Warriors Path State Park: Summer in the Park
MONDAY, JUNE 16
6:00 PM GEOLOGIC HISTORY OF TENNESSEE – Discover the “stories in
stones” beneath our Tennessee landscape. Meet at the main bath house
to begin our walk through a rocky past.
7:30 PM PEOPLE TRACKS – Wildlife leave tracks and signs, and so do we. But
we can choose what kind of signs we leave! Let’s go on a short adventure
to find some helpful and harmful people tracks. We’ll see what great
tracks we can leave. Meet at the camp store
TUESDAY, JUNE 17
9:00 AM MORNING WALK – Enjoy the cool and peace of early morning in the
park. Come see and hear what a park is really all about! Meet at the
main bath house
10:00 AM ANIMAL TRACK DRAWING – Learn to “track down” local wildlife. Use
your creative skills at the same time! Your unique design is only a
“footstep” away. Meet at the main bath house.
11:00 AM HABITAT MEANS HOME – Let’s hike the Devil’s Backbone Trail, and
look for clues about who is “at home” in this rich and rugged habitat. This
is a steep and rocky trail, be sure to wear sturdy hiking footwear and
bring some water. Drive to the Camp Store, and we’ll carpool
12 NOON TRASH “MONSTERS” – What can we do about our garbage problems –
today and in the future? Let’s discover some new solutions. After the
talk, see if you can create your own “trash monster”! Meet at the Open
Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
1:30 PM LAKE HOLLOW HIKE – Let’s enjoy the rich discoveries of land and
water life along the Lake Hollow trail. Meet at the main bath house.
3:00 PM ANIMAL PUZZLES – Create your own animal puzzle! Bring your
creativity to the main bath house. When we’re done “puzzling,” we’ll try
to solve each other’s puzzles too!
6:00 PM NOISY TOYS – How did the pioneer children make music or noise?
Make your very own “musical” instrument with a few simple things from
nature. Meet at the Open Air Chapel to create some “beautiful music.” In
case of rain, meet at the main bath house.
9:00 PM NIGHT SOUNDS – Nature is full of sounds when the sun goes down!
Some seem eerie, but there’s no need to be nervous. Come find out whose
noise is whose. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for a short slide show of the
creatures who “talk” in the night! (At the main bath house if it is
raining.) NOTE – there will be a special NIGHT SOUNDS contest for
children after the show.
NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18
6:00 AM SUNRISE HIKE – Yes, it’s VERY EARLY, but it’s the perfect time to see our
green Tennessee hills greet the morning sun! Meet all the other “early birds” at
the Duck Island Kiosk
8:00 AM MEET THE TREES – Take a closer look at our woody friends. Trees have a lot to
teach us about our land and its history. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for this
woody, leafy demonstration. In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.
9:30 AM SINKING WATERS RIDGE HIKE – Explore succession – the changing face of
nature – on the first loop of the Sinking Waters Trail. We’ll discover the
woodlands changing all around us! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to
the start of the trail.
10:30 AM CORN HUSK CRAFTS – The early settlers along the Warriors’ Path couldn’t
afford to waste anything! Even old corn husks could become a doll or toy. Meet at
the Open Air Chapel to try this old-timey craft. If it’s raining, meet at the main
bath house.
11:30 AM TIPS FOR BETTER CAMPING – We can enjoy primitive camping, and not
leave behind all our comforts! Find out how to make your tent a better “home
away from home.” Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.
1:30 PM NATURE PICTIONARY – Picture this: a nature game for the whole family, with
lots of nature discovery built right in! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath
house if it is raining.
4:00 PM “WONDERFUL WACKY WET WEDNESDAY” – Let’s enjoy some kid-friendly
water play and learning activities. You might even get to soak the Park Ranger.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel and be prepared to get VERY WET!
6:00 PM BIRD’S EYE VIEW – Take a hike to the Overlook and look at our world from a
different perspective. Don’t forget your camera! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll
carpool to the start of a short, rocky hike.
THURSDAY, JUNE 19
9:00 AM CAMPGROUND CLEANUP – Make our park a cleaner, healthier environment!
You’ll make a big difference for our earth! Meet at the main bath house. Be
prepared to get dirty!
10:00 AM PLANKTON – For us, the lake is a place to go boating or fishing. But for the
micro-world of plankton, it’s a home. Come help us sample this incredible world of
tiny lives floating in lake water. Meet at the main bath house, and we’ll stroll on
down to the shore.
11:00 AM LITTER SCAVENGER HUNT – You can be a park “trash detective!!” Use the
clues to find out more about a cleaner park and a cleaner earth. You might win a
prize, and you’ll surely win lots of exciting discoveries. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel to begin the hunt.
