SUMMARY:Heritage Alliance to Premiere Original Play “Nancy” on June 19 at Embree House Historic Farm
DESCRIPTION:The Heritage Alliance will host an original play\, “Nancy\,” in honor of Juneteenth on Saturday\, June 19 at 1 p.m.\, 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the historic Embree House in Telford. The show will last an hour\, and there will be a Q&A session and a chance to tour parts of the Embree House after each performance. \n  \nJune 19 is recognized as Juneteenth\, or Emancipation Day\, a celebration of the day that word of emancipation finally reached a group of enslaved people in Galveston\, Texas in June of 1865. The Heritage Alliance invites you to join them as they celebrate Nancy and tell her story.    \n  \nIn 1820\, Elihu Embree published his newspaper The Emancipator on Main Street\, Jonesborough. The seven edition paper is the first publication dedicated solely to the cause of abolitionism. Embree passed away in December of 1820\, and the paper died with him. Even though it was short-lived\, The Emancipator had over 2\,000 subscribers and its reach went all the way to Boston and Philadelphia. In spite of his abolitionist beliefs\, Embree himself was an enslaver. Nancy was an enslaved woman owned by Elihu Embree\, and her story will be told in this original play “Nancy.” \n  \nWritten by Anne G’Fellers-Mason\, Executive Director of the Heritage Alliance\, “Nancy” will follow a year in the woman’s life\, from January 1820 when Elihu Embree wrote his will to January 1821 when his will was read before the Washington County court. The play is based on primary research relying heavily on documents from the Washington County Archives. The role of Nancy will be performed by local actress Ubunibi-Afia Short. \n  \n“I’ve wanted to tell Nancy’s story for a long time\,” says Mason. “It’s an honor to have such an amazing actress to help tell it. I believe Nancy’s story shows just how complicated the system of enslavement was in the United States and how unjust it was. We know Embree’s story so well. It’s past time we know Nancy’s.” \n  \nTickets are $12 and proceeds from ticket sales will help fund the educational programs of the Heritage Alliance. You can purchase tickets through Jonesborough’s online system at jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Visitor’s Center at 423.753.1010. Seating is limited\, so purchase tickets in advance.

DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nThe Chuckey Depot Museum in Jonesborough will debut its newest exhibit\, As Fast as Birds Can Fly: The ET & WNC (Tweetsie) Railroad\, on Thursday\, March 4. The East Tennessee & Western North Carolina railroad (ET & WNC) was one of the main lines that ran through Johnson City and Elizabethton. This narrow gauge railroad only lasted from the 1880s through 1950\, but it made a lasting impact on the region.  \n  \nThe exhibit will include several artifacts from the ET & WNC’s storied history\, as well as photographs taken by people who worked on and for the railroad line. Tune into the Chuckey Depot Museum’s Facebook page at 7 p.m. on March 4 for a special virtual tour of the exhibit.  \n  \nYou can visit the museum in person on Thursday through Sunday from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Additional events to celebrate the exhibit will follow at a later date. The ET & WNC exhibit will be on display at the museum through Aug. 2021.  \n  \nChuckey Depot Museum is located at 110 S 2nd Ave. This project is brought to you by the Town of Jonesborough\, Heritage Alliance of Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia\, and Watauga Valley Railroad Historical Society. For more information visit the Chuckey Depot on Facebook or call the Visitors Center at 423.753.1010. \n  \n### \n  \nThe Chuckey Depot’s original home was just down the road in Chuckey\, TN\, and now sits within WC Rowe Park in Jonesborough. To preserve the building\, it was dismantled and re-erected in Jonesborough\, where it opened as a museum in October 2017.

