SUMMARY:Sorghum Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Sorghum Festival will allow visitors to have the opportunity to observe sorghum cane being processed into molasses using a mule-powered mill. During the morning hours\, Maggie the mule will be out turning the cast iron rollers squeezing out the delectable juices to be boiled down into molasses. Just to watch Maggie work is worth a visit to the site! Come early as the sorghum crew will be crushing the sorghum cane and boiling the sweet juices throughout the morning and into the early afternoon hours.\nThe sorghum breakfast from 8:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. will feature biscuits with gravy or sorghum\, sausage\, bacon\, eggs\, oatmeal\, grits\, and drinks. Here is the chance to try sorghum molasses on a biscuit! Visitors can also enjoy touring the historic structures of the property that will take you back to the 1800s. Local bluegrass and folk music will be played within the nineteenth century barn throughout the day. The historic cave will be open for everybody of all ages to explore and find their inner spelunker. Local food trucks will be on site for visitors to enjoy a picnic lunch. There will also be several local vendors selling homemade crafts.\nAdmission is $10 for adults and $5 for children with breakfast. Without breakfast admission is $8 for adults and $4 for children. SUMMARY:Summers Past History Program
DESCRIPTION:Participants ages 6-14 can learn about their local history through historic-based crafts\, games\, music\, storytelling\, & nature with this immersive summer program for kids. The first week will center around the site’s Native American history\, the second week will focus on the Revolutionary War and Colonel John Tipton\, the third week will center on the Civil War and Landon Carter Haynes\, and the fourth week will cover the Simerly family of the early 1900s. Each week is limited to 25 participants.\nEach week\, all campers will have the chance to play various games and work on various craft-based activities that relate to the week’s historic time period. Campers will also get hands-on experience with original and replica artifacts. The ever-popular “Carter’s Raid\,” or capture the flag\, takes place each week\, along with a watermelon hunt that will challenge the campers to work as a team to search using various clues about the site’s historic structures. In addition\, a historical drama performed by the campers will be presented to parents and relatives on the last day of camp.\nAdmission is $150 per child for nonmembers and $125 per child for Tipton-Haynes members. DESCRIPTION:The Department of East Tennessee (DET) will be invading Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site on Saturday\, March 28. Have you ever wondered what camp life was like during the Civil War? Come and learn as reenactors from the DET camp\, drill\, march\, and conduct weapons demonstrations. Visitors will be able to study how soldiers lived in camp\, examine different types of uniforms\, watch how soldiers drilled\, hear the numerous commands of the officers\, see the various weapons carried during the war\, and so much more. Gates will be open to the public from 9am till 4pm. Infantry drill for the public\, kids and adults\, will also be offered. Bring a picnic and simply enjoy the day as you step back in time to the Civil War. Also\, come and explore the eleven historic buildings\, cave\, and nature trail. The historic home of the Confederate Senator Landon Carter Haynes will be open for visitors to tour through.\nAdmission is $6 for adults and $3 for children. Tipton-Haynes members are free!

Local reenactors from the Overmountain Men of Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park will be on the historic grounds for visitors to learn about the formation of the State of Franklin\, late 1700s weapons demonstrations\, and a recreation of the battle between neighbors. At 10am and 1pm\, there will be a showing of The Mysterious Lost State of Franklin documentary.  Highlighting the day will be a re-enactment at 2pm of the 238-year-old battle between the forces of Colonel John Tipton and Governor John Sevier. \nCome and also discover the rich history of Tipton-Haynes as you examine the site’s eleven historic structures and limestone cave. Come out to discover the history\, lore\, and method of making maple syrup. See how the sap is extracted from the maple trees located throughout the grounds of the site and then watch as the sap is boiled down over a wood fired furnace until it becomes the rich\, flavorful maple syrup that you love so much. \nFrom 8am to 11am\, a pancake breakfast with delicious maple syrup from Maple Grove Farm of Afton\, Tennessee\, will allow visitors to enjoy the deliciousness of nature. Accompanying the pancakes will be bacon\, sausage\, grits\, and more. Juice\, coffee\, and milk will also be available. Be sure to arrive early and let us feed you before watching our volunteers boil the sap into maple syrup. SUMMARY:19th Annual Sorghum Festival
DESCRIPTION:The 19th annual Sorghum Festival will allow visitors to have the opportunity to observe sorghum cane being processed into molasses using a mule-powered mill on Saturday\, September 15th at the Tipton-Haynes State Historic Site in Johnson City from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. \n \nThe mules will be out turning the cast iron rollers squeezing out the delectable juices to be boiled down into molasses. Just to watch the mule work is worth a visit to the site! While activities will take place all day\, Oscar\, his crew\, and the mules will be milling the cane in the earlier part of the day\, so be sure to come during the morning hours.Visitors can enjoy touring the historic structures of the property that will take you back to the 1800s. Spend some time in the cabin as delicious open hearth cooking can be enjoyed. The historic cave will be open for everybody of all ages to explore and find their inner spelunker. The Model A Mac’s car club will be on site displaying their antique cars for visitors to see and ask questions about. There will also be several local vendors selling homemade crafts. So come out and support our local craftsmen! \nSimply relax in the shade and appreciate the historic atmosphere while getting away from the fast pace of the twenty first century. Admission is $5 for adults\, $2.50 for children twelve and under\, and kids under 3 are free. As always\, members of the Tipton Haynes Historical Association are FREE. Tipton-Haynes is located at 2620 South Roan Street Johnson City\, exit 24 off I-26 and follow the signs to the site. \nTipton-Haynes State Historic Site is a Tennessee Historical Commission State-Owned Historic Site.
