SUMMARY:15th Annual Dragonfly Day
DESCRIPTION:With Don Holt\, Steele Creek Park Naturalist\nand Marty Silver\, Warriors’ Path Park Ranger \nAbout the Guest Speakers:\nOur chief guest leader is naturalist Don Holt. Don has been an enthusiastic observer of the natural world of\nNortheast Tennessee since his youngest days. You might call Don Holt one of the last of the “traditional” naturalists\n– since he is an expert on SO MANY facets of the natural world – from native plants to migratory birds\, from\ndragonflies to local geology. Don has shared his expertise\, his wisdom\, and his conservation concern at Cedar Creek\nLearning Center\, at the Clyde Austin 4-H Center\, and currently at the Steele Creek Park Nature Center. \nOur assistant leader is Ranger Marty Silver. Ranger Marty has worked as a Ranger & Naturalist for Tennessee\nState Parks for over 45 years\, sharing nature discovery and conservation awareness with tens of thousands of park\nvisitors and local school children. He is an enthusiastic\, proficient amateur observer of native dragonflies\, and\nenjoys sharing his dragonfly knowledge and dragonfly photographic techniques. \nAbout the Seminar:\nOur region is rich in many varieties of these amazing insects. Dragonflies are fun and challenging to observe. They\nare also excellent indicators of the health of our natural places. Come spend a day learning to study dragonflies “at\nhome” in their habitats\, and also how best to record your observations with photographs. \nWe’ll begin with a short indoor talk on dragonfly observation and identification. Then we’ll spend most of the day\noutdoors in a variety of natural places\, getting “up close and personal” with native dragonflies. Bring a sack lunch\,\nand dress for outdoor\, wet field conditions. Also bring close-focusing binoculars and a camera if you have them.\nRemember to pre-register and pay the registration fee if you plan to attend. \n  \nFor More Information and to Pre-register:\nWarriors’ Path State Park\, PO Box 5026\nKingsport\, TN 37663\, (423) 239-6786\nemail: Marty.Silver@tn.gov\nOr register online at:\nhttps://reserve.tnstateparks.com/register/dragonfly-day–15th-annual

SUMMARY:Hiking Adventure - Margarette Falls and MORE
DESCRIPTION:Ready for a two-part HIKING ADVENTURE? Join us as we head out to a lovely waterfall and then offer an option to explore some remote wilderness trails in nearby Greene County TN. Along the way\, we’ll experience unique geology as well as rich natural history. \nWe’re calling this a “hybrid hike” because it includes both a beginner’s hike and a more difficult hike – “two for the price of one!” The first portion of our adventure is relatively easy. We’ll follow a gentle uphill grade\, with only one unbridged creek crossing\, up to lovely Margarette Falls. After this 3 mile round trip walk\, you can choose to return home\, or to continue to some much more difficult nearby trails. Note that this second option is a VERY DIFFICULT hike. We’ll travel semi-maintained trails that will include numerous creek crossings\, dense rhododendron thickets and frequent blowdowns. We’ll also have a chance to view remote Mary’s Falls This second part of our adventure is NOT for the “faint of heart!” – participants should be experienced hikers! Wear long pants and sturdy hiking boots. Bring plenty of food and water and extra clothing layers – weather can change quickly here in the mountains! \nWe’ll meet at Warriors’ Path pool parking lot\, departing PROMPTLY at 7:30 AM to caravan to the trailhead. It’s about a one hour drive to the start of our hike. \nNote that you must preregister (and pay registration fees) if you wish to participate.

SUMMARY:Frog Watch @ Jacob's Nature Park
DESCRIPTION:Will the Spring Peepers\, Pickerel Frogs or Chorus Frogs be singing at Jacob’s Nature Park tonight? It depends on temperature\, humidity\, wind\, and the whims of the frogs! Let’s head out to this amazing rich wetland to “listen in” and (hopefully) watch them as well. Even if there are no frogs singing tonight\, we’ll still enjoy a night-time stroll rich with the sounds of the night. And each participant will get to take home a CD of local frog “music.” \nCome dressed warmly\, wear waterproof footwear\, bring along a flashlight with fresh batteries\, and be prepared to wait very quietly in the cool damp marsh. \nWe’ll meet promptly at 7 PM at the pool parking lot\, and caravan to the start of a short SOGGY walk.

SUMMARY:Adopt a Tree
DESCRIPTION:You can make a big difference for our future! Help us bring “re-leaf” to Northeast Tennessee by planting tomorrow’s forests. Your hard work will mean more wildlife homes\, more natural beauty\, more fresh air\, and more fun for future children too! \nOn Saturday\, February 22\, from 10 AM until noon\, you can help us plant hundreds of new trees at Warriors’ Path State Park. For every tree seedling you plant\, you will also get one to take home\, to plant in your own neighborhood. Be sure to come early because supplies of trees are limited! \nWe will have some digging tools\, but you can also bring your own if you’d like. Come dressed for the weather\, and be prepared to get your hands dirty! Follow signs from the park entrance to the tree distribution location. \nIMPORTANT NOTE – You DO NOT have to register. We are offering registration in case you’d like to donate to help support our tree planting and other conservation efforts.

SUMMARY:Hiking Adventure - North Fork Stony Creek Waterfall
DESCRIPTION:Ready for a real HIKING ADVENTURE? Join us as we head out to a lovely waterfall in a remote corner of Holston Mountain\, in nearby Carter County TN. Along the way\, we’ll experience ridgetop geology\, winter woodland discovery\, and\, weather permitting\, fine views across Shady Valley. We’ll cover over 10 miles of rugged terrain. \nPlease note that this is a VERY DIFFICULT hike. We’ll travel old unmaintained trails\, semi-maintained trails\, and almost a mile of crawling through dense rhododendron thickets. This adventure is NOT for the “faint of heart!” – participants must be experienced hikers! Wear long pants and sturdy hiking boots. Bring plenty of food and water and extra clothing layers – weather can change quickly here in the mountains! \nWe’ll meet at Warriors’ Path pool parking lot\, departing PROMPTLY at 7:30 AM to carpool to the trailhead. It’s about a one hour drive to the start of our hike. \nRemember that you must preregister (and pay registration fees) if you wish to participate. \nIMPORTANT NOTE – This Hiking Adventure may be cancelled and/or rescheduled in case of unsafe road conditions.
