SUMMARY:Bristol Historical Society: Wythe County History
DESCRIPTION:Wythe County history is topic of BHA meeting\n\nBristol Virginia – Wytheville native\, Michael Gillman\, will be the featured speaker before the Bristol Historical Association in February.  Gillman\, who is the Coordinator of Heritage Sites and Programs for the Town of Wytheville\, will present the program\, “Resolved to live or Die”\, Southwest Virginia in the Revolution.  The meeting will be held on Monday\, February 10\, 6:30pm\, at the Bristol Public Library.  The general public is invited to attend this free event. \n  \nWythe County’s history is very strategic to the history of Southwest Virginia.  The current location of Fort Chiswell is the site of a frontier fort built in 1758 as an outpost during the French and Indian War. The fort was of strategic importance during the American Revolution as the guard post over a deposit of lead used by the militia to mold bullets.  It was situated at the junction of the Great Trading Path and the Richmond Road\, near the New River. \n  \nWythe County was created after the American Revolution in 1789 and named for George Wythe\, the “father of American Jurisprudence” and signer of the Declaration of Independence. In May 1790\, 100 acres of land was donated to establish a town and county seat at Wytheville.  The fort fell into disrepair after the county seat and courthouse were moved from Fort Chiswell to its new location at Wytheville.  Gillman will discuss the history and importance of Fort Chiswell\, the lead mines and the Fincastle Resolutions. \n  \nMichael Gillman was born and raised in Wytheville. He is currently the Coordinator of Heritage Sites and Programs for the Town of Wytheville\, Department of Museums.  He is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Business-Project Management from Liberty University Online. He is an avid Southwest Virginia material culture and decorative arts collector. A member of the Fincastle/Montgomery County Militia of Southwest Virginia living history group\, he most recently was named as an advisor to an upcoming PBS series. \n  \nThe February 10th meeting is open to the public and held in conjunction with the library’s mission of “Expanding Minds and Building Community”.  Contact Tim Buchanan\, Program Chairman\, for details of this or other upcoming programs\, by e-mail; buchanan03@bvu.net. Visit our Facebook page for details\, BRISTOL HISTORY. Judge Charles Flannagan was recently named as the new president of the Bristol Historical Association. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Bristol Historical Association Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Virginia – The Bristol Historical Association will welcome author Eric Buckland on Monday\, November 18 to speak on an early Bristol resident and Confederate raider\, John Singleton Mosby.  Buckland’s program is entitled\, The Perfect Man in the Perfect Place\, the story of Colonel John Singleton Mosby.  The meeting will be held at the Bristol Public Library at 6:30pm and is free to the public. \n\nMosby moved to Bristol\, Virginia\, then known as Goodson\, and opened the town’s first law office but soon enlisted in the Confederate army at the outbreak of the Civil War. Where his law practice might have been lacking he found his success raiding Union encampments and with lightning-quick attacks and eluding capture\, disappearing and blending in with local farmers and townsmen. By the end of the war\, about eight hundred men had been mustered into the 43rd Battalion Virginia Cavalry\, named Mosby’s Rangers. Nearly two thousand men rode with him over the period of January 1\, 1863 to April 21\, 1865. \n\nThe November program will focus on Mosby’s military skill. Eric Buckland has written five books on Mosby\, with several telling the stories of some of the men who rode with Mosby’s Rangers during the “War Between the States”. His two newest books are “They Rode With Mosby” which provides the reader with in-depth biographical information and stories about twenty-four of Mosby’s most well-known men\, and\, “From Rockbridge To Loudoun” which tells the stories of the Fifty-seven men who attended the Virginia Military Institute (VMI) and rode with Mosby’s Rangers. \n\nBuckland has received two of the prestigious United Daughters of the Confederacy’s Jefferson Davis Historical Gold Medals for his writing and research. He graduated from the University of Kansas with a B.A. in English and a commission as a 2LT in the United States Army. After a 22-year military career\, Buckland retired from the Army as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1999. Eric served the majority of his time in Special Forces. Some of his awards include the Special Forces and Ranger Tabs\, Master Parachutist Badge\, Combat Diver Badge and the Combat Infantryman’s Badge. Eric is currently the President of The Stuart-Mosby Historical Society. \n\nThe November 18th meeting is open to the public and held in conjunction with the library’s mission of “Expanding Minds and Building Community”.  