SUMMARY:Memories of the 13th Regiment Tennessee Voluntary Cavalry
DESCRIPTION:Book Signing with Jan LaBonne:\nMemories of the 13th Regiment Tennessee Voluntary Cavalry\nFri Apr 19th 3:00pm – 5:00pm\nJan LaBonne\, artist\, volunteer and author\, will be with us Friday to sign copies of her new book: Memories of the 13th Regiment Tennessee Voluntary Cavalry. \nIn this book\, her main character tells the story of the regiment as well as what happened in East Tennessee when our country became engulfed in the Civil War. Men from Johnson and Carter Counties who wanted to fight for the Union joined this regiment led by Col. Roderick Butler of Mountain City. \nAfter reading The History of the 13th Regiment Tennessee Voluntary Cavalry published in 1903\, Jan was so intrigued by this amazing story that she decided to write a shorter\, more condensed\, and newer version that our present-day generation could easily read and learn from.

SUMMARY:Sharyn McCrumb Book Release Party
DESCRIPTION:Sharyn McCrumb’s Book Release Party is October 8! \nThe current controversy revolves around whether the raccoons should be invited. Still\, no one has stepped up to chaperone\, and they may or may not be well suited for a party\, so we will leave that decision to Sharyn. Certainly\, we will send them a collection of treats if they aren’t able to make it in person. \nRaccoons or not\, join us at Johnson County Public Library to meet New York Times Best-Selling Author Sharyn McCrumb and celebrate her new book The Marvin Chronicles II with cover art by local artist\, Cristy Dunn.

SUMMARY:Virtual Long Journey Home Festival
DESCRIPTION:Long Journey Home is moving to a Virtual Format again in 2021\nPlans were in place for a bigger than ever Long Journey Home festival this Labor Day weekend\, but after consulting with public health experts\, we have made the difficult decision to move to a virtual format. Given the numbers of people currently infected with the highly contagious delta variant in our region\, our healthcare system at full capacity\, and low vaccination rates\, an in-person festival would put our musicians\, volunteers and patrons at an unacceptable level of risk. This is simply not consistent with the values of Long Journey Home. \nWe deeply wish the circumstances were different\, but we know what to do when life gives you lemons… you make some good old fashioned lemonade\, of course\, and you share it with your friends. And that is just what we plan to do. \nSimilar to last year\, we will bring the festival to you in the safety and comfort of your home. You will find links to all the virtual events at www.longjourneyhome.net. as well as the Long Journey Home Facebook page. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor a preview of the kind of content you can expect from our virtual Long Journey Home\, here’s a segment from 2020.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSpecial thanks to Johnson County Community Foundation and other donors for your support of the 2021 Long Journey Home events.

SUMMARY:Long Journey Home
DESCRIPTION:Just about as far northeast in Tennessee as you can get\, you’ll find a place where folks still get together and play Old Time music on their front porches. Every year a celebration takes place honoring the iconic Old Time mountain music style that shaped country music as we know it. \nThis year’s Long Journey Home festival on September 4th and 5th might look a little different\, but even a global pandemic can’t stop the celebration. The anticipated events will be enjoyed virtually: \n· An exclusive one-time community preview of the new film Short Life of Trouble: The Legend of G.B. Grayson\, will be shown Friday\, September 4th at 8pm \n· The largest mural yet A Day in the Life of a Song will be unveiled in Downtown Mountain City- Saturday\, September 5th \n· Authentic Old Time music from heritage music sites throughout Johnson County- September 5th \n· An exclusive guided virtual tour of the Musical Heritage Mural Mile in Downtown Mountain City- September 5th \n· An online visit with best-selling Appalachian author\, Sharyn McCrumb-September 5th \nAll events will be presented online at www.longjourneyhome.net and on the Long Journey Home Facebook page. \nThe excitement begins on Friday\, September 4th with an exclusive one time online community preview of Short Life of Trouble: The Legend of G.B. Grayson. This film tells the long overdue story of the blind mountain fiddler G.B. Grayson\, whose short career produced The Ballad of Tom Dooley\, Train 45\, Handsome Molly\, and about 40 other songs that became the standards of Bluegrass and early country music. The film was created by Appalachian Memory Keepers in partnership with Johnson County Center for the Arts and funded by Tennessee Arts Commission. \nOn Saturday\, September 5th\, the Musical Heritage Homecoming Tour goes live at 11:30. First\, you can watch the unveiling of A Day in the Life of a Song\, the newest addition to downtown Mountain City’s Musical Heritage Mural Mile. Artists Cristy Dunn\, Temple Reece\, and Lewis Chapman created scenes that celebrate music as a part of everyday life\, from singing while making biscuits to ‘Lassy Making and Sawmillin’ and ending with a family gathered around an old fashioned radio listening to The Grand Ole Opry. \nThe Kody Norris Show will entertain with the songs of G.B. Grayson at noon\, and then two more virtual sites will celebrate the music of Clarence “Tom” Ashley\, Clint Howard and Fred Price with video segments ‘Sawmillin and ‘Lassy Makin’ and My Home in the Mountains. \nAfterwards\, viewers are invited to go for a guided tour of the Musical Heritage Mural Mile. This virtual tour through beautiful downtown Mountain City will give you an in-depth look into the inspiration behind the musical heritage murals. \nFinally\, acclaimed Appalachian author\, Sharyn McCrumb will join us for an online talk and share her insight into ballads and murders in Johnson County. Wherever you are this year\, you can tune in and share in the sites and sounds that make Johnson County such a special place at www.longjourneyhome.net. \n  \n“It’s about as real as it gets. If you were wondering whether authentic Appalachia still exists\, look no further.” -Evelyn Cook \nFor more information\, please contact Cristy Dunn at 423-957-6346 or Evelyn Cook at 423-727-8700 \ncdunnoriginals@hotmail.com \nor go to www.longjourneyhome.net
