McKinney Center: Community Listening Day
McKinney Center honors Veterans Day with Community Listening Day
In honor of Veterans Day, The McKinney Center, StoryTown Radio Show and the Jonesborough Senior Center will host a “Listening Day” on Thursday, November 9. Area veterans are invited to the Jonesborough Senior Center, located at 307 East Main Street, to connect with fellow veterans by sharing stories from their time of service.
Listening Day will begin at 10 a.m. with a story circle, a time for veterans to share and listen to each other’s stories in a group setting. Please call the McKinney Center or sign up at the Jonesborough Senior Center to reserve a place in this session that will last until 11 a.m.
The Listening Day will continue with individual interviews from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. These do not require a reservation.
For more information or to reserve a spot for the Veterans Day Listening Day, call the McKinney Center at 423.753.0562.
These stories will be recorded and archived on behalf of The Story Initiative in Jonesborough. The recordings may be used as source material for StoryTown programming, including the StoryTown Radio Show. This one-hour live performance, presented as an old-time radio show, celebrates the culture of East Tennessee by featuring true stories from the area and a local music guest. The show can be enjoyed at the live performance, on WETS 89.5 and on the StoryTown Radio Show podcast.
The Story Initiative values everyone’s stories. It aims to bring together people of all ages and backgrounds to strengthen community through shared stories. The Story Initiative is always open to collecting the stories of Washington County and Jonesborough residents.
