20th Anniversary of Oak Hill School
October 13, 2019 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
On Sunday, October 13th, the Heritage Alliance will celebrate the 20thAnniversary of the Oak Hill School Heritage Education Program at the old, one room schoolhouse. The event will take place from 2:00-4:00 at Oak Hill School, located at 214 East Sabin Drive in Jonesborough across from the Jonesborough Public Library. Oak Hill School was built in 1886 and was originally located in the Knob Creek area of Johnson City. It was a part of Washington County Schools until the 1950s and educated students in 1stthrough 8th grades. The building was moved to Jonesborough in the 1990s to save it and is now the largest artifact in the collection of the Jonesborough & Washington County History Museum.
Since 1999, the Oak Hill School Heritage Education Program has transported area students back to 1892-1893 to experience what school was like over 100 years ago. The award winning program continues to this day, and the school’s doors will be open on October 13th for an anniversary celebration! Visit the schoolhouse and write on the slate boards, try your hand at the quill pen, and play old timey games on the lawn.
If you are alumni of Oak Hill School, or the family of alumni, we invite you to share your stories with the StoryTown Initiative at a special Story Circle from 3:00-4:00 at the Jonesborough Public Library. We also invite past participants in the program to share their stories as we commemorate the legacy of the schoolhouse and the students it has educated throughout the years.
