SUMMARY:43rd Annual Liberty! The Saga of Sycamore Shoals
DESCRIPTION:The cast of Liberty! the Saga of Sycamore Shoals invites you to join them for their 43rd season\nof the Official Outdoor Drama of the State of Tennessee. Each year\, the Fort Watauga\namphitheater comes to life with the sights and sounds of the late 18 th century on the colonial\nfrontier. \nNationally significant events that helped to shape the future of our nation before\, during\, and\nafter the American Revolution are presented in an engaging\, exciting\, and entertaining fashion.\nThe Watauga Association\, formed in 1772\, was widely recognized as the first continental\ngovernment that was “free and independent” of the British Crown\, designed to provide for law\nand order and the right of every free man to vote. In 1774\, Virginia Governor Lord Dunmore\ncalled it a “dangerous example” to form a government “distinct from and independent of his\nmajesty’s authority.” Later\, the area was annexed by North Carolina and became known as the\nWashington District\, named in honor of General George Washington\, who was leading the fight\nfor American Independence at the time. \nIn 1775\, The Treaty of Sycamore Shoals took place at the Watauga “Old Fields” where Judge\nRichard Henderson and other land speculators purchased 20 million acres of land from the\nCherokee. This negotiation sparked a series of Cherokee attacks on the pioneers of the\nWatauga and surrounding settlements a year later. \nLiberty! is set in front of the full-scale replica of Fort Watauga\, which was used to defend the\nsettlement against attacks from a faction of the Cherokee\, led by Chief Dragging Canoe\, who\nopposed the sale. Ultimately\, the settlement was successful in staving off the attack and siege\nof the fort. \nSycamore Shoals also served as the gathering place for the Overmountain Men\, who were an\nessential part of a broader militia that defeated Major Patrick Ferguson and his British force at\nthe Battle of Kings Mountain in 1780. That event is often noted as a major turning point for the\nAmerican Revolution. \nLiberty! tells the stories of these important days of American history as well as demonstrating\nthe life of pioneers in a frontier settlement. Moreover\, it gives faces to the names we see on\nmany of our street signs and other local area designations. For example\, we meet John Sevier\,\nwho went on to become the first Governor of Tennessee. We are also introduced to John\nCarter\, and his son Landon\, both of whom are reflected in the full name of the Carter Mansion\,\nthe oldest frame house in the state. It’s preserved by Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park and\nFriends of Sycamore Shoals. \nThe amazing strength and skills of the local pioneer women are far from neglected in the\ndrama. Mary Patton\, who learned the art of manufacturing gun powder from her father\,\nprovided the Overmountain Men with a minimum of 500 pounds of gunpowder for their foray\ninto North Carolina in search of British Major Patrick Ferguson. \nWe also encounter Catherine “Bonnie Kate” Sherrill\, a lively lass who was caught outside the\nfort during the siege attack\, and was rescued by Sevier\, whom she later married. While\nTiptonville was the original name of Elizabethton\, as part of the State of Franklin\, it was later\nrenamed for Landon's wife\, Elizabeth MacLin Carter\, who also appears in the drama.\nThis is only a partial list of fascinating local contributors to regional and national history\, and\nputting the play on is quite an undertaking. It features professional lighting and sound\, a well-\nmaintained amphitheater\, as well as a cast\, crew\, and production team of nearly 100 local\nactors in speaking and extra roles. \nLiberty runs weekends in June beginning Fridays and Saturdays – June 3 & 4 and June 10 & 11;\nThursdays\, Fridays\, & Saturdays\, June 16\, 17\, & 18 and 23\, 24\, & 25 in the Fort Watauga\nAmphitheater at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton\, TN. \nGeneral admission tickets range from Free for Children 5 and under; to $8.00 for Students 6 to\n17 years; $14.00 for Seniors 55 and up; and $19.00 for Adults. Members of Friends of Sycamore\nShoals\, Veterans\, and First Responders may attend the drama any night for a reduced\nadult/senior admission price of $10.00. \nOnline Ticket Sales- www.TheLibertyDrama.com or you can purchase tickets at the door until all\nseats are sold. \nThe production of Liberty! is supported by Friends of Sycamore Shoals each season. Please\nsupport this vital organization and become a member to help support the Liberty drama\, as well\nas a host of other educational park activities that take place throughout the year.\nDon’t be one of the many who say “I’ve heard about it\, but never gone.” And\, if you’ve seen it\,\nyou’re most welcome to come again. Our script is always changing and is sure to keep you on\nthe edge of your seats! Support your local history educators and preservationists; come learn \nabout our history in a fun and entertaining context\, and spread the word. We’ll see you at the\nOld Fields! \nAdditional Information:\nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park\n1651 W. SUMMARY:Watauga Association 250th Anniversary Celebration
