The\nFirst and Last Town in Tennessee shares stories from Jonesborough’s past and present to\ncommemorate America’s Semiquincentennial. Written by Program Manager Anne G’Fellers-\nMason\, the play takes the audience on a journey from 1779\, the year of Jonesborough’s\nfounding\, to present day.\n“The title of the play is a combination of a nod to the Oldest Town in Tennessee as well as a\nreport from 1801 that referred to Jonesborough as\, ‘the last town in Tennessee\,’” Mason\nexplains. “For a moment\, Jonesborough was the edge of the Western frontier. We have such rich\nhistory right here with amazing stories that are a part of the American dream and experience\, and\nwe wanted to combine all that into this production. Where else do you get a chance to include\nstories about Governor John Sevier and President Andrew Jackson alongside Alfred Greenlee\,\nwho was known as a friend to all\, Beverly Jenkins of Main Street Café & Catering\, and Jimmy\nNeil Smith\, the founder of the National Storytelling Festival. All the major American events\, the\nRevolutionary War\, the Civil War\, the Civil Rights Movement\, and so on\, each of these played\nout on the local level\, and this play will capture that.”\nThe show includes a large cast of multiple ages. Characters in the play include the Shanks Oak\n(Jonesborough’s Heritage Tree)\, Julia Bullard Nelson (teacher at the Warner Institute and a\nsuffragette)\, longtime resident Jimmy Rhein\, Marat Moore (journalist/miner/advocate)\, David\nDeaderick (Jonesborough’s first merchant)\, Jesse Walton (Revolutionary War soldier)\, Ella\nRussell (only hospital trained nurse in town in the early 1900s)\, Elihu Embree (editor and\npublisher of The Emancipator)\, and so many more. The play will include music and dancing and\nwill be an experience for the whole family. SUMMARY:StoryTown Radio Show Gala
DESCRIPTION:The award-winning StoryTown Radio Show will celebrate 15 years of its popular live production at the McKinney Center with a special Gala performance on January 26 at 7 p.m. \n  \nStoryTown is reminiscent of old-time radio shows popular in the 1930s-1950s\, featuring actors performing local stories and complete with live sound effects created on the spot. Each show also features one of the top music acts in the region. The Radio Show has many surprises planned for its 15 season. Get a ticket to the January show\, or better yet\, a 2026 Season Pass\, and experience all the magic. \n  \nThe special opening Gala performance is titled “Tell Me a Story: Radio Show Greatest Hits” and will feature popular stories and fan favorites from the past fifteen seasons\, like Leon Overbay’s beloved tales from Boone’s Creek and the hilarious recollection of working at the Farm to Table Dinner. Cast members who haven’t been in the show for a while will be back on the McKinney Center stage\, ready to celebrate. SUMMARY:Soups and Songs
DESCRIPTION:This annual fundraiser kicks off the holiday season each year\, always falling on the Monday after Thanksgiving. This year\, the date is December 1. The McKinney Center and the cast of the StoryTown Radio Show present this unique event\, which brings together food\, art\, music\, and storytelling. \n  \nGuests are warmed in body and spirit as they are treated to a delicious dinner of soup\, salad\, bread\, and cookies. Afterward\, they’ll be invited to kick back and enjoy a special version of the Radio Show featuring holiday carols\, festive songs\, and heartwarming stories. Musical acts for this year’s event include the Jonesborough Novelty Band\, violinist Chloe Suarez\, and the Thankful Baptist Church Mass Choir. Each guest receives a beautiful\, hand-made ceramic ornament. \n  \nAll the soups are prepared locally\, with at least one vegetarian option available. Guests may continue to fill their bowls\, trying one or all the delicious offerings. \n  \nTickets to this fundraising event are $35 and will support the McKinney Center’s special programming\, including the StoryTown Radio Show. DESCRIPTION:Things are getting dark and mysterious at theStoryTown Radio Show on October 27 at the McKinney Center. Celebrate the season with true and chilling stories all about “Haints\, Hollers\, and Halloween.” Have you ever seen the Wampus Cat wandering the banks of the Nolichucky River? We’ve got tales about that local legend as well as dropped calls\, ghostly roommates\, and much more. \n  \nStoryTown performs in the format of a live\, old-time radio show complete with sound effects\, musical underscoring\, live skits\, unique commercials\, and a musical guest. Joining the cast this month is Katie Hoffman. The Executive Director of Create Appalachia\, Katie is also a scholar and performer of traditional Appalachian ballads and a singer/songwriter. Her 2004 CD\, Beautiful Day\, was produced by Raymond W. McLain and features the East Tennessee State University Bluegrass Pride Band. She was the traditional music producer for a 4-part PBS series entitled Appalachia: A History of Mountains and People. On October 27\, she’ll be treating the audience to some traditional murder ballads. Popcorn\, candy\, and drinks will be available for purchase during the show. \n  \nCatch the show at 7 p.m. at the McKinney Center. DESCRIPTION:Tis the season for haints\, spirits\, and haunted trivia night. The