There will be chocolate stops dotted throughout downtown provided by Jonesborough small businesses\, each serving something unique and special but of course\, chocolate-themed. You’ll discover endless options— everything from barks\, fudges\, chocolate-covered strawberries and so much more. One ticket equals one chocolate treat. At check-in\, you will receive a bag to carry your chocolates in\, your pack of 10 tickets\, and a mask if needed. \n\nThe event has been adapted in a variety of ways to ensure our small businesses\, the community\, and visitors all remain healthy and safe. The days and times are as follows; Friday\, February 12 from 5-8 p.m.\, Saturday\, February 13 from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-5 p.m.\, and Sunday\, February 14 from 1-4 p.m. All chocolates are packaged for pick up to be enjoyed at home. Social distancing guidelines will be in place and masks are required\, due to the Washington County mask mandate. \n\nIn addition to Chocolate Fest\, attendees can take part in The Spread the Love Project organized by Main Street Jonesborough. This is a fundraiser for area non-profits\, as well community projects\, to share your words of love and kindness to be displayed throughout Downtown Jonesborough in celebration of Valentine’s Day. Select downtown businesses will offer paper hearts to purchase for a suggested donation that will go to a non-profit of their choosing. Participants will write a message of love or kindness on the heart and the business will display it in their store window through the holiday. You’ll also be able to purchase a paper heart online and include a personalized note by visiting Jonesborough.com. \n\nJonesborough’s Area Merchants and Service Association (JAMSA) is operated by volunteers\, consisting of local business owners and community members. As an organization\, they focus on promoting and serving local merchants as well as the growth of Jonesborough as a whole. Chocolate Fest is just one of the ways JAMSA works to support locally owned businesses. The funds raised from Chocolate Fest go to support Jonesborough’s small businesses and the community. \n\nThe sixth annual Chocolate Fest will be held on Friday\, February 12 through Sunday\, February 14. Tickets will be sold in packs of 10 for $15 and need to be purchased in advance. Early ticket pick-up will be held Monday\, February 8th through Thursday\, February 11th. SUMMARY:StoryTown Radio Show
DESCRIPTION:StoryTown Radio Show Honors First Responders \nThe StoryTown Radio Show will honor first responders from many fields with a live stream production on Monday\, September 28 at 7 p.m. The performance includes stories of local firefighters\, police officers\, Emergency Room nurses\, EMTs\, Red Cross workers\, civil defense volunteers from the cold war\, and volunteer community responders during World War II. \n\nThe stories from this program come from oral histories collected from community members from the region. As Jonesborough has a population consisting of families who have been here several generations as well as many transplants\, the scenes in this show go beyond the boundaries of Washington County\, Tennessee\, and reach as far as England in the 1940’s. Each story represents the important contributions of those brave individuals who show up first\, often placing their own lives at risk\, in order to keep their communities safe. This show explores the many different kinds of “first responders” and include some unexpected heroes. \n\nThe production can be found on the StoryTown Radio Show  Facebook page as a Facebook Live stream at 7 p.m.\, and will be saved on that page for future viewing. \n\nFor safety concerns\, The StoryTown Radio Show has continued to tell the stories of the community during the pandemic as radio and live-stream performances\, without their usual live studio audiences. However\, audiences during the live stream will have a chance to “chat” online with the cast and crew during the show\, as the live-stream page will be moderated during the performance.https:///drive.google.com/drive/folders/1RyV-ev10omUsZGYDH-AyqU1Bx2-7XEMN?usp=sharing

SUMMARY:Storytown Radio Show
DESCRIPTION:StoryTown Radio Show to Stream Live \nThe Storytown Radio Show has continued bringing the stories of Jonesborough and Northeast Tennessee to the radio and podcast\, even while their live production has been suspended. But this month\, the cast will perform a live-stream for audiences\, with an episode all about travel and adventures. Audiences will have an opportunity to travel-at least virtually- through the stories of local community members who have gone on great adventures. This virtual production will take place Monday\, July 27 at 7 p.m. \n\n“We’ve heard from so many of our usual audience members\, and we want to take a first step toward ‘normal’ during this pandemic\, and that would be to have the cast perform live for an audience- but the audience will watch from their own homes\,” explains Jules Corriere\, writer and director of the long-running StoryTown Radio Show (formerly the Yarn Exchange Radio Show.) \n\nAudiences may purchase tickets for the live stream for $5\, which will help support the production costs associated with the production. Audience will receive a Zoom invitation the day before the live-stream\, and will be able to see the show\, as well as have interactions with each other and the cast during the production\, through the chatroom\, which will be moderated by StoryTown intern Lilli Erbach. \n\nThe cast has continued to present the monthly radio show throughout the pandemic this year\, pausing only in March to reassess options and plan an alternate way to record the stories. During April and May\, the cast used phone-in and Skype methods\, and recorded individually from their own homes. \n\nBeginning in June\, the cast successfully performed a live-stream episode for season pass holders via Zoom from the McKinney Center\, practicing social distancing\, disinfecting the microphones\, and wearing masks when not performing. \n\nOn July 27\, the performance will open to general audience members for the livestream. Joining the cast will be musician Aaron Jackson from Johnson City\, who will perform his upcoming new single\, as well as other songs. \n\nTo attend the live-stream and support the work of the StoryTown Radio Show and podcast\, reserve a place by calling the Historic Visitors Center at 423.753.1010 or purchase online at Jonesborough.com/tickets. \n\nThis program out of the McKinney Center is supported by The Tennessee Arts Commission\, the Wild Women of Jonesborough\, Main Street Café and Catering\, and Nancy Hope and Odie Major.