DESCRIPTION:The Watauga Association\nA 250 th Anniversary Celebration\nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park\nSaturday\, April 9 th 10:00 am – 4:00 pm \nThe United States of America may have been born on July 4 th \, 1776\, but the idea of American\nself-government began a full four years earlier in 1772\, and it happened in what is now\nElizabethton\, Tennessee. Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park will celebrate the birth of\nAmerican democracy with a special event on Saturday\, April 9 th commemorating the 250 th\nanniversary of the Watauga Association. \nIn 1763 a royal proclamation had forbidden settlement west of the Appalachian Mountains. As\nBritish rule became increasingly oppressive in the colonies\, people began to move west across\nthe Blue Ridge. Being outside the authority of the 13 colonies\, the settlers in the Watauga River\nvalley saw the need for law and order and joined together to create a compact to “govern and\ndirect for the common good of the people”. In the spring of 1772\, meeting under a large\nsycamore tree by the Doe River in what is now Elizabethton\, TN\, settlement leaders drafted\narticles of governance for the Watauga Association. They negotiated a land lease\, and later a\npurchase\, with the Cherokee\, formed a court and a militia\, and organized the defense of the\nsettlement in 1776. \nThe Watauga Association existed as a body of democratic self-rule for 5 years before being\nannexed by North Carolina in 1777 as Washington County. Lord Dunmore\, the Royal Governor\nof Virginia\, said\, “It at least sets a dangerous example to the people of America of forming\ngovernments distinct from and independent of His Majesty’s authority.” In later years historians\nwould call the Watauga Association the first free and independent community on the continent. It\nproved that Americans could govern themselves\, and four years later the 13 colonies would\ndeclare independence from Great Britain. \nIf you would like to join in the celebration of this historic occasion\, come to Sycamore Shoals\nState Historic Park in Elizabethton\, TN on Saturday\, April 9 th . The commemoration will begin at\n10:00 am in the Fort Watauga Amphitheater with a special ceremony which will include a\nwreath laying\, a proclamation by the Carter County Commission\, and a presentation of the\nWatauga Association scene from Tennessee’s official outdoor drama\, Liberty! The Saga of\nSycamore Shoals. \nFollowing the morning program guests are invited to visit the many displays and demonstration\nof 18 th century life that will be presented throughout the day in and around the replica of Fort\nWatauga. Presentations will include 18 th century weaponry\, uniforms and clothing of the period\,\nsoldier’s equipment\, quill pen writing\, colonial era music\, women’s roles on the frontier\,\nflintlock musket and rifle demonstrations\, militia drill\, and much more. The event will close at\n4:00 pm. \nAlso\, as part of the celebration\, commemorative tours of the historic Carter Mansion will be\noffered. SUMMARY:Old Christmas at Fort Watauga
DESCRIPTION:Christmas isn’t over yet! Come to Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park and see how our colonial ancestors celebrated a holiday called “Old Christmas”. In Colonial America\, Christmas was celebrated as a twelve day holiday with many traditions and customs. Does The Twelve Days of Christmas sound familiar? These twelve days of feasting\, and merrymaking ended on January 5th or “Twelfth Night” with a grand celebration. \nOn Saturday\, January 8th from 10am-3pm and Sunday\, January 5th from \n10am-3pm the Washington County Militia will hold their annual Old Christmas Celebration. As you walk through the gates of Fort Watauga you will travel back in time to an 18th century Old Christmas “Jollification”. Each cabin in the fort will be the setting of Christmas\, New Year\, and 12th Night traditions as celebrated by the settlers of different cultures on the colonial frontier. Many of our modern Christmas customs are taken from centuries old practices such as English Christmas Guns\, the Irish Holly Wreath\, the German Tannenbaum\, Scottish First Footing\, and the Dutch Sinterklaas. See how our Christmas practices of today are steeped in these old-world traditions. \nGet the most out of the Holiday Season and visit Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park for a fun\, entertaining\, and educational family outing. Arrive ready to be filled with the spirit of Christmas. It’s an event that is sure to become a tradition with your family year after year. \nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park is located at 1651 W. Elk Avenue in Elizabethton\, TN. For more information contact the Park at 423-543-5808 or visit our websites at www.sycamoreshoalstn.wordpress.com or https://tnstateparks.com/parks/sycamore-shoals.