scream team of the McSpooky Center and the Scare-itage Alliance are back again for Halloween Trivia Night. Join us on October 24 for a frighteningly fun Halloween Trivia contest with questions to test your knowledge of all things ghostly\, strange\, macabre\, and historical! \nThe festivities will take place on Friday\, October 24\, at 7 p.m. at the McKinney Center with Halloween-themed trivia questions\, friendly competition\, a costume contest and a ton of fun! Not a “history buff?” No reason to fear! These questions cover a wide range of topics and categories and include something for everyone. Main Street Café will be set up to sell a terrifying assortment of beers\, and this year\, you can place a dinner order with The Opossum’s Tale pub on Fox Street. You can call The Opossum’s Tale at 423.788.6782 and place an order by 5 p.m. on game day. They’ll bring your order up to the McKinney Center by 6:30 p.m.\, how frightfully delicious. \nIt’s only $8.00 per person to play. (Admission price does not include beer or food.) Tickets are available online at Jonesborough.com/tickets. Solo play is allowed. Teams are encouraged\, but the person limit per team is 8 people. This year’s event will take place on October 12 from 2-4 p.m. at the McKinney Center\, 103 Franklin Avenue\, Jonesborough\, TN. \nTellabration!™ is a global storytelling event trademarked by the National Storytelling Network\, which brings together storytellers and story lovers from all walks of life. The Jonesborough Storytellers Guild\, renowned for its long-standing tradition of storytelling excellence\, is excited to contribute to this international celebration. \nDiscover the Joy of Story \nTellabration!™ 2025 will be an afternoon brimming with engaging storytelling\, lively community connections\, and exciting door prizes. Attendees will be treated to performances by three of the most captivating storytellers in the region and the Appalachian Moon Youth Tellers\, each bringing their unique style and stories to the stage. \nMeet the Storytellers \nSherry Lovett is a storyteller with a passion for connecting people through the timeless art of storytelling. With over twenty years of experience in performing and teaching\, Sherry draws inspiration from her Scot-Irish roots and her rich North Carolina heritage\, which spans from the rugged mountains to the coastal shores. She believes that stories have the power to inspire\, uplift\, and unite\, and her mission is to bring those experiences to life\, whether through an old ballad\, an adventurous tale of King Arthur\, or a hearty laugh over the antics of Jack. No matter where your storytelling journey takes you\, Sherry will guide you with warmth\, wisdom\, and a deep love for the art of storytelling. \nCatherine Yael Serota is a Southern Appalachian native who weaves history\, personal narrative\, and Jack Tales together in a delightful presentation. Listeners say\, “She paints pictures with her words.” The author of “An Appalachian Life: A Storyteller’s Perspective ” (2025)\, she is currently writing “The Three Continents” to be released in 2027. A former mental health therapist\, Catherine is enjoying retirement writing\, telling stories regionally\, gardening\, cooking\, and travel with her husband Wallace Shealy. \nSamuel Smith was born and raised in Mountain City\, TN.  He began his storytelling journey three years ago.  His favorite stories to tell are stories about the Appalachian Region and its people. \nDr. Delanna Reed devoted 25 years to teaching storytelling at East Tennessee State University. First captivated by the magic of storytelling while in college\, Delanna continued to tell stories throughout her teaching career. She delights audiences with folktales\, personal stories\, and oral history stories\, often incorporating music into her performance. Her favorite stories expand our understanding of humanity\, bring laughter\, and touch upon the sacred. \nWallace Shealy\, Emcee The Storytelling Arts Center of the Southeast by jury declared Shealy – the Bold-Faced Liar Champion. With a twinkle in his eye\, Shealy said\, “of course I embellished the truth slightly.” The Mountain Xpress said in their opinion “Shealy exaggerates more than slightly.” The Tribune revealed that this upstanding local had been caught lying. It doesn’t matter if he is recalling a tale from his childhood\, telling a story based on the Good Book or spinning a yarn you will be delighted listening to him stretch the truth all out of proportion. \nJoin the Celebration \nThe Jonesborough Storytellers Guild has been sharing live storytelling in downtown Jonesborough for over 30 years and is the longest-running storytelling guild in the United States. DESCRIPTION:This October\, the McKinney Center is proud to present the 11th year of A Spot on the Hill\, the original\, research-based play all about the inhabitants of the Old Jonesborough Cemetery. Created by Anne G’Fellers-Mason\, this edition of Jonesborough’s cemetery play features new characters. Stories include Dr. Matthew Mahoney\, one of the founders of the Herald & Tribune newspaper\, Mrs. Elizabeth C. Johnson\, a descendant of John Sevier\, and Mr. Henry Shade whose work with the Southern Railway did not go as planned. \nWhile most performances take place in the historic cemetery\, there is a special indoor matinee scheduled for 2:00 p.m. on Saturday\, October 11. This performance will take place at the McKinney Center. Chairs will be provided for guests. Seating is general admission\, and the doors will open at 1:30 p.m. The show is a little over an hour in length. SUMMARY:Graveyard Tales
