have entertained the Queen of Thailand\, been keynote singers for the AFL-CIO\, performed at hundreds of folk festivals\, and appeared on the “Today Show” and National Public Radio. They have advocated in Washington for unions\, health care for children\, and the rights and livelihoods of artists. \nAs curators\, performers and hosts\, Cathy & Marcy produce A Tribute To Hank Williams at The Birchmere Music Hall\, 2019 was their 23rd annual concert. Their annual weeklong Ukulele & Guitar Summit at The Music Center at Strathmore went into its 11th year in 2019. \nCathy & Marcy have earned two GRAMMY® Awards for their recordings “cELLAbration: a Tribute to Ella Jenkins” and for “Bon Appétit!”. Their CDs “Postcards” and “Banjo Talkin’” were both GRAMMY® nominated in the Best Traditional Folk Album category. \nCathy & Marcy have toured worldwide from Japan to New Zealand\, Vancouver to New York and everywhere in between. Shows include The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum (OH)\, Smithsonian Institution and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. American Voices Abroad chose Cathy & Marcy with fiddler Barbara Lamb to perform in China\, Malaysia\, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu for the U.S. Department of State.

We provide communities with the tools and support they need to teach children to play and dance to traditional old time and bluegrass music. JAM introduces music through small group instruction on instruments common to the Appalachian region\, such as fiddle\, banjo and guitar. Each JAM program is individually operated and funded. By affiliating with the JAM organization\, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free\, and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program. \nBe sure to check out JAM Kids on Facebook and Instagram! \n \n \nThe JAM Program Model \nJAM is an after-school program for children in grades 4 – 8 and beyond that introduces music through small group instruction on instruments common to the Appalachian region\, such as fiddle\, banjo and guitar. Each JAM program is individually operated and funded. By affiliating with the JAM organization\, each program is eligible to receive support and resources for free\, and is licensed to use “Junior Appalachian Musicians (JAM)” to identify their traditional music education program. \nJunior Appalachian Musicians ® is a registered trademark of Junior Appalachian Musicians\, Inc. \nIn JAM\, instrument instruction is often augmented by dance and vocal instruction as well as string band classes and group enrichment lessons\, which introduce children to additional Appalachian culture and history. The JAM program model provides children with opportunities to not only learn traditional music\, but to also perform in small and large groups. Field trips\, visiting artists and an introduction to the rich history of music unique to each local community further supplement program offerings. Each JAM program is encouraged to foster musical traditions by teaching local styles of traditional mountain music and dance to children. Instructors are also encouraged to teach students to learn music by ear\, as to preserve oral traditions as much as possible. Other teaching methodologies and instructional skills are covered in regional professional development and training sessions held multiple times per year and hosted by JAM. JAM also encourages student engagement across programs with regional performance and learning activities throughout the year. For a full list of benefits to affiliates\, click here. \nJAM believes that all children should have access to traditional old time and bluegrass music. It is recommended that each program provide financial assistance through scholarships to children in need. The program model bases tuition fees on student lunch status: $10/week for full pay children\, and $5/week for reduced pay children. \nClass sizes typically have a student teacher ratio of 8:1 or less. JAM mandates that each affiliated program conduct criminal background checks on their instructors\, directors\, and other staff members and volunteers. Programs must be held in public facilities accessible to the community. Junior Appalachian Musicians\, Inc prohibits discrimination against any persons on the bases of race\, color\, national origin\, disability\, sex\, gender identity\, religion\, reprisal\, political beliefs\, familial or parental status\, and sexual orientation. \nFor a full listing of affiliation requirements\, click here. \nHistory of JAM \nRealizing the need to preserve a vital aspect of mountain culture as well as the need for positive activities to underserved youth\, Helen White\, then a guidance counselor at Sparta Elementary School\, founded the first JAM program in Alleghany County\, NC in the spring of 2000 with help from other local musicians and educators. Interest in the program spread rapidly with assistance from the National Endowment for the Arts\, NC State Arts Council\, Blue Ridge National Heritage Area and “The Crooked Road – Virginia’s Heritage Music Trail.” \nIn 2007\, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation provided funding to allow the development of a regional infrastructure. The Dana Foundation\, Virginia Commission for Arts\, the Virginia Foundation for Humanities\, the Blue Ridge National Heritage Area\, the National Endowment for the Arts\, the Harris and Frances Block Foundation and the Tides Foundation have provided funding for materials development. \n“Junior Appalachian Musicians” was incorporated in 2008 as a non-profit 501(c)3 tax exempt corporation to promote a shared vision of JAM and to provide an umbrella through which to offer resources\, training materials and activities to benefit programs individually and collectively. Currently in nearly 30 locations in North Carolina\, South Carolina\, Tennessee and Virginia\, JAM affiliates are providing access to the joy of music to thousands of youth while instilling renewed interest and pride in their heritage. \nInterested in learning more about JAM? Click here.

