Its puzzles abound: the balds lie below climatic tree line\, yet\nare treeless. They are dominated by native grasses and other southern Appalachian flora\, yet are also home to rare\nplants whose main range is in the far north. Do the balds of Roan Mountain constitute a natural biological\ncommunity\, or do they somehow owe their existence to humans…or both? Are these balds unique\, or are there other\necological versions of the balds out there\, and if so what do they teach us? In this talk I will discuss the geological\nand ecological history of Roan Mountain and its magnificent grassy balds\, and explore some of the main hypotheses\nfor the origin and maintenance of the balds from the speculations of early naturalist-explorers to the investigations of\nmodern ecologists. \nSATURDAY AFTER LUNCH PROGRAM:\n“Sharks and Alligators of Southern Appalachia” Jeremy Stout\nSATURDAY EVENING PROGRAM:\n“Can’t See the Forest for the Trees? Look at the Birds Instead” Adrianna Nelson\nAdrianna began birding at the age of 9 when a Dark-eyed Junco appeared in her yard on a cold winter day. She\nwas immediately hooked and became involved in local groups like the Bristol Bird Club\, Steele Creek Park\nNature Center\, and the Tennessee Bluebird Society. Her undergraduate studies on songbird behavior at\nAppalachian State University solidified her interest in avian research. After graduating\, she traveled the US\nand abroad to work on various conservation and research projects. Now\, Adrianna is thrilled to be back home\nin Southern Appalachia where she is a master’s student in Wildlife and Fish Biology at Clemson University.\nShe is studying the effects of Hurricane Helene disturbance on nesting birds in western North Carolina. Her\ngoal is to inform the US Forest Service on best management practices for birds in this new and dynamic\nlandscape. \nPresentation Description:\nAdrianna’s presentation will provide a peek into the world of banding birds\, birds as a tool for science\, and\nhow her work could help turn a natural disaster into a win for conservation. SUMMARY:Wings of Freedom 4th of July Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The aviary at Roan Mountain State Park currently houses two rehabilitated owls who are unable to be released into the wild due to their injuries. We plan to expand the current aviary to include plumbing and electricity to improve the lives of our current aviary residents and house more rehabilitated birds of prey. To make this dream a reality for the Birds of Prey Program\, we set a goal of $10\,000 to complete the project. \nTo support the park’s goal\, join us at the Park Amphitheater for a full day of events! The day kicks off with several free events before tickets are required for participation. \n– 9:00 AM – Bike decorating at the Camp Store (FREE) \n– 9:30 AM – Bicycle Parade through the Campground ending at the Park Amphitheater (FREE) \n– 10:00 AM – Birds of Prey Show at the Park Amphitheater (FREE) \n– 11:00 AM – Magic Show with Mister Mystery at the Park Amphitheater (FREE) \n– 12 – 5 PM – Live Music\, Games\, Kid’s Scavenger Hunt\, Activities\, Food Trucks\, and Inflatables at the Park Amphitheater \nLive Music from Adam Clouse & Eric Reaves\, The Acoustic Corner with Special Guests Kashif Khan & Rebekah Edwards\, Zach McNabb\, and Stemwinder \n$15 Ticket Purchase Required for Participation in Inflatables and select activities from 12-5PM. SUMMARY:Roan Mountain Spring Naturalists Rally
DESCRIPTION:This will be the 67th year that naturalists and those that love nature have been gathering at Roan Mountain for the Roan Mountain Spring Naturalists Rally. This spring’s rally is set to be one of the finest with evening speakers\, Ingrid Luffman and Lisa Benish\, lunchtime activities\, a lunchtime program by Cade Campbell\, a lunchtime slide show and a great variety of field trips over the entire weekend. All activities at the rally are family-friendly\, and there are a variety of difficulty levels. This rally\, and all rallies\, are sponsored by the Friends of Roan Mountain and would not be possible without many volunteers and the support of Roan Mountain State Park.