SUMMARY:The First and Last Town in Tennesse
DESCRIPTION:The McKinney Center will debut a new play in February that is 250 years in the making. The\nFirst and Last Town in Tennessee shares stories from Jonesborough’s past and present to\ncommemorate America’s Semiquincentennial. Written by Program Manager Anne G’Fellers-\nMason\, the play takes the audience on a journey from 1779\, the year of Jonesborough’s\nfounding\, to present day.\n“The title of the play is a combination of a nod to the Oldest Town in Tennessee as well as a\nreport from 1801 that referred to Jonesborough as\, ‘the last town in Tennessee\,’” Mason\nexplains. “For a moment\, Jonesborough was the edge of the Western frontier. We have such rich\nhistory right here with amazing stories that are a part of the American dream and experience\, and\nwe wanted to combine all that into this production. Where else do you get a chance to include\nstories about Governor John Sevier and President Andrew Jackson alongside Alfred Greenlee\,\nwho was known as a friend to all\, Beverly Jenkins of Main Street Café & Catering\, and Jimmy\nNeil Smith\, the founder of the National Storytelling Festival. All the major American events\, the\nRevolutionary War\, the Civil War\, the Civil Rights Movement\, and so on\, each of these played\nout on the local level\, and this play will capture that.”\nThe show includes a large cast of multiple ages. Characters in the play include the Shanks Oak\n(Jonesborough’s Heritage Tree)\, Julia Bullard Nelson (teacher at the Warner Institute and a\nsuffragette)\, longtime resident Jimmy Rhein\, Marat Moore (journalist/miner/advocate)\, David\nDeaderick (Jonesborough’s first merchant)\, Jesse Walton (Revolutionary War soldier)\, Ella\nRussell (only hospital trained nurse in town in the early 1900s)\, Elihu Embree (editor and\npublisher of The Emancipator)\, and so many more. The play will include music and dancing and\nwill be an experience for the whole family. The play will serve as the kick-off to the 250 th\ncelebration in Jonesborough. \n“Want to feel connected to your community\, country\, and past? You’ll want to come and see this\nplay. SUMMARY:Booker T. Washington School Tours
DESCRIPTION:This November\, the McKinney Center will host tours of the historic Booker T. Washington School building. Tours will begin on Friday\, November 14\, at 2:00 p.m.\, 4:00 p.m.\, and 6:00 p.m. The tours are free to the public and will last approximately 20 minutes. This event will take place at the McKinney Center\, located at 103 Franklin Avenue\, Jonesborough\, TN. Light refreshments will be provided. Those interested in Jonesborough’s history are invited to learn more about the significance of Booker T. Washington School. \nBooker T. Washington School was an institution for black children\, grades 1-8\, from 1940-1965\, when schools were integrated. The building served children from Washington County and surrounding areas\, including Limestone and Telford. After integration\, the school was closed\, and the building fell into disrepair. The Town of Jonesborough later renovated the building\, and in 2013\, the McKinney Center was opened. \n \nThe tours will cover the history of education in Jonesborough\, daily life at school\, and the integration movement. We will also cover more iconic moments at Booker T.\, such as Miss Brown’s “End of the Year” program\, where every student was given a chance to shine. For students at Booker T. Washington School\, the building served as more than an educational institution. Many alumni recall the space being a second home. The McKinney Center aims to preserve the history of Booker T. Washington School and the firsthand accounts told by its alumni. \nTours will be open to the public on Friday\, November 14\, at 2:00 p.m.\, 4:00 p.m.\, and 6:00 p.m. After November 14\, tours can be scheduled by calling the front desk at 423.753.562. \n \n##### \n \nAbout the McKinney Center at Booker T.