SUMMARY:Museum Story Time: Piggies in a Polka by Kathi Appelt
DESCRIPTION:Museum Story Time: Piggies in a Polka by Kathi Appelt\n\nOctober 6 @ 10:30 am – 11:30 am\n\n\n\n\nDate: Friday\, October 6\, 2023 \nTime: 10:30 a.m. EST \nLocation: The Learning Center\, Birthplace of Country Music Museum \nCost: Free and open to the public \nJoin us in the museum’s Learning Center for our monthly Museum Story Time program. Aimed at toddler-age children and their grown-ups\, we will gather on the first Friday of each month for a music- or Appalachia-related storybook\, a tune or two by WBCM Radio Bristol show host Ella Patrick\, and a related activity or coloring sheet. \nThis month we will be reading Hello Crow written by Jeff Daniel Marion and illustrated by Leslie Bowman. \nAbout Piggies in a Polka \nIt’s time for the annual holler hootenanny\, and these little piggies know how to party! “The drummer piggy hits a groove\,/ he keeps the polka beat./ It’s a hoopy-shoopy rhythm/ and the pigs all stomp their feet\,” writes Appelt (Oh My Baby\, Little One). The star of the barn dance is Porcina\, a Rubenesque chanteuse whose high notes make “all the bachelor piggies sigh.” But the real show is in Pham’s (Before I Was Your Mother) suedelike\, digital illustrations. She crowds the barn floor with ecstatic couples—and an occasional singleton—carried away by the music and merrymaking (in one scene\, a pig can be spotted floating in the punch bowl; throughout\, a duck quacks with abandon). Hues of rose and gold emanate from the footlights and lanterns\, bouncing off the walls and illuminating the angular planes of the pigs’ plump bodies. Investing her porcine participants with an individual personality\, Pham makes the pages pulsate with the heady crush and buzz of a joint that’s jumpin’. Ages 3-7. \nAbout the Author \nKathi Appelt is the author of the Newbery Honoree\, National Book Award finalist\, and bestselling The Underneath as well as the National Book Award finalist The True Blue Scouts of Sugar Man Swamp\, Maybe a Fox (with Alison McGhee)\, Keeper\, and many picture books including Counting Crows and Max Attacks. She has two grown children and lives in College Station\, Texas\, with her husband.

This talk will go along with The Way We Worked\, our current special exhibit on display at the museum through January 23. René Rodgers\, Erika Barker\, and Scotty Almany will discuss how music is interwoven throughout the history of America’s workforce culture. \nWorkers’ anthems\, union movement songs\, stories of hard labor and tragedy\, and how music influences workflow and productivity will be thoughtfully examined and presented by our staff. We look forward to sharing this exploration of music and work with our virtual audience! \nThe Way We Worked explores how work became such a central element in American culture by tracing the many changes that affected the workforce and work environments over the past 150 years. The diversity of the American workforce is one of its strengths\, providing an opportunity to explore how people of all races and ethnicities identified commonalities and worked to knock down barriers in the professional world. The exhibition shows how we identify with work – as individuals and as communities. The Way We Worked\, an exhibition created by the National Archives\, is adapted for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service and made possible with the generous support of the United States Congress. \nThe Birthplace of Country Music Museum (an Affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution) has created a supplementary display related to work in Bristol and the surrounding region from major manufacturing and resource extraction to retail\, food services\, farming\, local industry\, and the local newspaper. \nScotty Almany is the Digital Media\, Programming & Exhibit Logistics Manager at the Birthplace of Country Music Museum. He received his Master’s in Museum Studies from John Hopkins University\, and he has worked at the museum since it opened in 2014. He is a musician\, a Radio Bristol DJ\, and a hockey fanatic. Erika Barker is the Curatorial Manager at the museum. She did a Master’s in Historical Administration from Eastern Illinois University\, and she has been at the museum since 2017. Erika is learning Korean\, loves to read\, and plays Dungeons & Dragons. Dr. René Rodgers is the Head Curator at the museum. She did her Master’s and Ph.D. work at Durham University in the UK\, and she joined the museum team before it opened as a member of the exhibit content development team. She loves to read\, hike with her dog Pippa\, and get creative with her bullet journal.\nThe event is free\, but pre-registration is required.