\nMembers of the Friends of Roan Mountain are admitted to all weekend activities at no charge\, with the exception of meals. Registration without membership is detailed in the brochure. She has degrees in Mathematics\, Earth Sciences\, and a PhD in Geography from University of Tennessee. A transplant from Canada\, she has taught at ETSU for 28 years\, and is a founding member of the Boone Watershed Partnership\, a local non-profit that identifies and addresses water resources concerns in the Boone Watershed. Recently\, the partnership completed forest restoration work at Jacob’s Nature Park in Johnson City to eliminate hundreds of invasive plants and replace them with over 400 native plants; volunteers contributed over 800 hours to the project.\nProgram Description: \nIn September 2024\, Hurricane produced high winds and torrential rains in the NC headwaters of several TN streams\, leading to flooding that scoured channels and floodplains\, removed riparian forests\, and destroyed homes and sanitary infrastructure. When extreme weather events occur\, as a hydrologist and geoscientist\, I try to understand the nature and magnitude of the event by evaluating damage to critical infrastructure and by using data to estimate how often events of this magnitude might recur in our communities. This program describes work done by ETSU Geoscientists in the days and months following Hurricane Helene.\n\nSaturday Evening Program:\nDiscovering the Blue Ridge: Place-Based Nature Education at Blue Ridge Discovery Center\nby Lisa Benish\n \nLisa Benish is an environmental educator and the Executive Director of the Blue Ridge Discovery Center (BRDC) in southwest Virginia. With a passion for place-based learning and conservation\, she leads BRDC’s efforts to connect people of all ages to the natural world through hands-on science\, outdoor exploration\, and stewardship programming. Lisa works closely with educators\, naturalists\, and community partners to develop immersive programs that highlight the ecological richness of the Blue Ridge region\, including forests\, wetlands\, streams\, meadows\, and pollinator habitats. Her work focuses on fostering curiosity\, conservation ethics\,and access to meaningful nature experiences for rural and underserved communities. \nProgram Description:                                            \nThe Blue Ridge Discovery Center (BRDC) is a regional hub for environmental education and wildlife discovery in southwest Virginia. This presentation will introduce BRDC’s mission\, campus\, and core programs\, highlighting how its diverse landscapes—forests\, wetlands\, streams\, meadows\, and pollinator gardens—serve as living classrooms. SUMMARY:Roan Mountain Winter Naturalist's Rally
DESCRIPTION:Join Friends of Roan Mountain on Saturday\, February 21st at the Roan Mountain State Park Conference Center for a winter celebration of the Roan Highlands! Since 2007 the Winter Naturalists’ Rally has drawn hardy nature enthusiasts from far & wide to Roan Mountain on a Saturday close to Valentine’s Day. The 2026 Winter Rally continues this celebration of our natural world by providing expert speakers on topics concerning the environs of the Roan Highlands. SUMMARY:78th Annual Roan Mountain Rhododendron Festival
DESCRIPTION:June 1947 saw the first of the Rhododendron Festivals\, conceived and carried out by the Roan Mountain Citizens Club as a two-day celebration to memorialize and perpetuate the most gorgeous display of natural beauty on the North American continent.\nThis festival has continued uninterrupted for over sixty years. \nThe festival is held annually in June. Originally the festival was held at the top of Roan Mountain. \nIn recent years the festival is held in Roan Mountain State Park\, located at the foot of Roan Mountain and features handmade crafts\, food\, and a variety of traditional music\, plus an array of old-time folkway demonstrations. \n \nLocation: Roan Mountain State Park\, Hwy 143\, Roan Mountain\, Tennessee (Between Asheville\, NC\, and Johnson City\, TN on US HWY 19-E\, and only 40 miles from Boone/Blowing Rock\, NC\, and 20 miles from Banner Elk/Beech Mountain/Linville\, NC) Also\, the Appalachian Trail\, as well as an official Tennessee Scenic Drive\, run through our community. \nParking by donation to local civic group\, admission\, demonstrations\, and entertainment all day both days. Over 100 arts and crafts vendors. A variety of food available. Visit the world’s largest natural rhododendron gardens atop 6000-ft Roan Mountain. Hike the Appalachian Trail as it runs along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. Learn