Warriors Path: Summer in the Park

June 23 - June 29

MONDAY, JUNE 23

7:30 PM BIRD CALL BINGO – Which bird song is that? Let’s “listen in” to some

common Tennessee bird calls, then test our knowledge through a classic

game of bingo. You might even get a prize! Meet at the main bathhouse.

STATE SYMBOLS – Enjoy a slide-illustrated talk on our Tennessee

State Symbols, and discover which symbols you can find here at our

park! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

TUESDAY, JUNE 24

8:30 AM HIKE PAW PAW CREEK – Come hike a remote wetland trail. Discover

the amazing natural diversity in these lush green woods. Meet at the

Mountain Bike Trail parking lot. Be sure to wear good hiking footwear.

MEET THE SNAKES – VENOMOUS OR NOT – They’re not the

fearsome creatures you’ve been led to believe! Come out and learn the

facts about these interesting and helpful animals. Meet at the Open Air

Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.

BAT & MOTH – Use your ears and your “bug hunting” skills! See if you

could survive a night out in the woods and fields — if you were a flying

bug! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

LEAF ID BOOK – Leaves are shade on a hot summer day. Leaves are

the green carpet of the hills. Leaves are full of amazing stories! Let’s find

out more about the names and stories of our green neighbors. Meet at the

Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

MEET THE TREES – Take a closer look at our woody friends. Trees

have a lot to teach us about our land and its history. Meet at the Open

Air Chapel for this woody, leafy demonstration. In case of rain, meet at

the main bath house.

CREEK CRITTERS – Come find out what critters are hidden in the

waters of East Tennessee and what they can tell us about the health of

our water. Wear closed-toe shoes and be prepared to get wet! Meet at the

Boundless Playground.

HIDE & SEEK – Wild “critters” don’t play hide & seek – they hide and

they seek to stay alive! Find about more about how animals hide, and

then we’ll play our own hide & seek game. Meet at the Open Air Chapel,

or main bath house if it is raining.

6:00 PM TREE TOOLS – How big is that tree? How old is it? What wildlife could be

hiding in it? Come see and try out some of the tools that foresters use to study

and protect our native trees. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if

it is raining.

FOREST TREES – Take a “hike” from the comfort of your seat. Enjoy a “tour”

of our nearby forest habitats using words and pictures. After the slide show,

we’ll share a demonstration of how to identify our local trees. Meet at the Open

Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25

6:00 AM SUNRISE HIKE – Yes, it’s VERY EARLY, but it’s the perfect time to see our

green Tennessee hills greet the morning sun! Meet all the other “early birds” at

the Duck Island Kiosk

WETLAND WALK – Wetlands are wet, and full of life! Come along for a soggy

hike near Fall Creek, on the far side of the Devil’s Backbone. We might even

spot a few dragonflies! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.

ANIMAL TRACK DRAWING – Learn to “track down” local wildlife. Use your

creative skills at the same time! Your unique design is only a “footstep” away.

Meet at the main bath house.

MAGNIFYING GLASS WALK – Use your eyes and some handy little

magnifiers to get a close look at nature’s amazing details. Meet at the main bath

house to begin a short discovery walk.

BUILD A CABIN – You’ve heard their stories, now it’s time to build your own.

Come create a little model log cabin with some sticks, some glue, and your

creativity. Meet at the main bath house.

SKULLS – NATURE’S TOOL BOX – Every animal carries along all the tools it

needs for survival! Come investigate some natural “tool boxes,” and find out

more about each animal’s job! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house

if it is raining.

TAG – You’re it! You’re the one we need to make all these great tag games work.

Meet at the Open Air Chapel for all kinds of tag games. If it is raining, meet at

the main bath house.

HIKE BACK IN TIME – Let’s take a walk on some ancient trails, and gain new

insights into those who traveled before us. Meet at the camp store.

OWL & MOUSE – Test your skills as an owl (or a mouse!) with some lively

games! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

THURSDAY, JUNE 26

9:30 AM WAKE UP WALK – Let’s wake up our senses to morning in the forest. Meet at

the main bath house for a refreshing morning walk.

11:00 AM JUNIOR RANGERS: TRAIL CLEANUP – Make our park a cleaner, healthier

environment! You’ll make a big difference for our earth, and begin to earn your

Junior Ranger badge. Meet at the main bath house. Be prepared to get dirty!

