The Sabine Hill Social Society will present English\ncountry dancing demonstrations. Participate in making a Christmas craft project and stroll\nthrough the Winterfest Art Show exhibit by the Watauga Valley Art League.\nTake the opportunity to do some early Christmas Shopping in our book and gift shop and visit\nwith local crafters and makers for unique\, one-of-a-kind gifts. DESCRIPTION:Autumn is in full swing. As both the temperature and the leaves continue to fall\, we begin to\nthink of the many holiday festivities that wait in the coming days. Over two hundred years ago it\nwas quite the same for the early frontier settlers. On Saturday\, November 11 from 10:00 to 4:00\nand Sunday\, November 12 from 10:00 to 3:00 Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area will become\nthe scene of a Frontier Harvest Celebration as we enjoy a time of friendship\, thanksgiving\, and\nrecognition of our patriot ancestors.\nIn Colonial America\, before Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday\, each colony or\ncommunity observed days of thanksgiving usually after the harvest had been brought in or after a\nsignificant military victory. Join the Washington County Militia\, host living history organization\nat Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park\, for their monthly militia muster and a colonial “Harvest\nHome” as they celebrate the Overmountain Men’s victory at the battle of Kings Mountain!\nActivities throughout the weekend will include programs and demonstrations of 18th century\nfrontier life including open hearth cooking\, flintlock musket and rifle demonstrations\, natural\ndyeing\, music\, Revolutionary War era battle tactics\, and much more. The weekend will also\ninclude a special Veterans Day program on Saturday\, November 11th to honor the combatants at\nthe Battle of Kings Mountain and our current veterans and armed service members.\nAlso\, join members of the Overmountain Weavers Guild as they present the Fall Fibers Fair\ninside the park visitors center throughout the weekend. Visit with local spinners\, weavers\, and\nfiber artists to learn more about wool\, flax\, and other fiber arts. Also do some early Christmas\nshopping with fiber arts vendors who will be set up throughout the weekend as well.\nThis is a perfect opportunity for the entire family to visit one of Tennessee’s finest state parks\nand enjoy a day immersed in history and fun. But don’t\nbe afraid\, Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals isn’t haunted… or is it? Bring a chair\, sit a spell\,\nand join us for an evening of stories\, songs\, and tales that are sure to send a shiver down your\nspine and tickle your funny bone. On Thursday\, October 26 th at 7:30 pm\, the park will be alive\nwith tales of haints and happenings of days gone by. An annual event not to be missed\, Scary\nStories will be presented inside the looming palisade walls of Fort Watauga providing a unique\natmosphere for an evening of spooky tales geared toward the entire family. \nWe are excited to welcome five exceptional storytellers to the stage this year: Dr. C. Keith\nYoung\, Catherine Yael Serota\, Wallace Shealy\, and the Front Porch Storytellers – Mary Jane\nKennedy\, and Chad Bogart. Each of these talented tellers is sure to raise goosebumps on your\nskin and bring a smile to your face!\nDr. C. Keith Young\, Raconteur\, is delighted to have the opportunity to return to the Scary Stories\nat Fort Watauga. Having charmed audiences of all ages for more than three decades (since\ngraduating from the ETSU Reading and Story Arts program)\, Dr. Young has been a featured\nstoryteller/emcee at festival events such as Jonesborough Days\, the Virginia Highlands Festival\,\nthe Erwin Strawberry Festival\, the Stone Soup Festival in Woodruff\, South Carolina\, Roan\nMountain State Park/Miller Homestead Days\, Elizabethton&#39;s Covered Bridge Festival\, and many\,\nmany more. He is a favorite among programs that enjoy energetic\, rib-tickling\, family-friendly\nsongs and tales. \nCatherine Yael Serota is Southern-Appalachian born\, from Asheville NC. Her career in human\nservices lasted 42 years and took her from Greensboro NC across the state to Johnson City TN.\nShe developed an interest in storytelling five years ago as a result of a lifetime of reading\, a love\nof articulation and history\, and now time to pursue these in retirement. Catherine is a board\nmember of the Asheville Storytelling Circle\, the North Carolina Storytelling Guild\, and an\nalumna member of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild. \nWallace Shealy\, from Flag Pond\, TN has the distinction of being named the 2010 Bold Faced\nLiar Champion by the Storytelling Arts Center of the Southeast. Wallace is active with the\nJonesborough Storytellers Guild and has been involved with the National Storytelling Festival\nfor more than 30 years. Whether he’s recalling a tale from his childhood\, telling a story based on\nthe Good Book or spinning a yarn you will be delighted listening to him stretch the truth all out\nof proportion.Mary Jane Kennedy spent 30 years teaching in Orlando.  