12 NOON “ALIENS” AMONG US – Not creatures from Mars, but non-native plants and
animals. Come find out how these “invaders” traveled here, and how they affect
our native species. Meet at the Duck Island kiosk for a short walk.
1:30 PM THE LOST TRACK – Our park is tied to history through the rails! Let’s hike
the old railroad grade, and hear the stories of these old railroaders’ lives. Meet at
the Holston Bluffs Trail sign – in the Moody Bluff Campground. Wear sturdy
walking footwear.
THURSDAY, CONTINUED:
3:00 PM PARK ART – With a few artistic tools, and a bit of drawing skill, you can create a
beautiful picture of what our park was, and is, and will be. Meet at the main bath
house to create a park masterpiece!
4:30 PM ANIMAL CHARADES – Explore your wild side and show off your acting skills
with a fun game of animal charades! See if you can walk, talk, and squawk like
the animals here in the park. Meet at the Open Air Chapel or the main bath
house if it’s raining.
6:00 PM SEED RACES – Wind, water, and animals carry seeds of new trees and plants all
across the land. Our “wind” can help too! Meet at the Open Air Chapel to show off
your “hot air” and plant some new life. Meet at the main bath house if it rains.
9:00 PM TENNESSEE SEASONS, TENNESSEE WILDLIFE – Enjoy a tour of all four
seasons in the hills of Tennessee. With words and pictures, we will experience the
excitement of year-round discovery. After the slide show, one of our “Wildlife
Ambassadors” will share a lesson on Wildlife Tracking and reading “Critter
Signs.” Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
FRIDAY, JUNE 20
8:00 AM HISTORY HIKE – Let’s hike “back into the past” of the Warriors’ Path, as we
search for the footsteps of those who came before us. Meet at the main bath house.
9:00 AM HIKE THE BONEYARD – Come explore a remote corner of Warriors’ Path, full
of geologic discovery. This will be a challenging 2-3 mile hike, so be sure to wear
comfortable clothes, good hiking shoes, and bring some drinking water. Meet at
the park’s Mountain Bike Trail parking area (at the end of Freeman Road,
Blountville TN)
10:30 AM ORIENTEERING – Don’t get lost! Come learn how to use one of the world’s
oldest and most useful navigating tools. Then, we’ll set out on an “expedition” of
our own! Meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the main bath
house.
11:30 AM CHEROKEE GAMES – Let’s play some traditional Cherokee games. See what
life was like for Native American children, before the days of video games! Meet at
the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
1:00 PM TENNESSEE TRIVIA – Come test out your skills and see how well you REALLY
know our state. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
2:00 PM RAFT CRAFT – Years ago, men needed to know how to make rafts of huge logs,
to travel the river and to sell timber. Today we can make little rafts just for fun,
and to remember those early days. Meet at the Open Air Chapel (or main bath
house if it is raining). We might even try out our new toy rafts at the shore!
4:30 PM CAMPGROUND BIKE RIDE – Meet at the camp store and we’ll pedal around
the campground area. Enjoy the wind in your face, and the richness of park
scenery. Note that ALL riders MUST wear a bicycle helmet. Children 10 or under
must be accompanied by an adult!
6:00 PM OLD TIMEY GAMES – Enjoy some good-old fun! Try some games from the early
settlement days of East Tennessee. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath
house if it’s raining.
9:00 PM TENNESSEE TALES – Enjoy new insights into Tennessee Folklife as we share
some good-old traditional tall tales. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath
house if it rains.
SATURDAY, JUNE 21
10:00 AM CREEK WALK – Get on your old clothes and tennis shoes. It’s time to explore the
cool, clear creek waters. We’ll discover a world of amazing life. Drive to the camp
store, and we’ll carpool. Be prepared to get wet!
1:00 PM 100 INCH HIKE – Especially for small, tired feet! Discover life on the tiny side.
This will also be a great chance to catch a critter for the races! Meet at the main
bath house.
1:30 PM CRITTER RACE FOR FREEDOM – Bring your best creepy crawler to the main
bath house. They’ll all win, because they’ll all get their freedom. No pets or flying
creatures please.
4:00 PM EARTHBALL GAMES – Let’s have a ball – a six foot tall ball!! Meet at the Open
Air Chapel for some lively, cooperative games. If it rains, we’ll have some smaller
ball games at the main bath house.
6:00 PM BAT & MOTH – Use your ears and your “bug hunting” skills! See if you could
survive a night out in the woods and fields — if you were a flying bug! Meet at the
Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
7:30 PM TEA TIME -Bring a mug (if you have one) to enjoy some sweet tea as we “brew
up” some memories of the old days along the Warriors’ Path. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.
9:00 PM CAMPFIRE – What a great combination: A dark night, a bright fire, and some
traditional riddles. Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the main campground.
If it is raining, we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the main bath house.
SUNDAY, JUNE 22
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
