Knapping is the art of making stone tools\, and the Knap-\nIn at Fort Watauga is our celebration of Tennessee Archaeology Week. Watch skilled craftspeople make\narrowheads\, spear points and other early survival tools. There will also be demonstrations of bow and arrow\nand atlatl throughout the day.

DESCRIPTION:Cherokee Heritage Day \nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park will host the 3 rd Annual Cherokee Heritage Day on\nSaturday\, August 26 th from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm. Sycamore Shoals is forever linked with the\nrich traditions and influence of the Native Cherokee. Join us for a day devoted to sharing\nCherokee history and culture through traditional arts and historical presentations. In addition to\nthe scheduled programs there will be demonstrations of traditional skills such as basketmaking\,\nfinger weaving\, beadwork\, woodcarving\, and much more. \nInside the park Visitor Center will be demonstrations of contemporary Cherokee crafts. Sharon\nMcCoy will demonstrate beadwork\, Ray McCoy will be doing woodcarving\, and Toni Tahquette\nwill be demonstrating finger weaving. \nOutside the Visitor Center\, we are hosting a variety of Cherokee craftspeople demonstrating\ntraditional arts. Make sure to visit inside the fort to see Ramona Lossie as she creates beautiful\nbaskets. Jimmy Harlan will be making and demonstrating the use of the blowgun. Outside the\nfort and under the trees will be Ernest Grant demonstrating wampum jewelry and bandolier bag\nmaking\, while Nancy Pheasant is carving shells. Francilia Littlejohn will be making moccasins\,\nand Allen Fugate will be doing silversmithing. \nAlso\, located outside the fort\, you can visit a circa 1828 Cherokee campsite featuring a wedge\ntent for sleeping and a lean-to kitchen area complete with period travel kitchen with wrought iron\nfire utensils and dining items. Visitors can experience campfire cooking and learn more about\nthis significant period in Cherokee history. \nAdmission prices are Adults $8.00\, ages 7 to 17 years $3.00\, free for ages 6 and under. Tickets\nwill be sold on site the day of the event. Concessions will be available for purchase. In the summer of 1776 colonial leaders met in\nPhiladelphia to draft a document that would forever change the world. By today’s standards\ninformation traveled slowly in the 18 th century. As our guests to Fort Watauga\, you too can be\npart of the excitement as news of American independence finally reaches the colonial frontier.\nWhat did the colonists think about a new nation? Walk among historical characters and hear their\nvaried reactions to the Declaration\, from fear of war to the hope of a brighter future. \nThe celebration takes place on Saturday\, July 22 nd as members of the Washington County\nRegiment of North Carolina Militia\, host living history organization at Sycamore Shoals State\nHistoric Park\, will be garrisoned at Fort Watauga. The militia muster will include a myriad of\nactivities allowing guests the opportunity to step back in time and experience daily life on the\ncolonial frontier in 1776. The highlight of the day will be a special reading of the Declaration of\nIndependence given inside Fort Watauga at 1:00 in the afternoon. Ongoing activities will include\ncolonial games\, Revolutionary War soldiers display\, life at Fort Watauga\, and much more. DESCRIPTION:The cast of Liberty! the Saga of Sycamore Shoals invites you to join them for their 44th season\nof the Official Outdoor Drama of the State of Tennessee. Each year\, the Fort Watauga\namphitheater comes to life with the sights and sounds of the late 18 th century on the colonial\nfrontier. \nNationally significant events that helped to shape the future of our nation before\, during\, and\nafter the American Revolution are presented in an engaging\, exciting\, and entertaining fashion.\nThe Watauga Association\, formed in 1772\, was widely recognized as the first continental\ngovernment that was “free and independent” of the British Crown\, designed to provide for law\nand order and the right of every free man to vote. In 1774\, Virginia Governor Lord Dunmore\ncalled it a “dangerous example” to form a government “distinct from and independent of his\nmajesty’s authority.” Later\, the area was annexed by North Carolina and became known as the\nWashington District\, named in honor of General George Washington\, who was leading the fight\nfor American Independence at the time. \nIn 1775\, The Treaty of Sycamore Shoals took place at the Watauga “Old Fields” where Judge\nRichard Henderson and other land speculators purchased 20 million acres of land from the\nCherokee. This negotiation sparked a series of Cherokee attacks on the pioneers of the\nWatauga and surrounding settlements a year later. \nLiberty! is set in front of the full-scale replica of Fort Watauga\, which was used to defend the\nsettlement against attacks from a faction of the Cherokee\, led by Chief Dragging Canoe\, who\nopposed the sale. Ultimately\, the settlement was successful in staving off the attack and siege\nof the fort. \nSycamore Shoals also served as the gathering place for the Overmountain Men\, who were an\nessential part of a broader militia that defeated Major Patrick Ferguson and his British force at\nthe Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. That event is often noted as a major turning point for the\nAmerican Revolution. \nLiberty! tells the stories of these important days of American history as well as demonstrating\nthe life of pioneers in a frontier settlement. Moreover\, it gives faces to the names we see on\nmany of our street signs and other local area designations. For example\, we meet John Sevier\,\nwho went on to become the first Governor of Tennessee. We are also introduced to John\nCarter\, and his son Landon\, both of whom are reflected in the full name of the Carter Mansion\,\nthe oldest frame house in the state. It’s preserved by Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park and\nFriends of Sycamore Shoals. \nThe amazing strength and skills of the local pioneer women are far from neglected in the\ndrama. Mary Patton\, who learned the art of manufacturing gun powder from her father\,\nprovided the Overmountain Men with a minimum of 500 pounds of gunpowder for their foray\ninto North Carolina in search of British Major Patrick Ferguson. \nWe also encounter Catherine “Bonnie Kate” Sherrill\, a lively lass who was caught outside the\nfort during the siege attack\, and was rescued by Sevier\, whom she later married. While\nTiptonville was the original name of Elizabethton\, as part of the State of Franklin\, it was later\nrenamed for Landon's wife\, Elizabeth MacLin Carter\, who also appears in the drama.\nThis is only a partial list of fascinating local contributors to regional and national history\, and\nputting the play on is quite an undertaking. It features professional lighting and sound\, a well-\nmaintained amphitheater\, as well as a cast\, crew\, and production team of nearly 100 local\nactors in speaking and extra roles. \nLiberty runs weekends in June beginning Fridays and Saturdays – June 2 & 3 and June 9 & 10;\nThursdays\, Fridays\, & Saturdays\, June 15\, 16\, & 17 and 22\, 23\, & 24 in the Fort Watauga\nAmphitheater at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton\, TN. \nGeneral admission tickets range from Free for Children 5 and under; to $6.00 for Students 6 to\n17 years; $12.00 for Seniors 55 and up; and $16.00 for Adults. We want to embrace this cultural change\nand show you how you can better use technology on a day-to-day bases in nature. Using tools such as GPS locating\, plant\nidentification\, and other easily accessible resources and apps\, we will show you how to enhance your experience rather\nthan take away from it. Join Ranger Cory Franklin on Earth Day for a walk around the park to better understand the tools\nyou carry with you daily. The program will meet and begin at the picnic area beside the visitor center.
