DESCRIPTION:Bays Mountain Park announces annual StarWatch program \n  \nBays Mountain Park’s night sky observing sessions – StarWatch – has returned for the spring season. \n\nStarWatch sessions allow the public to enjoy the splendor of the night sky at Bays Mountain Park’s observatories. If the weather is good\, attendees can typically see star clusters\, nebulous gas clouds\, colorful multiple-star systems\, distant galaxies and the Moon and planets. \n\nIf the weather is poor\, the park will have an alternate activity in the planetarium theater. \n\nStarWatch sessions will be held on the following dates: \n\nMarch 1 and 8 at 7 p.m.\nMarch 15\, 22\, and 29 at 8 p.m.\nApril 5\, 12\, 19\, and 26 at 8:30 p.m.\n\n\nNote – please arrive at the beginning of the program so you can find your way to the observatories. \n\nBe sure to dress for temperatures at least 20 degrees cooler than expected and do not use white light flashlights at the observing grounds. This is a free event and does not require registration. \n\nStarWatch is hosted by the Bays Mountain Astronomy Club & Bays Mountain Planetarium. SUMMARY:Wilderness First Aid Course
DESCRIPTION:This is for you if: You want to be an asset to yourself and others by being prepared to treat injury and illness when help is not close-at-hand. \nWilderness environments create special situations not usually encountered in an urban or suburban environment.  With ASHI Wilderness First Aid training\, first aid providers in a wilderness setting will be better prepared to respond when faced with limited resources\, longer times to care for someone\, and decisions about when and how fast to evacuate an ill or injured person. This 16-hour course covers wilderness and remote first aid from a basic understanding of emergency response in an outdoor setting to specific techniques and considerations for a wide range of injuries and illnesses. \nASHI is a nationally accredited organization of the Commission on Accreditation of Pre-Hospital Continuing Education and its CPR\, AED and first aid training programs are equivalent to the programs offered by both the American Heart Association (AHA) and the American Red Cross (ARC). It conforms to the 2015 AHA Guidelines Update for First Aid and also meets or exceeds the Boy Scouts of America Wilderness First Aid Curriculum and Doctrine Guidelines\, 2017 Edition. Upon successful completion participants are issued a certification card good for 2 years. \nCPR is not included but is typically scheduled as a separate class the evening of the first day for those wishing to add it by selecting the CPR Add-on option during check out. Tuition includes online access to the student book; a hard copy is available for an additional cost. Previous completion of Basic First Aid recommended but not required. Age 12+. \nHighlights: \n\n2 days of classroom and hands-on wilderness first aid training that is comprehensive\, professional and fun\nExposure to a wide range of techniques and skills\nMultiple opportunities to perform patient assessment and provide care in simulated scenarios\nA supportive learning environment

Attendees will enjoy a long weekend of astronomical fun and learning with fellow astronomy enthusiasts. \n\nThe theme for this year’s convention is “Moonstruck” with the event showcasing four speakers who are experts in their knowledge and research about the Moon and other moons in our Solar System. The convention also includes door prizes\, the ever-popular swap shop and telescope viewings. \n\n“There’s a lot going on now in astronomy and space exploration regarding these natural satellites and our speakers will be guiding us through this moonscape of wonder\,” said Planetarium Director Adam Thanz. “We think you’ll really enjoy this year’s topic and speakers.” \n\nGuest speakers include: \n\nDr. Erika Grundstrom – Director of Astronomy Labs – Vanderbilt University\nDr. Sarah Milkovich – Planetary Geologist and Spacecraft Engineer\nDr. Amy L. DESCRIPTION:Bays Mountain Park hosts annual Kids at Bays Day \nBays Mountain Park is hosting its annual Kids at Bays Day later this month as an opportunity for children of all ages to enjoy the outdoors while participating in a variety of engaging activities at the park. \nKids at Bays Day will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 18. All of the animal habitats\, hiking and biking trails and the Nature Center will be open for discovery and exploration. In addition\, food trucks will be on site and located behind the Day Camp cabin. \nAll of the following events are free with a $7 paid entrance fee: \n\nMountain Bike Workshop: 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. in the bike parking lot. You must bring your own bike and helmet.\nYoga for Kids: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on the observatory lawn.\nAstronomy Day: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the Lily Pad Pavilion.\nGrowth Ring Challenge: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Nature Center balcony.\nMake a Mountain Toy: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Farmstead Museum.\nRock Painting: 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Farmstead Museum.\n\nThe park will also have free programs on snakes\, raptors\, wolves\, growing plants and other types of animals that live in the woods. The observatory will offer a night viewing of the sky from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. \n“Kids at Bays Day is a great opportunity to get your children out of the house\, away from their devices and to reconnect with nature\,” said Megan Krager\, Bays Mountain Park manager. “We’ll have a variety of programs happening all across the park that day\, so no matter your interests we should have something right up your alley.” \nIn addition to the free programs\, the park will also have its usual paid programs on May 18. DESCRIPTION:Bays Mountain Park hosting Barre & Yoga on the Barge \nBays Mountain Park is partnering with a local yoga instructor to offer residents a new type of yoga class\, one that takes place in the morning on the park’s barge. \nThe class is called Barre and Yoga on the Barge\, and the one-hour session will take place on April 13\, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Inspired by elements of ballet\, yoga and Pilates\, barre is a workout technique designed to target major muscle groups via small movements. \nThe cost is $8 per person and class size is limited to 14 people. DESCRIPTION:Bays Mountain Park is hosting its first-ever “Holiday at Bays” event this month with an evening of festive activities\, including wreath-making\, barge rides\, owl searching\, and an amazing laser light show in the planetarium. \nHoliday at Bays will take place on December 9\, kicking off with a holiday laser light show at 5:30 p.m. in the planetarium (Cost: $10 per person). Then\, if you choose\, you can participate in a second activity (Owl Prowl\, Barge Ride or Wreath Workshop) for an additional fee. \nLaser Light Show: \nCelebrate the season under the planetarium dome with a selection of our favorite holiday tunes brought to life with gorgeous laser choreography\, full dome visuals and colorful lighting effects. Vibrant animations and gorgeous abstracts dance above your heads\, as the music takes you away from the hustle and bustle of daily life. It might be cold outside\, but it’s nice and toasty under the dome. \nOwl Prowl: \nJoin naturalist Fred Hilton on a journey through the winter forests as he puts his owl calling skills to the test. This program will involve a short hike and participants should be prepared with sturdy shoes\, warm jackets\, and flashlights. \n\nBarge Ride: \nEnjoy a nighttime barge ride around our lake under the glow of Christmas lights. Participants will explore the lake and talk about the history of Christmas in Appalachia. Hot chocolate will be served prior to boarding but be sure to dress warmly as it will be cold on the water. \n\nWreath Workshop: \nContinue the tradition of wreath making using natural materials found right in our own backyards. This class is a great way to express your creativity and learn a little about Christmas of times past. The park will provide all the materials. DESCRIPTION:Bays Mountain Park and Planetarium has scheduled a special\, one-night-only program next month featuring Paul Curnow – an astronomy lecturer at the Adelaide Planetarium in South Australia. \nCurnow will be live at the planetarium hosting “Night Skies of Aboriginal Australia” – a program showcasing Aboriginal Dreaming stories\, their dark pattern shapes\, the names given to the stars and the differences between the way the sky is viewed compared to the classical 88 constellations used by contemporary astronomers. \nThe 60-minute program will take place at 7 p.m. on November 10. Registration is required. Tickets are $15 each or $10 for children 12 or younger. This connection with the night sky represents some of the earliest ponderings about the cosmos and was an effort to explain natural phenomena.