Scottish settlers established themselves in the Appalachian region of several states\, including North Carolina\, Virginia\, Tennessee\, Kentucky and West Virginia. In these isolated areas\, the old songs of love\, loss\, murder\, ghosts\, and earlier times were passed down by oral tradition\, expressing timeless themes and ties to the past. Over time the melodies and words changed creating variations that are still sung today. Licko\, a North Carolina native\, will be sharing her observations on variants and versions of Scottish folk songs that exist in Appalachia.Awarded “Celtic Album of the Year” by Celtic Music Radio and nomination for “Trad Album of the Year” by TradConnect\, Jennifer Licko has a strong relationship with the music that traveled over with the Scottish settlers. \nSpending her youth as a competitive Scottish Highland Dancer encouraged her interest and love for the Scottish traditions. Jennifer is an exceptional vocalist and multi-instrumentalist who plays the piano\, guitar\, and bodhrán (Irish drum). After living almost a decade in Scotland and Ireland\, Jennifer realized the strong similarities between Scotland and North Carolina…and her music began to branch out into a genre that honors those connections. \n“I believe that the music needs to connect with the audience through our shared emotions and experiences for us all to feel that which can only be experienced through music.” \nJennifer works as a performer\, educator\, and advocate for cultural inclusion in education. She founded and operates the non-profit Highland Echoes carrying out three large-scale projects to support the mission of cultivating awareness and preservation of Scottish culture\, she runs The Cultural Classroom providing resources and support for teachers\, and she has her own podcast called Respecting Diversity in the Class. \nJennifer is currently living in Brazil as an ex-pat\, raising two trilingual and extremely energetic boys\, and a very sweet white lab named Bailey. In her free time\, she enjoys running and being by the ocean in any capacity. Probably not important to a professional bio\, but Jennifer’s favorite color is aqua\, her favorite food is mint chocolate chip Ice cream (yep\, that’s real food)\, and her Starbucks choice is a grande Americano. \nFor more information about Jennifer’s music and work\, check out her website.\nThe event is free\, but pre-registration is required.

SUMMARY:Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion celebrates 20 years in Historic Downtown Bristol\, Virginia-Tennessee September 10-12\, 2021. Honoring the legacy of the 1927 Bristol Sessions\, which included the first recordings of The Carter Family and Jimmie Rodgers and ushered country music into the mainstream\, Bristol Rhythm digs deep into the roots of Appalachian music while lifting its branches to new heights. The festival offers more than 100 acts of live music on more than a dozen stages along State Street – from traditional bluegrass and classic country to Americana and indie rock. \nDue to the vast influence of the 1927 Bristol Sessions\, Bristol has been designated by Congress as “the birthplace of country music” and is home to the Birthplace of Country Music Museum\, an affiliate of the Smithsonian Institution. Conveniently located just outside festival gates\, the museum tells the story of the 1927 Bristol Session through beautiful film experiences\, interactive touch screen exhibits\, and much more. We highly recommend visiting the museum while you’re attending the festival! \nFor more information about festival lineup and the museum\, visit our website.

Her blues classroom was on the porch of her uncle’s house where she heard guitar and harmonica playing. Her first professional engagement came in the early 1980s when she was asked to perform at a local club where she was attending college. “I had three days to find three musicians and put together 30 songs\,” she said. “They loved me – the rest is history because I’ve been singing the Blues ever since.” \nFor years\, Pat sang in New Orleans six nights a week\, performing at a wide array of venues including the House of Blues\, until Katrina destroyed her home. She relocated to North Carolina and has recently started touring with the Music Maker Blues Revue. During her performances\, “Mother Blues” unfurls the tapestry of her life experiences to her audience in soulful words and music.  She shares the mettle\, pathos and ocean-deep compassion of the famous female blues singers she idolizes – women like Billie Holiday\, Koko Taylor and Etta James. \nPat “Mother Blues” Cohen is a dramatic and exotic performer whose talent should not be overlooked.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
