SUMMARY:Overmountain Militia Muster
DESCRIPTION:The year was 1780\, and the tide of the American Revolution was turning against the patriot cause. The British gained new allies in the divided South and won victory after victory in a bloody civil war. Charleston had fallen to the British\, American forces had crumbled at the battle of Camden\, and things were looking very bleak for the cause of independence. Then the impossible occurred! Frontiersmen west of the blue ridge mountains began a long march\, gathering an army along the way from the highlands of Virginia to the hills of South Carolina. At a place called King’s Mountain\, they destroyed British forces and opened the way for the final American victory at Yorktown. \nThe route they took from Virginia to South Carolina\, we now know as the Overmountain Victory National Historic Trail. Come celebrate with us as we re-live the muster of the Overmountain Men\, which occurred at Sycamore Shoals over two hundred years ago. \nJoin us at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park the weekend of Saturday and Sunday\, September 24th & 25th for the Overmountain Militia Muster. This weekend will be full of events centering around the story of the Overmountain Men and their historic gathering at Sycamore Shoals. From 10:00 am until 4:00 pm each day the Overmountain Victory Trail Association and the Washington County\, NC Militia will present 18th century demonstrations and activities in and around Fort Watauga. Discover the vital role Sycamore Shoals played in the early frontier community\, and how its significance would impact our nation’s history. Re-enactors in period clothing will be on hand throughout the weekend to share stories and demonstrations of that exciting and tumultuous time. \nAt 2:00 pm on Sunday\, September 25ththe Overmountain Victory Trail Association will recreate the historic 1780 river crossing when Colonel William Campbell and 400 mounted militiamen from present day Abingdon\, VA crossed the Watauga River at Sycamore Shoals to join Colonels Isaac Shelby and John Sevier in response to a threat from British Major Patrick Ferguson. For the past 47 years Members of the OVTA have recreated this historic occurrence since 1975\, following the same route and timetable as their legendary forebears from Abingdon\, VA to Kings Mountain\, SC. \nWhile enjoying the activities of the weekend\, be sure to visit the award-winning museum and interpretive center\, and don’t miss the park’s interpretive film “Sycamore Shoals – Story of the American Spirit”. Also visit the Park’s Book and Gift Shop to take home a special souvenir or a gift for the history buff or avid reader in your family. This fun filled and action-packed event is sure to entertain and educate all ages. The event is free of charge so bring the entire family and relive some of the most crucial days of the American Revolution.

SUMMARY:43rd Annual Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore Shoals
DESCRIPTION:The cast of Liberty! the Saga of Sycamore Shoals invites you to join them for their 43rd season\nof the Official Outdoor Drama of the State of Tennessee. Each year\, the Fort Watauga\namphitheater comes to life with the sights and sounds of the late 18 th century on the colonial\nfrontier. \nNationally significant events that helped to shape the future of our nation before\, during\, and\nafter the American Revolution are presented in an engaging\, exciting\, and entertaining fashion.\nThe Watauga Association\, formed in 1772\, was widely recognized as the first continental\ngovernment that was “free and independent” of the British Crown\, designed to provide for law\nand order and the right of every free man to vote. In 1774\, Virginia Governor Lord Dunmore\ncalled it a “dangerous example” to form a government “distinct from and independent of his\nmajesty’s authority.” Later\, the area was annexed by North Carolina and became known as the\nWashington District\, named in honor of General George Washington\, who was leading the fight\nfor American Independence at the time. \nIn 1775\, The Treaty of Sycamore Shoals took place at the Watauga “Old Fields” where Judge\nRichard Henderson and other land speculators purchased 20 million acres of land from the\nCherokee. This negotiation sparked a series of Cherokee attacks on the pioneers of the\nWatauga and surrounding settlements a year later. \nLiberty! is set in front of the full-scale replica of Fort Watauga\, which was used to defend the\nsettlement against attacks from a faction of the Cherokee\, led by Chief Dragging Canoe\, who\nopposed the sale. Ultimately\, the settlement was successful in staving off the attack and siege\nof the fort. \nSycamore Shoals also served as the gathering place for the Overmountain Men\, who were an\nessential part of a broader militia that defeated Major Patrick Ferguson and his British force at\nthe Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. That event is often noted as a major turning point for the\nAmerican Revolution. \nLiberty! tells the stories of these important days of American history as well as demonstrating\nthe life of pioneers in a frontier settlement. Moreover\, it gives faces to the names we see on\nmany of our street signs and other local area designations. For example\, we meet John Sevier\,\nwho went on to become the first Governor of Tennessee. We are also introduced to John\nCarter\, and his son Landon\, both of whom are reflected in the full name of the Carter Mansion\,\nthe oldest frame house in the state. It’s preserved by Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park and\nFriends of Sycamore Shoals. \nThe amazing strength and skills of the local pioneer women are far from neglected in the\ndrama. Mary Patton\, who learned the art of manufacturing gun powder from her father\,\nprovided the Overmountain Men with a minimum of 500 pounds of gunpowder for their foray\ninto North Carolina in search of British Major Patrick Ferguson. \nWe also encounter Catherine “Bonnie Kate” Sherrill\, a lively lass who was caught outside the\nfort during the siege attack\, and was rescued by Sevier\, whom she later married. While\nTiptonville was the original name of Elizabethton\, as part of the State of Franklin\, it was later\nrenamed for Landon's wife\, Elizabeth MacLin Carter\, who also appears in the drama.\nThis is only a partial list of fascinating local contributors to regional and national history\, and\nputting the play on is quite an undertaking. It features professional lighting and sound\, a well-\nmaintained amphitheater\, as well as a cast\, crew\, and production team of nearly 100 local\nactors in speaking and extra roles. \nLiberty runs weekends in June beginning Fridays and Saturdays – June 3 & 4 and June 10 & 11;\nThursdays\, Fridays\, & Saturdays\, June 16\, 17\, & 18 and 23\, 24\, & 25 in the Fort Watauga\nAmphitheater at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton\, TN. \nGeneral admission tickets range from Free for Children 5 and under; to $8.00 for Students 6 to\n17 years; $14.00 for Seniors 55 and up; and $19.00 for Adults. Members of Friends of Sycamore\nShoals\, Veterans\, and First Responders may attend the drama any night for a reduced\nadult/senior admission price of $10.00. \nOnline Ticket Sales- www.TheLibertyDrama.com or you can purchase tickets at the door until all\nseats are sold. \nThe production of Liberty! is supported by Friends of Sycamore Shoals each season. Please\nsupport this vital organization and become a member to help support the Liberty drama\, as well\nas a host of other educational park activities that take place throughout the year.\nDon’t be one of the many who say “I’ve heard about it\, but never gone.” And\, if you’ve seen it\,\nyou’re most welcome to come again. Our script is always changing and is sure to keep you on\nthe edge of your seats! Support your local history educators and preservationists; come learn \nabout our history in a fun and entertaining context\, and spread the word. We’ll see you at the\nOld Fields! \nAdditional Information:\nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park\n1651 W.