SUMMARY:Storytown Radio: Not All That I Carry
DESCRIPTION:StoryTown Radio Show to Broadcast Production Honoring Veterans \nThis month\, the StoryTown Radio Show honors Memorial Day with a special broadcast as the cast performs a radio-play version of Jules Corriere’s one-act play “Not All That I Carry”. First performed as a stage show at the Jonesborough Senior Center. The play is based on stories from members of the Jonesborough Senior Center\, especially centering around the subject of World War I\, World War II\, and the Great Depression. \nSenior Center members who contributed stories for this production include World War II Medic Vern Dauerty; Veterans Bob Powers\, John White and Joe Allison\, Larry and Irene Richmond; Pam and Doc Johnson; Owen Colvin; Maggie Polden; Kathleen Dunworth; Shirley Rowan Meade\, and Harvey and Madge Crain. \nTheir time of sacrifice will feel familiar right now. During this time\, when homes are turned into offices\, schools\, and gyms\, we are facing a world much different than just a few months ago\, and the change was sudden. Just like the stories in this play\, each of us is\, in our own ways\, in the midst of making sacrifices. \n“That’s why I think this play will touch audiences today\,” Corriere explains\, “In my years of collecting stories\, I’ve heard tales of sacrifice\, in which people literally lived in a different world- across an ocean\, in a country with a different language\, and different environments. They are so inspiring. We can draw strength from these stories\, because they do offer hope. They made it through difficult times- and that lets me know I’ll make it through\, too. Because I come from them.” \nThe people in “Not All That I Carry” were called the Greatest Generation. They did what was asked of them\, and lived through very difficult times. We are all now living in historic and difficult times\, too. How we are dealing with these times here in Jonesborough has been heartening. \n“We’re reaching out to each other\, not physically\, but virtually. We’re supporting our local businesses at curbside pick-ups. Our educators have\, in a moment’s notice\, created engaging online learning opportunities for our children. We’re providing food to those in need through school lunch pick-up and at the food pantry. We’re doing great things\, even if in small ways. But each of our small sacrifices help to uplift us all.” Corriere says\, and finishes with a thoughtful question: \n“What will our generation be called\, after this global pandemic is over? Our actions will define that. In Jonesborough and Washington County\, I’d like to think we’ll be known as the Caring Generation.” \nThe program will air on WETS 89.5 FM and stream online on wets.org on their HD Channel One at 8 p.m. on Wednesday\, May 27. The cast has not yet resumed their usual live audience performances. The program will also become available on the StoryTown Podcast channel beginning Friday\, May 29. StoryTown is available on all major podcast platforms\, including Apple\, Spotify\, and iHeart\, as well as online at storytown.simplcast.com \nThis will be the eighth episode of the StoryTown Podcast Series. StoryTown is sponsored in part by the Tennessee Arts Commission\, The Wild Women of Jonesborough\, Main Street Café and Catering\, and Nancy Hope and Odie Major.

SUMMARY:StoryTown Radio Show
DESCRIPTION:StoryTown: The Show Must Go On \nThe cast of the StoryTown Radio Show\, while unable to perform a live show in April\, are still bringing to life the stories of Jonesborough and the region this month in a specially-made production that will be broadcast on April 29 at 8 p.m. this month on WETS 89.5 FM. The episode will also be available on the StoryTown Podcast beginning May 1. \n\nThe program’s writer\, Jules Corriere\, points out an eerie yet inspirational fact\, that last year\, the group had decided upon the theme of “Changes” as this month’s topic of stories. “We never imagined the changes our community\, our country\, and the world would be facing. But our stories connect us to this time\, and also reach back to earlier times of change. We made it then\, and we’ll make it now. And I think that’s why we feel it is important to tell these stories this month\, even if we’re presenting them in a different format.” \n\nCorriere\, working with WETS station manager and editor of the program\, Wayne Winkler\, will have the cast record individual stories and monologues\, which will be edited into a full program. Usually performed live in front of an audience\, this month the cast performs from the safety of their own homes. The stories\, however\, are filled with moments of tension\, challenge\, and hope. \n\nProviding an historical context is the Heritage Alliance’s Anne G’Fellers-Mason’s segment\, “Ask the Historian” in which she relates the story of a similar health crisis from 100 years ago. Looking at the strength and wisdom exhibited during those times allows the audience to realize that these moments are cyclical\, and while challenging\, also speak to the indomitable spirit of our people and our region. \n\nThe stories\, past and present\, all have this message: We are in this together\, and together\, we will come through it stronger and more committed to our future. \n\nThe broadcast will take place on April 29 at 8 p.m. To listen to the podcast or the hear past podcasts\, visit https://storytown.simplecast.com. \n\nThe StoryTown Podcast can also be found on Apple Podcasts\, Spotify\, Google Podcasts and most podcast platforms. A different episode is made available every two weeks.