Contact Tim Buchanan\, program chairman\, for details of this or other upcoming programs\, buchanan03@bvu.net. SUMMARY:Bristol Historical Association Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Bristol Virginia – The March 11th meeting of the Bristol Historical Association will feature a presentation by a local physician\, Robin Feierabend\, entitled\, “Great Influenza Pandemic of 1918:  Its Impact on Bristol and the Surrounding Region”.  The meeting will begin at 6:30pm in the Kegley Meeting Room at the Bristol Public Library\, and is free to the public. \n\nThe influenza pandemic of 1918 was the most deadly disease outbreak in history\, infecting more than a quarter of the world population at the time\, and killing between 50 and 100 million people worldwide.  Approximately 8% of Nashville’s population died between September 1918 and March 1919\, one of the highest death rates in the country. Although not as severely affected as Nashville and some other areas of the country\, Bristol (along with the Tri Cities and surrounding areas of east Tennessee and southwest Virginia) experienced the widespread outbreak of influenza\, with its associated mortality and great disruption of daily life. \n\nThe presentation will focus on the regional impact of the pandemic\, largely through the pages of the Bristol Herald Courier.  In addition to a recounting of some of the personal and family tragedies wrought by the disease\, the presentation will include an examination of some of the underlying factors\, the timeline of the local epidemic\, public responses to it\, and lessons learned from it. \n\nDr. Robin Feierabend is a native of Southern Louisiana and graduated with a BA degree in Biology from Amherst College and his MD degree from Tulane University. Now fully retired\, he practiced four years at Clinch River Health Services in Dungannon VA. He later became full time faculty in the Department of Family Medicine at the Quillen College of Medicine from 1982 through 2014\, primarily based at ETSU Family Physicians of Bristol.  He fully retired in 2018. \n\nThis informative program is free to the public and is in partnership with the Bristol Public Library’s mission of “Expanding Minds and Building Community”.  Contact Tim Buchanan\, program chairman\, for details of this or other upcoming programs\, buchanan03@bvu.net. SUMMARY:Bristol Historical Association “Big Creek\, Anne W. Armstrong\, and the Log House on Lavinder Lane”
DESCRIPTION:The Bristol Historical Association is presenting the program “Big Creek\, Anne W. Armstrong\, and the Log House on Lavinder Lane” for their monthly meeting at 6:30 PM on November 19 at the Bristol Public Library.  The BHA Historic Markers Committee has conducted extensive research in anticipation of discovering whether the log house at 315 Lavinder Lane\, owned by Ronald and Tanya Rogers\, was the Anne Armstrong log house. Was it originally built at Big Creek community in Sullivan County\, TN\, disassembled and re-assembled at Lavinder Lane in Bristol\, Tennessee? Big Creek was a former resort community that was ultimately flooded by the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to construct South Holston Dam.\n \nThe Historic Markers Committee\, with members Linda Kirk\, Joyce Kistner\, Brenda Otis\, and Dr. William Wade\, researches potentially historic commercial and residential buildings that\, when meeting certain criteria\, are considered historic to the Bristol\, TN/VA area.   The Committee then awards the property with a historic marker plaque that can be displayed on the building.\n \nLinda Kirk\, Committee Chair and BHA Board Member\, is one of the researchers and presenters of this program.  Also presenting is Dr. Katherine Hoffman\, founder and principal consultant for Appalworks (www.appalworks.com) in Johnson City\, TN\, a company designed to promote cultural heritage as a tool for both place-based\, sustainable economic development and for the educational advancement of the region’s students.  Dr. Hoffman is also considered the literary expert of the works of Anne W. Armstrong\, a prominent national author\, novelist and pioneering businesswoman in the 1920s – 1950s.  Mrs. Armstrong\, known particularly for her book\, This Day and Time\, which portrays rural life in an Appalachian community\, lived in the Big Creek Community and was forced to relocate when her property was seized by the TVA.\n \nLocal oral history claims the log house at 315 Lavinder Lane was Anne W. Armstrong’s house from Big Creek\, re-assembled in the exact\, original design in which it was standing at Big Creek.  Is it the Armstrong house?  \n \nAnswers to this and many more questions about Big Creek and the Armstrong family will be revealed at the presentation on November 19.  This BHA meeting is open to the public and held in conjunction with the library’s mission of “Expanding Minds and Building Community”.  \n \nContact Tim Buchanan\, BHA Program Chairman\, for details of this and other upcoming BHA programs at buchanan03@bvu.net\, or visit the association’s Facebook page\, Bristol History.