about our nation’s history as you relax beside cool streams. Camp or stay in a rustic cabin. Swim. Play tennis. \nCitizens Club will have Roan Mountain cookbooks\, auto tags\, and tee-shirts are available for purchase at the festival. See them at our tent under the big oak tree. We’ll also be selling ice-cold canned drinks and bottled water. All proceeds go to Roan Mountain commmunity projets at schools\, fire department\, etc. \nA Mini-Auction for Scholarships for Cloudland High School Graduates will be conducted between performances. Since 2007 the Winter\nNaturalists' Rally has drawn hardy nature enthusiasts from far & wide to Roan\nMountain on the Saturday closest to Valentine’s Day. The 2025 Winter Rally\ncontinues this celebration of our natural world by providing expert speakers on\ntopics concerning the environs of the Roan Highlands. Top naturalists volunteer their\ntime and energy to make the event both enjoyable and educational for people of all\nages.\nHighlights of the day include registration beginning at 9 am in the Roan Mountain\nState Park Conference Center\, located at 1011 TN-143\, Roan Mountain\, Tennessee.\nMembers of Friends of Roan Mountain are admitted at no charge. Non-member\nAdults are $10.00 for the day; children are free.\nPlease consider becoming a member of Friends of Roan Mountain. There are\ndifferent membership levels with an Individual adult membership costing $20.00 per\nyear providing free attendance to all 4 of our annual naturalist events & rallies.\nAll speakers\, activities\, and hikes will take place at\, or leave\, from the conference\ncenter. There will be 2 indoor speakers in the morning\, beginning at 9:30 am and\nending at 12:30 pm. (schedule below)\nLunch break will run from 12:30 pm – 1:15 pm. If you would like to reserve a pre-\npaid bag lunch from City Market\, you will need to register and pay in advance by\nvisiting www.friendsofroanmtn.org no later than Tuesday\, February 11 th .\nThere will be a choice of 3 afternoon hikes that will leave from the Roan Mountain\nState Park Conference Center at 1:15 pm and will last until no later than 4 pm. Pre- \nregistration for these activities is not required. \nSATURDAY MORNING PROGRAM (9:30 a.m.) \n Tristan Clark: “Winter Herpetology”\nTristan will speak on some of our winter active amphibians\, and include a short\nsection at the end about how the hurricane negatively affected southern Appalachian\nsalamanders\, particularly hellbenders and some of the endangered species in adjacent\nareas of North Carolina.\nSpeaker bio: Tristan Clark\, also known as the “Rugged Herpetologist\,” is a local herpetologist with\nexperience working with the Nashville Zoo\, Amphibian Foundation\, Bays Mountain Park and\nvarious other organizations across the Southeast on a variety of conservation projects. His primary\nfocus has been documenting the biodiversity of rare salamanders and other herpetofauna in the\nSouthern Appalachian Mountains and assisting with captive breeding efforts to aid in the recovery of\ncritically endangered reptile and amphibian species in the wild. \n Gerry Middleton – “Wildlife Surveys in Hampton Creek Cove\, Roan Mountain\nState Park and Rocky Fork State Park”\nGerry completed wildlife surveys in Hampton Creek Cove\, Roan Mountain State Park\nand Rocky Fork State Pard during the summer of 2024. He used trail cameras for\nextended durations to document the species. The Friends of Roan Mountain were able\nto support Gerry’s study thanks to the generous support of our members. \nSpeaker Bio: Gerry Middleton's life began in the small railroad town of Etowah\, Tennessee\, where\nhis curiosity for nature took root. After high school\, he pursued a degree in Geology at Tennessee\nTech\, leading to an early career in Maryville and then with the TVA in Chattanooga as a coal\ngeologist. As job dynamics shifted\, Gerry transitioned to the TDEC Division of Remediation in Oak\nRidge\, dedicating 26 years to environmental monitoring. A pivotal moment came when he was\ninspired by Dr. Merlin Tuttle's presentation on bats\, prompting him to earn a Master’s in Wildlife &\nFisheries Science from the University of Tennessee\, Knoxville. This new expertise allowed him to\nshift roles at TDEC\, focusing on mercury contamination studies in small mammals and bats. His\npassion for conservation extended to volunteer bat surveys