The Bays Mountain Park Association has partnered with a local yoga instructor to offer residents a series of yoga classes inside the park’s planetarium theater this spring.
The following classes will be held beginning in March:
– Winter Planetarium Yoga: March 6 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
– Spring Equinox Yoga: March 21 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
– Spring Planetarium Yoga: April 3 from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
– Earth Day Yoga: April 22 from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
– Mother’s Day Yoga: May 9 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
Finally, a special Yoga on the Barge session will be held on May 23 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. (weather permitting).
From dawn to dusk, the planetarium will feature a Sun and Moon that simulates a day’s journey in 30 minutes while performing Sun Salutations, Warrior series and balance poses.
Concentric, eccentric and isometric contractions will be featured so students can work to optimize both their strength and balance as well as their mobility. Finally, the sessions conclude with a relaxing starry night sky for the remaining 10 minutes of the class.
Each class is approximately 45 minutes in length, and the cost is $12 per person. Class size is limited to 9 people. Participants of all levels are welcome to attend. Wear exercise clothing, bring your own mat and water bottle with a sealable lid.

About the City of Kingsport
Founded in 1917, the City of Kingsport (pop. 55,400) is located on the Tennessee-Virginia border at the crossroads of I-81 and I-26 near the geographic center of the eastern United States. The city is widely known as a planned community, designed by renowned city planner John Nolen and wrapping around the foot of Bays Mountain – a 3,750-acre park, nature preserve, planetarium and observatory. Kingsport is recognized as an International Safe Community by the National Safety Council, a Healthier Tennessee community, and won the 2009 Harvard Innovations in American Government Award for its higher education initiatives. While many city names are duplicated throughout the U.S., there’s only one Kingsport – a fact that invokes community pride, known locally as the “Kingsport Spirit.” For more information, please visit www.kingsporttn.gov.
