Handmade crafters\, churches and non-profit organizations are the focus of the festival\, but it has recently been opened to retail vendors at a higher rate. This means there’s plenty of shopping!\n\nHeld at Unicoi Elementary School\, downtown is filled with thousands of visitors and becomes a magical place where scrumptious food\, musical entertainment\, special events\, and quality arts and crafts blend together to create the perfect atmosphere for family fun and community connection!\n\nAnd did we mention the strawberries? Scott’s Strawberry and Tomato Farms has a reputation for growing the most delicious strawberries in the region and since their booth is usually sold out before 2 p.m.\, it’s obvious they’re doing something right!

DESCRIPTION:Back 2 School Blowout \n\nFriday\, August 6\, 2021\nUnicoi Visitor Center \n7  to 11 p.m. \n\nThe Town of Unicoi will close out its summer festivities with a Back-2-School Blowout prior to its Drive-In Movie at the Caboose Friday\, August 6\, from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Unicoi Visitor Center just off exit 32.  \nThe family-friendly luau-themed party will kick off at 7 p.m. and features a slip-n-slide\, water shooters\, crazy sprinkler\, inflatable obstacle course and water balloon war\, as well as kid-friendly concessions and a free sweet treat to help the children cool off. Water activities end at 9 p.m. when the island-themed Disney movie begins! \n“This will be the perfect end to summer\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “We’ve added a few new items this year\, like the inflatable obstacle course\, and we’ve redesigned the slip-n-slide to have just a little more slope than when we debuted it two years ago.” \nUnicoi County Hospital and Unicoi County Public Library will be joining the festivities with fun activities and freebies\, as well as information on programs that can benefit children in the new school year. The Unicoi Volunteer Fire Department will also be on hand to keep the water flowing and everyone safe\, as well as providing a few goodies for the children and tours of the fire truck! \nGuests are encouraged to arrive hungry as concessions will be available under the pavilion beginning at 7 p.m. Hot dogs\, nachos and cheese\, chips\, candy and drinks are all on the menu. Parking will be in a drive-in movie format in the Mountain Harvest Kitchen lot and the screen will be attached to the caboose. \nGuests may enjoy the movie from their vehicles or may bring blankets and chairs and sit under the stars. Sound will be played through FM radio and outdoor speakers. \n“Our usage rights prevent us from naming the movie in the press\,” said director Shelton. “But I can tell you that we will be catching a wave to the Polynesian islands for the story of a young girl learning to become a master voyager.” \nThe Back-2-School Blowout begins at 7 p.m. at the Unicoi Visitor Center (106 Unicoi Village Pl.) and the movie will start at dark. Powershift\, a band of emergency first responders from Elizabethton\, will open the evening at 5:30 p.m. and warm the crowd with their country and rock tunes full of local flavor. \n“We’re ecstatic to be featuring a larger band this year\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “The Breakfast Club puts on a high-energy\, fun and nostalgic show that I think families are going to love.” \n“The success of the Strawberry Festival this year opened our eyes to the possibility that we might have even more visitors for our Fourth of July celebration\,” said Mayor Kathy Bullen. “So we want to make sure to put on a good show and expand our offerings to accommodate a larger celebration.” \nAs always\, the Unicoi Ruritan will be serving up favorites such as BBQ\, hot dogs and funnel cakes under the pavilion. But even more food options have been added this year with local church Casa de Dios offering tacos and tamales\, the Hungarian Sausage King Food Truck selling hamburgers\, italian sausages and Philly cheese steaks\, and Tommy’s Italian Ice serving up sweet treats like deep-fried oreos\, funnel cakes and italian ice sure to hit the spot. \nThe Unicoi County Hospital Fireworks Spectacular will close out the evening by lighting up the night sky at 9:30 p.m. with a magnificent display of colors and sound in honor of America’s freedom. Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs or blankets for seating and patriotic glow necklaces are available at the information booth for $1 each. Attendees are also asked to review the event’s parking maps\, which will be available on the town’s website soon\, and plan ahead to minimize traffic congestion. \n“Parking was an issue at the Strawberry Festival this year\,” said Director Shelton. “So we wanted to make sure we provided more options for Freedom Fest.” \nMountain Commerce Bank is providing complimentary shuttles that will begin at 4 p.m. and visitors are encouraged to utilize these lots prior to seeking downtown parking. Shuttle stops will be listed on the online parking map. \n“Our downtown village\, around the school where the event is held\, is mostly residential\,” said Unicoi Police Chief Andy Slagle. “We will be closing some streets and rerouting traffic in that area so it will be easier for visitors to take advantage of the shuttles and avoid the congestion.” \nAll shuttled lots will charge $5-$10 for parking and will be staffed by local civic\, youth and church groups.  Any organization interested in working a lot for the proceeds\, or a percentage of the proceeds depending upon the lot\, should contact the communications and programs department as soon as possible. \nFor locals that are used to parking downtown\, most churches in the village will be providing parking\, either for free or for a $5 charge\, including Unicoi Church of God and Unicoi United Methodist Church. Traffic will be controlled by Unicoi Police and most downtown streets will have a “traffic hold” placed on them for at least 45 minutes to an hour after the fireworks display. \n“We took the traffic hold straight out of Bristol Motor Speedway’s playbook\,” said Chief Slagle. “Safety is our number one priority and giving the pedestrians a chance to move out of the area prior to releasing the traffic flow is the right thing to do given it’s a nighttime event. We also ask for everyone’s patience after the fireworks as our officers work to get everyone home safely.” \nDesignated handicap parking will also be available downtown at Unicoi United Methodist Church and in the back parking lot of Unicoi Elementary School. \nThe Town of Unicoi extends its appreciation to Jones and Church Farms\, Unicoi County Hospital\, Mountain Commerce Bank\, East Tennessee Rent-Alls\, Whistle Stop Deli and Catering\, and Limestone Cove Market and Deli for their gracious support of Freedom Fest. DESCRIPTION:Unicoi\, Tenn. —  Vendor registration is now open for the Town of Unicoi’s 18th Annual Wayne Scott Strawberry Festival which will be held Saturday\, May 15\, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Unicoi Elementary School. Eligibility requirements have been changed this year and retail vendors will now be allowed to participate alongside the handmade craft vendors. A vintage car show is another new addition planned for the festival’s return\, as well as a few smaller surprises. \n“We’re looking forward to a brighter year for our events\,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Kathy Bullen. “Pandemic numbers are coming down and vaccine rates are going up\, so we’re excited to get back in the swing of things.” \nThe festival will feature live music and more than 100 vendors including crafters and retailers showcasing items ranging from pottery to soaps\, jewelry\, home decor and more\, and food vendors filling the festival grounds with the sweet smells of delicious local favorites. \nInterested vendors should visit ExploreUnicoi.com/events for more information and to download an application. Vendors may also register and pay through the EventBrite platform but will be charged a convenience fee through the platform itself. The registration deadline is May 12. \nThe East Tennessee Model-A Restorers Club will also be joining the festivities with a vintage car show along the far end of the field where vendor parking was previously located. Vendor parking will be relocated to the front lot of Unicoi Elementary School to make way for two rows of the beautiful antique automotive treasures. \n“We’re pretty excited about the car show\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “We want the festival to have something for everyone and I think this is another step closer to that goal.”  \nThere is no registration fee to participate in the car show\, but interested individuals are asked to contact Mike “Model-A Mac” McIntosh at (423) 743-5085 for more information. Vehicles must be more than 20 years old to qualify. \nThe festival will also offer plenty of fun for children. The cow train ride will be chugging through the festival at regular intervals and the loading/unloading station has been moved to the Kids’ Inflatable Zone for more accessibility.  