Warriors Path State Park: Summer in the Park

June 2 - June 9

MONDAY, JUNE 2
4:00 PM BAT & MOTH – Use your ears and your “bug hunting” skills! See if you could
survive a night out in the woods and fields — if you were a flying bug! Meet at
the Campfire Circle (east end of main campground), or main bath house if it is
raining.

6:00 PM CHEROKEE GAMES – Let’s play some traditional Cherokee games. See
what life was like for Native American children, before the days of video
games! Meet at the Campfire Circle (east end of main campground), or main
bath house if it is raining.

TUESDAY, JUNE 3
9:30 AM WAKE UP WALK – Let’s wake up our senses to morning in the forest. Meet

at the main bath house for a refreshing morning walk.

10:30 AM TENNESSEE TRIVIA – Come test out your skills and see how well you
REALLY know our state. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if
it is raining.

11:30 AM ANIMAL HOMES – Meet some small “guest speakers” and discover more
about who is “at home” here at the park. Come to the Open Air Chapel to find
out about their habitats, and ours. In case of rain, meet at the main bath
house.

1:00 PM ORIENTEERING – Don’t get lost! Come learn how to use one of the world’s
oldest and most useful navigating tools. Then, we’ll set out on an “expedition”
of our own! Meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the main
bath house.

2:00 PM DEVIL’S BACKBONE HIKE -Come hike to the high places, and get some
new views of our park land. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the
start of an invigorating hike.

4:00 PM LOW IMPACT CAMPING – We can enjoy wilderness camping while also
leaving the land as beautiful as it was. Come and learn how to leave no trace
of your presence on your next camping adventure! Meet at the Open Air
Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.

6:00 PM BIRD CALL BINGO – Which bird song is that? Let’s “listen in” to some
common Tennessee bird calls, then test our knowledge through a classic game
of bingo. You might even get a prize! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or the
main bath house if it’s raining

7:00 PM LITTER SCAVENGER HUNT – Be a park “trash detective” for a day! Use
the clues to find out more about a cleaner park and a cleaner Earth. If you’re
lucky enough, you might even win a prize for helping out Mother Nature!!

9:00 PM DRAGONFLIES – These fascinating insects have some amazing life stories to
tell. Come enjoy a slide-illustrated talk about these “bugs” that zip through
the summer skies. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or the main bath house if it’s
raining.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 4
8:00 AM NATIVE TREES HIKE – Come hike under our native trees, and get to know

them a bit better. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.

10:00 AM DON’T JUST TRASH IT – What can we do about our garbage problems – today
and in the future? Let’s discover some new solutions. After the talk, see if you
can create your own “trash monster”! Meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case of
rain, meet at the main bath house.

12 NOON MEET THE “ALIENS” – They’re not outer space creatures, but alien plants
and animals from other parts of our world! Enjoy a short hike to find out more
about these “strange invaders!” Meet at the Duck Island Kiosk.

1:30 PM WETLAND WALK – Wetlands are wet, and full of life! Come along for a soggy
hike near Fall Creek, on the far side of the Devil’s Backbone. We might even
spot a few dragonflies! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.

3:00 PM CORN HUSK CRAFTS – The early settlers along the Warriors’ Path couldn’t
afford to waste anything! Even old corn husks could become a doll or toy. Meet
at the Open Air Chapel to try this old-timey craft. If it’s raining, meet at the
main bath house.

5:00 PM “WONDERFUL WACKY WET WEDNESDAY” – Let’s enjoy some kid-friendly
water play and learning activities. You might even get to soak the Park Ranger.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel and be prepared to get VERY WET!

8:00 PM RAFT CRAFT – Years ago, men needed to know how to make rafts of huge logs,
to travel the river and to sell timber. Today, we can make little rafts just for fun,
and to remember those early days. Afterwards, we will go down to the shore and
try out our new rafts! Meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the
main bath house.
THURSDAY, JUNE 5
9:30 AM SINKING WATERS RIDGE HIKE – Explore succession – the changing face of
nature – on the first loop of the Sinking Waters Trail. We’ll discover the
woodlands changing all around us! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to
the start of the trail.

11:00 AM LEAVE NO TRACE – Let’s enjoy a nice leisurely stroll along the Lakeshore
Trail and learn how to cover up our tracks in the process! Meet at the main
campground boat ramp. In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.
12 NOON WOODLAND RIDGE HIKE – Enjoy the peace and the excitement of these
ancient ridgeline forests. Wear sturdy walking shoes, bring water, and be
prepared for some steep and rocky places. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll
carpool.

1:30 PM WATERSCOPES – Make your own “window” into the world of water. Bring
along an old milk carton if you have one and we’ll build a little tool to help us see
life in the creek! Meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the main
bath house.

3:00 PM NATURE GAMES – Don’t miss the natural fun – for the young or the young-at-
heart! Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively games about our natural

world. If it’s raining, meet at the main bath house.

4:30 PM SKY ART – What does the sky look like today? How does the sky change with
the day? Help us be “sky watchers”, and then create a permanent image of the
sky you see above us! Meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the
main bath house.

THURSDAY, CONTINUED:
6:00 PM TEA TIME -Bring a mug (if you have one) to enjoy some sweet pine needle tea
as we “brew up” some memories of the old days along the Warriors’ Path. Meet
at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.

8:00 PM STATE SYMBOLS – Enjoy a slide-illustrated talk on our Tennessee State
Symbols, and discover which symbols you can find here at our park! Meet at the
Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

FRIDAY, JUNE 6
9:30 AM RIVERBANK STROLL -This green river valley has seen generations of
travelers. Let’s travel together and search for signs of the wildlife and the people
who came before us. Meet at the main campground bath house.

11:00 AM JUNIOR RANGERS: CLEAN-UP WALK – Help the Park Rangers keep our
park clean & safe, and begin to earn your Junior Ranger badge. Meet at the
Main Bath House and be prepared to get a little dirty.

12 NOON STREAM CLEAN – Come out and let’s help our creek critter neighbors enjoy a
cleaner habitat! Also enjoy a nice and refreshing “dip” in the creek! Be prepared
to get wet. Meet at the Boundless Playground entrance.

1:30 PM MUD ART – Let’s have a messy, slimy good time! You’ll be amazed at how
creative you can be with nature’s own “finger-paint”. Meet at the campfire circle,
east end of the main campground.

3:00 PM HIDE & SEEK – Wild “critters” don’t PLAY hide & seek – they hide and they
seek to stay alive. Find out more about how animals hide, and then we’ll play
our own hide & seek game! Meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at
the main bath house.

5:00 PM PINE CONE BIRD FEEDERS – Let’s make a snack for our feathered friends!
Meet at the Open Air Chapel, and you’ll be able to bring back home your own
little bird feeder. In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.
(ALLERGY ALERT – we will be using peanut butter.)

6:00 PM FIREBUILDING – What’s a camping trip without a campfire? Learn how to
build campfires safely and with the least damage to our environment. Meet at
the campfire circle, east end of the campground (main bath house if it’s raining).
7:00 PM OLD TIMEY GAMES – Enjoy some good-old fun! Try some games from the
early settlement days of East Tennessee. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main
bath house if it’s raining.

9:00 PM TENNESSEE TALES – Enjoy new insights into Tennessee Folklife as we share
some good-old traditional tall tales. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or (former)
pool entrance if it rains.

9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