SUMMARY:Colonial Candle Dipping
DESCRIPTION:Colonial Candle Dipping\nWednesday\, November 17 10:00 am – 2:00 pm\nLighting is something we take so much for granted today. In the 18 th century\, having light after sundown meant\nhaving a good supply of candles\, and every colonial homestead would have been involved in the common\nhousehold task of candle making. Drop in anytime between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm and join museum curator\nChad Bogart at Fort Watauga to learn about candles and other sources of light in the 18 th century such as fat\nlamps\, betty lamps\, crusies\, and sparking lamps. For a small cash fee\, you can make your very own hand dipped\nbeeswax candle. It’s sure to be an “illuminating” experience!\n*** Be advised that hot wax is used in this program. Please wear appropriate clothing. No unaccompanied\nminors. No pets. ***

SUMMARY:Colonial Harvest Celebration & Fall Fibers Show
DESCRIPTION:Autumn Heritage Celebration \nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park \nNovember 13 & 14\, 2021 \n \nColonial Harvest Celebration & Fall Fibers Show \n\nAutumn is in full swing. As both the temperature and the leaves continue to fall\, we begin to think of the many holiday festivities that wait in the coming days. Over two hundred years ago it was quite the same for the early frontier settlers. On Saturday\, November 13 from 10:00 to 4:00 and Sunday\, November 14 from 10:00 to 3:00 Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area will become the scene of a Frontier Harvest Celebration as we enjoy a time of friendship\, thanksgiving\, and recognition of our patriot ancestors. \n In Colonial America\, before Thanksgiving was declared a national holiday\, each colony or community observed days of thanksgiving usually after the harvest had been brought in or after a significant military victory. Join the Washington County Militia\, host living history organization at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Area\, for their monthly militia muster and a colonial “Harvest Home” as they celebrate the Overmountain Men’s victory at the battle of Kings Mountain! \n Activities throughout the weekend will include programs and demonstrations of 18th century frontier life including open hearth cooking\, flintlock musket and rifle demonstrations\, music\, Revolutionary War era battle tactics\, and much more. The weekend will also include a special Veterans Day program on Saturday\, November 13th to honor the combatants at the Battle of Kings Mountain and our current veterans and armed service members. \n In the Visitors Center\, visit fiber artists from the Overmountain Weaver’s Guild as they demonstrate spinning\, weaving\, and all things fibers. The building will be alive with activity as vendors offer a selection of holiday gifts. Whether you are a seasoned fiber artist or would like to learn more\, this educational event is a must for all ages! \n This is a perfect opportunity for the entire family to visit one of Tennessee’s finest state parks and enjoy a day immersed in history and fun. Admission is free so don’t miss this unique event showcasing Tennessee’s rich heritage. During your time at the park be sure to experience the interpretive exhibits as well as our book and gift shop to make your visit complete. \n\nSycamore Shoals State Historic Park is located at 1651 W. Elk Ave. Elizabethton\, TN 37643. \n\nFor additional information about this and other exciting events at the park please call 423-543-5808 or visit us on the web at www.sycamoreshoalstn.wordpress.com and tnstateparks.com/parks/sycamore-shoals. \n\nWe look forward to seeing you at Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park\, where you too can “Share in the glorious cause of Liberty”!