The Tennessee National Guard will be joining the Kids Zone this year and will display one of their military vehicles while giving children a chance to test their strength through push-up challenges. \n“We know children have had a really rough time being cooped-up during the pandemic\,” Shelton said. “So we’re looking for creative ways to expand the offerings in the Kids’ Zone and I think the National Guard will certainly be a neat addition.” \nIn conjunction with the Wayne Scott Strawberry Festival\, Little Miss Southern Sparkle Pageants will once again host the Miss Strawberry Festival Pageant and awards will be presented on the main stage during the festival. Sound will be played through FM radio\, concessions will open at 5:30 p.m.\, a surprise visitor will arrive at 6 p.m. and the Christmas movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. \n“To finish up the year with a heart-warming Christmas favorite will give guests a little bit of hope\,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Johnny Lynch. “Despite the pandemic\, the holiday season is still about family and believing in the magic of the season.” \nLike past events\, the Clinchfield Caboose will support the screen with cars lining up back through the Mountain Harvest Kitchen parking lot and event sponsor Ambrosound\, a local professional audio\, video\, lighting and staging company\, will handle all projection and audio. Organizers also tease that someone from the movie will make a surprise appearance during the festivities and have a special gift for every child. \n“I can give a little hint that the movie involves a train\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “Which will be a lot of fun since we’re showing it at the caboose. DESCRIPTION:Unicoi\, Tenn. —  The Town of Unicoi is mixing up a different type of Christmas magic this year with its new “Christmas at the Caboose\,” which will be held Saturday\, December 12\, from 6-9 p.m. at the Tourist Information Center (106 Unicoi Village Place). \nThis COVID-friendly event will take the place of the town’s typical annual events including the Unicoi Christmas Parade\, Christmas at the Cabin and the “Taste of Unicoi” Christmas Open House\, all of which were canceled in light of the pandemic. \n“We’ve held the community’s safety as the top priority through all of this\,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Kathy Bullen. “Each event was analyzed for potential COVID risks and we think this will be a safer option for everyone.” \n“Christmas at the Caboose” will include a free drive-thru light display\, created by professional designer Gabriel’s Christmas in Jonesborough\, around the Mountain Harvest Kitchen and a Christmas Village where guests can enjoy Christmas cakes\, treats and hot chocolate while favorite Christmas characters frolic to the sounds of the season. \nSanta and Mrs. Clause will be flying into the valley for a special visit and children will be allowed to place their “Letters to Santa” in his mailbox before catching their very own stocking! Santa will use a slide to deliver presents down to the children from atop the historic Clinchfield CRR 1111 caboose to minimize the risk of COVID-19 exposure. \n“We think this is going to be a fun way to herald the Christmas season\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “One outdoor event will be much safer than the typical events we host while still giving residents a chance to celebrate with their neighbors.” \n“That sense of community is important to our residents\,” Mayor Bullen added. “So it’s crucial to find ways to adapt to this pandemic and reorganize our events accordingly.” \n“We’ve done that by setting up stations throughout the village\,” said Shelton. “After guests experience the drive-thru light display\, they can park and rotate through the village stations before heading back home to warm up.” \nThe Buffalo Pavilion will transform into the “Snowflake Snack Shack” and will serve delicious Christmas cakes\, hot chocolate\, and other tasty treats such as s’mores packs that families can use at nearby fire pits. \n“We’re going to have three fire pits scattered throughout the village so guests have room to spread out while roasting marshmallows and keeping warm\,” said Shelton. “Everything will be socially distanced\, grill sticks will be disposable and of course our food handlers will be taking even more precautions.” \nAfter sweet treats and gifts from Santa Clause\, families are encouraged to swing by “Santa’s Landing Zone” to take a photo with Santa’s antique sleigh and his favorite reindeer\, Mary. The organization will serve both active and retired