DESCRIPTION:Real? Imagined? Who knows? Creepy tales unfold from stories passed down\, legends and myths\, and things that go screech in the night with the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild on Aug. 30 for two special concerts at the McKinney Center. \nThe Jonesborough Guild is the oldest continuing group of storytellers in the nation. Graveyard Tales will include spooky stories of local legends\, creepy creatures\, and bone-chilling lore. The 5 p.m. show is an all-ages event\, while the 7 p.m. show is intended for children over the age of 12. \nFeatured storytellers include: \nTravis Wolven\nTravis was raised in a house filled with unexplained phenomena from small creaks and door cracks to full-on apparitions noted by family and neighbors alike. Having taken ghost hunting classes in Massachusetts and enjoying the experience of living and storytelling in a multidimensional world of spirits\, he especially enjoys dusting off myths and legends of old. Travis is a recent graduate from the ETSU Communication and Storytelling Master’s Program\, as well as a new Performing Member with the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild. \nVianna Isbister\nVianna is a dynamic multi-hyphenate performer and academic with a B.A. in Theatre and an M.A. in Communication and Storytelling Studies. Her work bridges the gap between the spoken and the unspoken\, blending performance art with academic insights to craft narratives. Her work has recently been featured at the 2025 National Storytelling Network Conference and as an author of a book chapter in Memorial Art in Rhetorical Discourse in 2026. She has performed with Night Owl Circus Arts\, ETSU\, Jonesborough Storytellers Guild\, and online with Artists Standing Strong Together\, to name a few. \nJudy “Butterfly” Farlow\nAs a Performing Member of Jonesborough Storytellers Guild for more than 20 years\, and with storytelling training from both ETSU and Callenwald in Atlanta\, Judy has told stories from backyard BBQ’s to the White House. She grew up in a family rich with story traditions and has a repertoire of characters\, including Mrs. Santa\, Spooky Witch\, Fairy Godmother\, as well as beloved Butterfly the Clown.  Her stories of goulies and ghosties\, long-legged beasties\, and things that go bump in the night will have you still shivering long after the show. \nEmily Katt\nEmily has had a range of career hats she’s worn\, all of them involving communication: educator\, former magazine editor\, academic researcher\, veterinary professional\, and a writer of fiction\, nonfiction\, and poetry. Selections last year included pulled pork\, ribs\, smoked meatloaf\, and fish. There are picnic benches behind the McKinney Center for visitors to sit and eat during the event. The intense investigation\, arrests\, and court case that followed consumed the attention of the town for several weeks. But justice was never found for Officer Hood\, and the rifts that followed the jury’s decision pushed the crime into the shadows\, not to be talked about. This interactive play\, with opportunities for the audience to investigate alongside the characters\, will present all the evidence and sources from the time. What really happened that night? DESCRIPTION:Jonesborough\, TN – Inspired by a true crime from Jonesborough’s past\, “Can’t Get Away with This” is an original play written by Anne G’Fellers-Mason. It will be performed at the McKinney Center on July 18th\, 19th\, 25th\, and 26th at 7:30 p.m. and on July 19th and 26th at 2:00 p.m.\nOn August 26\, 1928\, the body of Officer James Hood was found on Main Street on the lawn of the Second Presbyterian Church\, now the Central Christian Church\, and it was obvious he’d met with foul play. The intense investigation\, arrests\, and court case that followed consumed the attention of the town for several weeks. But justice was never found for Officer Hood\, and the rifts that followed the jury’s decision pushed the crime into the shadows\, not to be talked about. This interactive play\, with opportunities for the audience to investigate alongside the characters\, will present all the evidence and sources from the time. What really happened that night? Come and be a part of the play and discover for yourself.\n“This is a story I’ve wanted to research and write for years\,” shares Mason who will also be directing the play. “Some voices from the past cry out to me louder than others\, and Officer Hood’s was one of those. I see this play as a way to shed light on an injustice from the past and hopefully bring some peace to a painful situation. It’s only by embracing our past that we can learn from it.” Officer Hood is the only Jonesborough police officer to be killed in the line of duty. “I hope the audience will be on the edge of their seats like I was when I was researching this play\,” Mason adds. “It’s a real nail biter.”\nTickets are $17 and are available for purchase at Jonesborough.com/tickets or by calling the Visitors Center at 423-753-1010.
