15th Annual Dragonfly Day

June 14 @ 9:30 am - 2:00 pm

With Don Holt, Steele Creek Park Naturalist
and Marty Silver, Warriors’ Path Park Ranger

About the Guest Speakers:
Our chief guest leader is naturalist Don Holt. Don has been an enthusiastic observer of the natural world of
Northeast Tennessee since his youngest days. You might call Don Holt one of the last of the “traditional” naturalists
– since he is an expert on SO MANY facets of the natural world – from native plants to migratory birds, from
dragonflies to local geology. Don has shared his expertise, his wisdom, and his conservation concern at Cedar Creek
Learning Center, at the Clyde Austin 4-H Center, and currently at the Steele Creek Park Nature Center.

Our assistant leader is Ranger Marty Silver. Ranger Marty has worked as a Ranger & Naturalist for Tennessee
State Parks for over 45 years, sharing nature discovery and conservation awareness with tens of thousands of park
visitors and local school children. He is an enthusiastic, proficient amateur observer of native dragonflies, and
enjoys sharing his dragonfly knowledge and dragonfly photographic techniques.

About the Seminar:
Our region is rich in many varieties of these amazing insects. Dragonflies are fun and challenging to observe. They
are also excellent indicators of the health of our natural places. Come spend a day learning to study dragonflies “at
home” in their habitats, and also how best to record your observations with photographs.

We’ll begin with a short indoor talk on dragonfly observation and identification. Then we’ll spend most of the day
outdoors in a variety of natural places, getting “up close and personal” with native dragonflies. Bring a sack lunch,
and dress for outdoor, wet field conditions. Also bring close-focusing binoculars and a camera if you have them.
Remember to pre-register and pay the registration fee if you plan to attend.