military members in a drive-thru\, “boxed lunch” format Saturday\, November 21\, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Tourist Information Center in Unicoi. \n“We were cautious this year\,” said History Group President Lisa Willis. “We wanted to wait to host this lunch until we found a way to do it safely.” \nThe boxed meal will consist of the veteran’s choice of homemade hero sandwich (turkey or ham)\, soup (vegetable beef or chicken rice)\, and a dessert. Sound will be played through FM radio\, a costume contest will be held at 7 p.m. and concessions will be available beginning at 6:30 p.m. \n“The last drive-in was a big hit with our residents\,” said Town of Unicoi Mayor Johnny Lynch. “People are desperate for events right now and this is one that can be done safely.” \nLike the September event\, the Clinchfield Caboose will support the screen with cars lining up back through the Mountain Harvest Kitchen parking lot\, and the feature will be a family-friendly Halloween movie. But one big change from the last movie is the addition of Ambrosound\, a local professional audio\, video\, lighting and staging company. \n“We’re excited to partner with Ambrosound for a more professional movie experience this time\,” said Communications and Programs Director Ashley Shelton. “Todd and his team do a great job at our festivals and I’m so glad we won’t have to worry about equipment reliability … they’ll handle all that.” \nAnother difference from September will be the addition of a Halloween Costume Contest to celebrate the season. There will be categories  for both children and adults  and winners will receive passes to Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium. The contest begins at 7 p.m. and all participants must wear masks. Only contestants are allowed up front for judging while all guests are asked to remain in their vehicles and “honk” for their favorite costumes. The contest will be livestreamed on the town’s Facebook page so guests in the back may have a “virtual front-row view.” \n“We can’t wait to see all the cute and spooky costumes\,” said Shelton. “And we hope the adults get creative too! These movie events are all about family fun.” \nConcessions will open at 6:30 p.m.\, and this time hot dogs have been added to the list. Little Caesars Pizza for $1 per slice or $6 for a whole pie will also be available. The addition of a theme\, “A Fairytale Christmas\,” is just one of the fun surprises\nfor parade-goers this year. \n“We want to get our entries familiar with decorating around a theme\,” said Communications and\nPrograms Director Ashley Shelton. “We’ve been discussing the possibility of adding a judging element to the\nparade in the future so we’re trying to gauge how much participation we might expect.” \nThe Unicoi Christmas Parade will begin at the Cherokee National Forest Office and continue down\nUnicoi Drive before turning onto Tennessee Street. From there\, the parade will turn right onto Lincoln then left\nonto Massachusetts before ending at the Unicoi Elementary School. \n“I think residents will really enjoy the event this year\,” said Unicoi Mayor Johnny Lynch. “The town’s\nfloat has a completely new look and we’ve even got some very popular characters coming for a visit.”\nFloats\, characters\, classic cars\, horses and more will parade down the streets while candy is distributed\nto the long line of community members. And in true tradition\, Santa Clause will herald in the season atop the\nTown of Unicoi Float at the end of the parade. \nCivic\, church and school groups\, as well as businesses\, pageant winners and elected officials are\ninvited to enter the parade to showcase their talents and community spirit. The Unicoi Volunteer Fire\nDepartment\, Unicoi History Group\, Unaka Mountain Search and Rescue\, Shriners\, and the Unicoi High School\nMarching Band are just a few of the groups that have already submitted their application and there is still plenty\nof time to register. \nApplications are available at the Tourist Information Center (106 Unicoi Village Pl.) and Town Hall\n(3600 Unicoi Dr.) or can be downloaded or submitted online. Mary the Town Cow will be\nwelcoming visitors from her pen and sheep will be on display too! \n“There is so much to learn in Unicoi\,” said History Group member Lesia Willis. “We work hard to share\nour heritage and make sure younger generations hear the stories and see the ways in which things were done\nbefore technology took over.” \nHeritage Days is open to the public Saturday\, but the event is also held Friday for registered school\ngroups.