for Tennessee State Parks and fern\nsurveys in the Smokies. The 2024 \nWinter Rally continues this celebration of our natural world by providing expert \nspeakers on topics concerning the environs of the Roan Highlands. Top naturalists \nvolunteer their time and energy to make the event both enjoyable and educational \nfor people of all ages. \nHighlights of the day include registration beginning at 9 am in the Roan Mountain \nState Park Conference Center\, located at 1011 TN-143\, Roan Mountain\, Tennessee. \nMembers of Friends of Roan Mountain are admitted at no charge. Non-member \nAdults are $10.00 for the day; children are free. \nPlease consider becoming a member of Friends of Roan Mountain. There are \ndifferent membership levels with an Individual adult membership costing $20.00 \nper year providing free attendance to all 4 of our annual naturalist events & rallies. \nAll speakers\, activities\, and hikes will take place at\, or leave\, from the conference \ncenter. There will be 3 indoor speakers in the morning\, beginning at 9:30 am and \nending at 12:30 pm. (schedule below) \nLunch break will run from 12:30 pm – 1:15 pm. Pre- \nregistration for these activities is not required. \n  \nSATURDAY MORNING PROGRAM (9:30 a.m.) \n¨ Dr. Trevor Chapman: “Northern Gray-Cheeked Salamanders in the Southern \nAppalachian Highlands” \nSouthern Appalachia is home to several endemic species of salamanders that thrive \nin high elevation habitats. In this talk\, Trevor will discuss one species\, the Northern \nGray-Cheeked salamander\, and the research that he has done with this species over \nthe last 6 years at various local state parks including Roan Mountain. \nSpeaker bio: Trevor is currently a biology lecturer at East Tennessee State \nUniversity\, and his research interests are in amphibian conservation. He is co- \nadvising several graduate students that are involved in research such as frog \npathogen detection\, salamander genetics and speciation\, and salamander behavior \nand stress. He is particularly interested in applying new techniques\, such as dermal \nswabbing for stress hormones\, in an ecological and conservation-oriented context. \n  \n¨ Becky Smucker “Mosses\, Liverworts\, and Hornworts in Roan Mountain State \nPark” \nBryophytes (mosses\, liverworts and hornworts) were recently surveyed by Becky \nSmucker in Roan Mountain State Park through a grant from the Friends of Roan \nMountain and support from Tennessee's Natural Heritage Program. \nSpeaker Bio: Becky is a field bryologist with experience in the Eastern US and \nhas completed surveys for the National Forest Service\, for State & National Parks\, \nenvironmental businesses and non-profits\, Natural Heritage Programs & private \nland. \n¨ Dr. Rebecca Fletcher “Appalachian Foodways: A Seasonal Approach to \nFarming and Wildcrafting” \nRebecca will discuss the historical foodways of the Southern Appalachian \nMountains\, including seasonal farming\, hunting\, food preservation and \nwildcrafting for edibles and medicines. \n  \nSpeaker bio: Rebecca Adkins Fletcher is an anthropologist at East Tennessee \nState University. She is Associate Professor in the Department of Appalachian \nStudies and Assistant Director of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services. \nRebecca teaches Appalachian Studies courses in health\, environment\, foodways\, \nparanormal Appalachia and dark tourism\, and community engagement. DESCRIPTION:Coming to a night sky near you! January 14th’s night sky is set to showcase Saturn’s closest approach to the moon of the year. With a partial moon\, the night sky will be dark enough to enjoy brilliant views of Saturn’s rings as well as the many deep sky objects and constellations that grace us with their presence in winter. Celebrate this spectacle with Roan Mountain State Park from 8-9PM on Sunday\, January 14th at the Cabin 21-30 parking lot. Stay warm by a bonfire with snacks and hot chocolate while park rangers guide you through the night sky. Binoculars and a telescope will be available to enjoy closer views of Saturn.\n\nWeather is typically cold in January with the possibility of bad weather. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for updates on weather and the status of the program as time nears. We also recommend bringing a comfy camp chair with blankets. Dress warm and see you under the stars!