SUMMARY:Scary Stories At Lake Watauga
DESCRIPTION:Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park \npresents \nScary Stories at Fort Watauga \n\nThursday\, October 28 at 7:30 pm \n \nStrange things happen around All Hallows Eve\, especially at an old fort by the river. But don’t be afraid\, Fort Watauga at Sycamore Shoals isn’t haunted… or is it? Join us for an evening of stories\, songs\, and tales that are sure to send a shiver down your spine and tickle your funny bone. On Thursday\, October 28th at 7:30 pm\, the park will be alive with tales of haints and happenings of days gone by. An annual event not to be missed\, Scary Stories will be presented in the amphitheater with Fort Watauga looming in the background providing a unique atmosphere for an evening of spooky tales geared toward the entire family. \n \nWe are excited to welcome five exceptional storytellers to the stage this year: Dr. C. Keith Young\, Catherine Yael Serota\, Wallace Shealy\, and the Front Porch Storytellers – Mary Jane Kennedy\, and Chad Bogart. Each of these talented tellers is sure to raise goosebumps on your skin and bring a smile to your face! \n \nDr. C. Keith Young\, Raconteur\, is delighted to have the opportunity to return to the Scary Stories at Fort Watauga. Having charmed audiences of all ages for more than three decades (since graduating from the ETSU Reading and Story Arts program)\, Dr. Young has been a featured storyteller/emcee at festival events such as Jonesborough Days\, the Virginia Highlands Festival\, the Erwin Strawberry Festival\, the Stone Soup Festival in Woodruff\, South Carolina\, Roan Mountain State Park/Miller Homestead Days\, Elizabethton’s Covered Bridge Festival\, and many\, many more. He is a favorite among programs that enjoy energetic\, rib-tickling\, family-friendly songs and tales. \n \n \nCatherine Yael Serota is Southern-Appalachian born\, from Asheville NC. Her career in human services lasted 42 years and took her from Greensboro NC across the state to Johnson City TN. She developed an interest in storytelling four years ago as a result of a lifetime of reading\, a love of articulation and history\, and now time to pursue these in retirement. Catherine is a board member of the Asheville Storytelling Circle\, the North Carolina Storytelling Guild\, and an alumna member of the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild. She has told stories all over the region and is working on a book of stories for publication in Spring 2022. \n \nWallace Shealy\, from Flag Pond\, TN has the distinction of being named the 2010 Bold Faced Liar Champion by the Storytelling Arts Center of the Southeast. Wallace is active with the Jonesborough Storytellers Guild and has been involved with the National Storytelling Festival for more than 30 years. Whether he’s recalling a tale from his childhood\, telling a story based on the Good Book or spinning a yarn you will be delighted listening to him stretch the truth all out of proportion. \n \nMary Jane Kennedy spent 30 years teaching in Orlando. She has a background in music\, voice-over\, historical research\, and storytelling. She is the co-founder of The Homespun Storytellers and The Overmountain Singers. Also\, as a co-founder of The Front Porch Storytellers\, she has presented storytelling and music programs at many schools\, civic functions\, senior homes\, and organizations throughout the Appalachian Highlands for nearly twenty years along with the popular Historic Ghost Walks of Elizabethton. \n \nChad Bogart descends from a long line of Appalachian storytellers. His telling is enhanced by a background in music and historical interpretation. He has been featured as a historic interpreter and character demonstrator at over fifty historic sites across the eastern US. Locally\, Chad has been a featured storyteller at the Mountain Makins Festival in Morristown\, TN\, the Bonnie Kate Theater in Elizabethton\, and the campfire series at both Roan Mountain State Park and Rock Creek Park in Erwin. He is also a co-founder of the Front Porch Storytellers. His interest in scary stories stemmed from ghost tales told by his grandmother and are a favorite among his listeners. \n \nThe program will be presented in the Fort Watauga Amphitheater which offers bench style seating and the opportunity to socially distance between family groups. Make sure to dress warmly as the nighttime air along the Watauga river can be chilly and damp. This event is free of charge and is sure to be an exciting evening with family and friends!