She has a background in music\, voice-\nover\, historical research\, and storytelling.  She is the co-founder of The Homespun Storytellers\nand The Overmountain Singers. Also\, as a co-founder of The Front Porch Storytellers\, she has\npresented storytelling and music programs at many schools\, civic functions\, senior homes\, and\norganizations throughout the Appalachian Highlands for nearly twenty years along with the\npopular Historic Ghost Walks of Elizabethton. \nChad Bogart descends from a long line of Appalachian storytellers. His telling is enhanced by a\nbackground in music and historical interpretation. He has been featured as a historic interpreter\nand character demonstrator at over fifty historic sites across the eastern US. Locally\, Chad has\nbeen a featured storyteller at the Mountain Makins Festival in Morristown\, TN\, the Bonnie Kate\nTheater in Elizabethton\, and the campfire series at both Roan Mountain State Park and Rock\nCreek Park in Erwin. He is also a co-founder of the Front Porch Storytellers. His interest in scary\nstories stemmed from ghost tales told by his grandmother and are a favorite among his listeners.\nThe program will be presented inside Fort Watauga so be sure to bring your own seat. Also\,\nmake sure to dress warmly as the nighttime air along the Watauga River can be chilly and damp.\nThis event is free of charge and is sure to be an exciting evening with family and friends! Although this is not a total eclipse\,\nthose in our area will still experience an eclipse magnitude of 54%. Join us at Sycamore Shoals State\nHistoric Park and participate in several activities geared around the eclipse as you enjoy one of nature’s\nmost spectacular wonders. \nJoin our interpretive staff to learn the difference between a total and an annular solar eclipse. Hear how\nthe 18 th century Native people and early settlers regarded eclipses and learn about Sycamore Shoals\nState Park’s unique connection with the moon. \nYou should never look at the sun without proper eye protection. ISO certified solar viewing glasses are\navailable in the park gift shop for only $2.95 each. There will be other ways in which you can safely view\nthe eclipse. For an up-close view you can take a peek through the telescope which will be set up on the\npark grounds. Also\, supplies will be provided to make a simple pinhole solar projector.\nAt Sycamore Shoals the eclipse will begin at 11:47 AM. The 243 rd anniversary of the\n“Gathering at Sycamore Shoals” will be celebrated with a memorial service and a ceremonial wreath laying. \nFall Knap-In at Fort Watauga\nSaturday\, September 9 10:00 am – 4:00 pm\nKnapping – with a “K”– has nothing to do with sleep! Knapping is the art of making stone tools\, and the Knap-\nIn at Fort Watauga is our celebration of Tennessee Archaeology Week. Watch skilled craftspeople make\narrowheads\, spear points and other early survival tools. There will also be demonstrations of bow and arrow\nand atlatl throughout the day.

DESCRIPTION:Cherokee Heritage Day \nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park will host the 3 rd Annual Cherokee Heritage Day on\nSaturday\, August 26 th from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. Sycamore Shoals is forever linked with the\nrich traditions and influence of the Native Cherokee. Join us for a day devoted to sharing\nCherokee history and culture through traditional arts and historical presentations. In addition to\nthe scheduled programs there will be demonstrations of traditional skills such as basketmaking\,\nfinger weaving\, beadwork\, woodcarving\, and much more. \nInside the park Visitor Center will be demonstrations of contemporary Cherokee crafts. Sharon\nMcCoy will demonstrate beadwork\, Ray McCoy will be doing woodcarving\, and Toni Tahquette\nwill be demonstrating finger weaving. \nOutside the Visitor Center\, we are hosting a variety of Cherokee craftspeople demonstrating\ntraditional arts. Make sure to visit inside the fort to see Ramona Lossie as she creates beautiful\nbaskets. Jimmy Harlan will be making and demonstrating the use of the blowgun. Outside the\nfort and under the trees will be Ernest Grant demonstrating wampum jewelry and bandolier bag\nmaking\, while Nancy Pheasant is carving shells. Francilia Littlejohn will be making moccasins\,\nand Allen Fugate will be doing silversmithing. \nAlso\, located outside the fort\, you can visit a circa 1828 Cherokee campsite featuring a wedge\ntent for sleeping and a lean-to kitchen area complete with period travel kitchen with wrought iron\nfire utensils and dining items. Visitors can experience campfire cooking and learn more about\nthis significant period in Cherokee history. \nAdmission prices are Adults $8.00\, ages 7 to 17 years $3.00\, free for ages 6 and under. Tickets\nwill be sold on site the day of the event. Concessions will be available for purchase.