With Tavia’s support\, Creasey Mahan Nature Preserve started\nKentucky’s first full-time outdoor preschool\, Thrive Forest School\, serving more than 350 students and\ncampers a year. During the pandemic\, Tavia created a Take a Walk with Tavia video series about plants\, which\nmay be viewed from Creasey Mahan’s web site or YouTube page. DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, February 12\, 2022 at 1:30 pm \nMeeting at the Roan Mountain State Park Conference Center \n  \nThe Annual Friends of Roan Mountain Winter Rally will be abbreviated this year due to Covid-19 concerns but will still offer great opportunities to learn about and explore the mountain!  \nThe Roan Mountain State Park Conference Center programs which usually take place in the morning will not be offered this year\, and no lunch will be served\, however the afternoon field trips WILL be available free of charge at 1:30 pm\, and there are three great choices.   \nParticipants will meet at the conference center parking lot at Roan Mountain State Park. Warm clothes and sturdy shoes are recommended.  \n\nWildlife Tracking and Animal Signs\n\n          Leader: Marty Silver\, Park Ranger at Warrior’s Path State Park \n          Visiting areas along the Doe River in Roan Mtn. State Park\, this moderately strenuous and kid friendly hike will be fun for all ages! \n    2. Winter Birding & their Survival Strategies \n         Leader: Larry McDaniel\, Birder and Naturalist  \n         Larry will take participants to look for birds in and around the park and discuss the various winter strategies they use. This walk will not be   strenuous\, and participants will need binoculars (there will be a few pairs available to borrow).  \n    3. Carter Railroad Museum. Dr.\nAlsop’s education includes B.S. degree\, Austin Peay State University with a double major in Biology & Fine Arts\,\nUniversity of Tennessee\, M.S. degree and Ph.D.\, University of Tennessee – Zoology w/ emphasis in ornithology\,\nwhere his major professor was James T. Tanner.\nDr Alsop has had many years of experience as an ornithologist\, with research\, field studies\, and birding expeditions\nall over the US and numerous countries. His “Life List” includes almost 5000 species seen worldwide. He is an avid\nfield biologist and naturalist\, lecturer and teacher\, traveler\, international natural history tour leader\, wildlife\nphotographer\, and author. He has published more than 100 articles and notes on birds in scientific journals and his\nwildlife photographs have appeared in many national publications and books. Dr. Alsop has written 18 books on\nbirds including Birds of the Smokies and All About Tennessee Birds\, Birds of North America and Birds of Canada.\nWhile at East Tennessee State University\, Dr. Alsop served in many capacities\, including President of the Faculty\nSenate\, and has received numerous awards. Dr Alsop is Founder & Director of Biological Sciences/ETSU\nEagleCam Project since 2015\, live-streaming the nesting lives of 2 pairs of local Bald Eagles globally.\nProgram Description:\nAn article published in Science in the fall of 2019 documented the long-held feeling by many ornithologists and\nbirders that North America was steadily losing birds of many species. Long-time birders often reflected that there\njust were not as many birds as there used to be. This report proved that they were right. This presentation will\nreview that study\, discuss the causes for avian decline and what we may be able to do to slow it\, or even reverse the\ntrend. Additionally\, we look at a local live-streaming project focused on nesting Bald Eagles initiated by the\nDepartment of Biological Sciences at ETSU and how it was achieved. \nSATURDAY EVENING PROGRAM:\n“The Singing Insects of Roan Mountain”\nCade Campbell is an undergraduate student studying Biology at East Tennessee State University as a Roan Scholar.\nCade has been attending these rallies since he was nine years old and now leads trips and served as a speaker at\nthese rallies. Cade has honed his skills doing research funded with a Coleopterists Society Youth Incentive Award\ngrant\, where he studied dung beetle biodiversity in high-elevation peat bogs\, and work as a field technician for the\n2nd Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas through Virginia Tech\, among other organizations with which he has volunteered. \nHe has also written articles for the Friends of Roan Mountain Newsletter\, Tennessee Conservationist\, and Tennes-\nSierran\, and worked for the Blue Ridge Discovery Center last summer as a naturalist/educator intern. He is also an \nEagle Scout\, and spends as much time as possible exploring the remaining wilderness of this region through wildlife\nphotography\, fishing\, kayaking\, etc. \nProgram Description:\nThe sounds of insects are always heard in the crisp\, cool fall evenings of a Southern Appalachian autumn. But who\nexactly is making each of these strange\, musical songs? DESCRIPTION:2021 Spring Roan Mountain Naturalists Rally  \nSaturday\, April 24\, 2021  \n  \nThroughout each year\, the Friends of Roan Mountain sponsor naturalist rallies during four weekends spanning the seasons.  The Spring Naturalists’ Rally takes place the last weekend in April; the Youth Rally (Xtreme Roan Adventures) is the last weekend in July; the Fall Rally is in September\, the weekend after Labor Day; and the Winter Rally falls on a Saturday in mid-February.  \nFriends of Roan Mountain is dedicated to fostering greater awareness and understanding of the natural\, historical\, and cultural significance of Roan Mountain. In addition to hosting naturalist rallies\, Friends of Roan also works with Roan Mountain State Park and the U.S. Forest Service on different projects throughout the year.  \n  \nThe Spring Naturalist’s Rally is just around the corner\, planned for Saturday\, April 24\, 2021.  Read on to learn about how we will offer an engaging day for the family in Roan Mountain!  \n  \nThe Spring Roan Mountain Naturalists Rally is modified this year due to the Covid-19 pandemic. DESCRIPTION:Saturday-Sunday | June 22 & 23\, 2019 | 10am-5pm \nJune 1947 saw the first of the Rhododendron Festivals\, conceived and carried out by the Roan Mountain Citizens Club as a two-day celebration to memorialize and perpetuate the most gorgeous display of natural beauty on the North American continent.\nThis festival has continued uninterrupted for over sixty years.\nThe festival is held the third weekend of June. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, May 11th\, Roan Mountain State Park will be partering with the Elizabethton Elks Lodge for our 2019 Junior Trout Tournament. Kids 6-14 years of age may enter to have a chance at catching “the big one.” Tagged rainbow and brown trout will be stocked prior to the event along the Doe River for scoring purposes.\nTournament registration begins at 8:00AM on May 11th at the Roan Mountain State Park Amphitheater. DESCRIPTION:The 61st Roan Mountain Spring Naturalists Rally to be held  \nFriday – Sunday April 26th – 28th  \n\nSponsored by The Friends of Roan Mountain\, the spring rally takes place at Roan Mountain State Park in Carter County\, TN.  \n  \nThe featured speakers are Jeremy Stout on Friday night and Scott Honeycutt on Saturday night. Jeremy\, manager of the Nature Center at Steele Creek Park in Bristol\, TN\, will be doing his presentation “Dynamic Roan: a prehistoric perspective on today’s ecology”. Scott teaches Literature at ETSU in Johnson City\, TN. His topic will be “Crossing the Hills – The Literature of the Appalachian Trail”. These presentations start at about 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday following the rally dinners at the Conference Center. \n\nRegister online at www.friendsofroanmountain.org or on-site at the rally. Meals are catered by City Market of Elizabethton\, TN. The deadline for meal reservations is Tuesday\, April 23rd. \n\nRoan Mountain is a very special place. Rising up to 6\,285 ft. in elevation and is one of the highest peaks in the eastern United States.  As a part of the Southern Appalachians\, it is located in northeastern Tennessee and northwestern North Carolina. Spruce/Fir forests can be found at the higher elevations which contain a number of rare and endemic species of flora and fauna. Another special feature of “The Roan” are the high mountain balds\, rare and mostly treeless areas have a unique variety of plants and animals. In the lower elevations Northern Hardwood Cove Forests can be found that have some of the richest species diversity throughout most of the temperate regions of the planet. \nActivities take place throughout the weekend. SUMMARY:Roan Mountain Weed Wrangle
DESCRIPTION:Noon – 4:00 PM Eastern\nRoan Mountain State Park is proud to be taking part in a state-wide effort\, the 2019 Weed Wrangle\, to rid of invasive exotic plants across the state and to restore native plants. On Saturday\, March 2nd from 12:00-4:00 PM\, we are requesting your assistance in a battle to keep our Hemlocks safe from the Hemlock Wooly Adelgids as well as the removal of invasive Japanese Knotweed. Volunteers will meet at the park headquarters to be briefed on the day’s plant battle. Following\, groups will either assist in treating healthy Eastern Hemlocks against the spread of Adlegids or they will be working with a stream-side group removing Japanese Knotweed. These two threats may change the beautiful mountain landscapes forever if left unchecked. It is only with your help that we can prevent the spread of these dangerous species. Volunteers are encouraged to bring layers of clothing for cold weather\, gloves\, and water. SUMMARY:Roan Mountain First Hike
DESCRIPTION:Roan Mountain is celebrating the New Year with a resolution to hike. Join Park Ranger Phil Hylen for a beautiful 1.5-mile morning trek up to Ravens Rock. Ravens Rock offers a beautiful winter overlook of the park and mountain landscape. Hikers will start and end their adventure at the Campground Picnic Shelter 3 across from the camper check-in station. There will also be a warm fire to greet participants along with hot chocolate and coffee on the front and tail end of the hike. This is a free event\, but we request that you sign up on this page by clicking the registration link to help us have a count of our participants. \nRavens Rock is 0.9 miles in distance with steep ascents and declines making this a moderate to strenuous difficulty hike. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes meant for rocky and rooty terrain. The 0.6 mile distance is added from the walk to and from the trail head. Be sure to dress in layers for the weather and bring water for the hike. A camera is recommended for the overlook views. Happy New Year!
