SUMMARY:61st Roan Mountain Spring Naturalists Rally
DESCRIPTION:The 61st Roan Mountain Spring Naturalists Rally to be held  \nFriday – Sunday April 26th – 28th  \n\nSponsored by The Friends of Roan Mountain\, the spring rally takes place at Roan Mountain State Park in Carter County\, TN.  \n  \nThe featured speakers are Jeremy Stout on Friday night and Scott Honeycutt on Saturday night. Jeremy\, manager of the Nature Center at Steele Creek Park in Bristol\, TN\, will be doing his presentation “Dynamic Roan: a prehistoric perspective on today’s ecology”. Scott teaches Literature at ETSU in Johnson City\, TN. His topic will be “Crossing the Hills – The Literature of the Appalachian Trail”. These presentations start at about 7:30 pm on Friday and Saturday following the rally dinners at the Conference Center. \n\nRegister online at www.friendsofroanmountain.org or on-site at the rally. Meals are catered by City Market of Elizabethton\, TN. The deadline for meal reservations is Tuesday\, April 23rd. \n\nRoan Mountain is a very special place. Rising up to 6\,285 ft. in elevation and is one of the highest peaks in the eastern United States.  As a part of the Southern Appalachians\, it is located in northeastern Tennessee and northwestern North Carolina. Spruce/Fir forests can be found at the higher elevations which contain a number of rare and endemic species of flora and fauna. Another special feature of “The Roan” are the high mountain balds\, rare and mostly treeless areas have a unique variety of plants and animals. In the lower elevations Northern Hardwood Cove Forests can be found that have some of the richest species diversity throughout most of the temperate regions of the planet. \nActivities take place throughout the weekend. SUMMARY:Roan Mountain Weed Wrangle
DESCRIPTION:Noon – 4:00 PM Eastern\nRoan Mountain State Park is proud to be taking part in a state-wide effort\, the 2019 Weed Wrangle\, to rid of invasive exotic plants across the state and to restore native plants. On Saturday\, March 2nd from 12:00-4:00 PM\, we are requesting your assistance in a battle to keep our Hemlocks safe from the Hemlock Wooly Adelgids as well as the removal of invasive Japanese Knotweed. Volunteers will meet at the park headquarters to be briefed on the day’s plant battle. Following\, groups will either assist in treating healthy Eastern Hemlocks against the spread of Adlegids or they will be working with a stream-side group removing Japanese Knotweed. These two threats may change the beautiful mountain landscapes forever if left unchecked. It is only with your help that we can prevent the spread of these dangerous species. Volunteers are encouraged to bring layers of clothing for cold weather\, gloves\, and water. Tyler will present the results from his recent field research\, which focused primarily on assessing the population status of the northern gray-cheeked salamander (Plethodon montanus) in several locations around Roan Mountain. \n\nRobert Johnson (Artist – Celo\, NC)\n\n“Painting North Carolina state parks” \nRobert will make a presentation on a three-year project he is currently working on. He is hiking and sketching in all 33 North Carolina state parks and developing paintings in his studio for a show at Blue Spiral Gallery in Asheville in the fall of 2020. \n\nDan Gibbs (Black Bear Program Leader\, Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency)\n\n“What do we do about all these bears? Black bears in Tennessee: Their history\, current status and future” \nToday black bears are recolonizing former range in Tennessee as well as much of the eastern United States. SUMMARY:Roan Mountain First Hike
DESCRIPTION:Roan Mountain is celebrating the New Year with a resolution to hike. Join Park Ranger Phil Hylen for a beautiful 1.5-mile morning trek up to Ravens Rock. Ravens Rock offers a beautiful winter overlook of the park and mountain landscape. Hikers will start and end their adventure at the Campground Picnic Shelter 3 across from the camper check-in station. There will also be a warm fire to greet participants along with hot chocolate and coffee on the front and tail end of the hike. This is a free event\, but we request that you sign up on this page by clicking the registration link to help us have a count of our participants. \nRavens Rock is 0.9 miles in distance with steep ascents and declines making this a moderate to strenuous difficulty hike. Be sure to wear good hiking shoes meant for rocky and rooty terrain. The 0.6 mile distance is added from the walk to and from the trail head. Be sure to dress in layers for the weather and bring water for the hike. A camera is recommended for the overlook views. Happy New Year!