BEAD CRAFT – Native peoples along the Warriors’ Path used beads,and so can

you! Find out about Cherokee beading, then make your own personalized bead

jewelry. Meet at the Campfire circle, east end of the main campground. In case

of rain, meet at the main bath house.

2:00 PM MUD ART – Let’s have a messy, slimy good time! You’ll be amazed at how

creative you can be with nature’s own “finger-paint”. Meet at the Boundless

Playground.

CHEROKEE GAMES – Let’s play a traditional Cherokee game. See what life

was like for Native American children, before the days of video games! Meet at

the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

CAPTURE THE FLAG – Join in the fun with an old favorite. Meet at the Open

Air Chapel and be ready to protect your flag from the enemy.

STORY HOUR – Come relax under a big shade tree during the heat of the day

to enjoy some great stories from Cherokee and Appalachian lore. Meet at the

Open Air Chapel or main bath house if its raining.

BIRDS OF PREY – Meet a real live feathered hunter, and learn his fascinating

life story. One of our “Wildlife Ambassadors” will be waiting for you at the Open

Air Chapel . If it is raining, meet at the main bath house.

NIGHT HIKE TO SINKING WATERS – It’s a whole different world out there

at night! Tonight is our chance to discover the peace and the excitement of a

night in the Sinking Waters wetland. Bring a dim flashlight and drive to the

camp store. We’ll carpool out to the park back country.

FRIDAY, JUNE 27

8:00 AM BREAKFAST WITH THE BIRDS – Come wake up to our feathered neighbors.

Meet at the main bath house to begin a stroll through bird country! (The first 12

people to come get free doughnut & juice!)

WHAT’S IN MY PACK? – Not sure what you need for the trail? Come learn

about what you DO and DON’T need to pack for a fun hike. Meet at the Open

Air Chapel (or main bath house if it’s raining).

TURTLE TALK – Meet one of our wildlife ambassadors – a real, live “shelled

friend” – and find out more about turtles’ amazing lives. Meet at the Open Air

Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

NATURE GUESS WHO? – Is it fuzzy? Does it fly? Does this sound like fun?

Come join us for a game of “guess who,” nature style. Meet at the Open Air

Chapel, or the main bath house if it is raining.

STATE PARK “JEOPARDY” – Let’s try a natural version of the famous game

show. Test your skills and see how much you REALLY know about our State

Parks. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

INVADERS AMONG US – Discover more about the dangers of invasive plant

and animal species by playing a nature game about these invaders. Meet at the

Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.

100 INCH HIKE – Especially for small, tired feet! Discover life on the tiny side.

Meet at the main bath house.

OLD TIMEY GAMES – Enjoy some good-old fun! Try some games from the

early settlement days of East Tennessee. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main

bath house if it’s raining.

TENNESSEE TALES – Enjoy new insights into Tennessee Folklife as we share

some good-old traditional tall tales. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath

house if it rains.

8:30 AM HIKE THE “DARWIN’S REVENGE” TRAIL – It may have a very strange

name, but it is an awesome trail! Come spend a few hours in one of the most

beautiful and wildest parts of the park. Be sure to wear good walking shoes,

comfortable clothes, and bring drinking water. Meet at the park’s Mountain Bike

Trail parking lot (at the end of Freeman Road, Blountville, TN).

11:00 AM WALK THE SOLAR SYSTEM – What if our solar system was just 100 yards

wide? With a piece of chalk, and a bit of imagination, we’ll find our place in the

universe! Meet at the camp store

12 NOON HIKING ESSENTIALS – Don’t hit the trail without them! Meet at the Open

Air Chapel to find out what’s REALLY important for safe and fun nature

exploration. In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.

3:00 PM WALKING TREES, FLYING PLANTS – Wind, water, and animals carry seeds

of new trees and plants all across the land. Our “wind” can help too! Meet at the

Open Air Chapel to show off your “hot air” and plant some new life. Meet at the

main bath house if it rains.

4:00 PM HABITATS – Can you figure out who is “at home” in the park’s natural places?

Let’s check out some “bits and pieces” of nearby habitats! Meet at the Open Air

Chapel, or at the main bath house if it’s raining.

9:00 PM A NIGHT UNDER THE STARS – There’s a universe waiting to be discovered

just above our heads. Let’s look up and wonder at the stars. Meet at the campfire

circle, east end of the main campground. In case of rain, meet at the main bath

house for some night sky legends.

SUNDAY, JUNE 29

9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open

Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial

Heights Baptist Church.
