Summer in the Park: Warriors Path State Park

July 15 - July 21

TUESDAY JULY 15
9:00 AM GEOLOGY HIKE – Enjoy a hike across the rocky landscape, and learn to read
the stories in stones. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, and we’ll walk on over to the
trail.

12 NOON DON’T JUST TRASH IT – What can we do about our garbage problems – today
and in the future? Let’s discover some new solutions. After the talk, see if you
can create your own “trash monster” with bits of trash you bring along! Meet at
the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

2:00 PM NATURE BOOKMARKS – Is there anything more peaceful than nature and a
nice book? Come make a bookmark using the nature around us for you to take
home! Meet at the Open-Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the main bath
house.

4:00 PM SPOTLIGHT WALK – Let’s shine our light on some bright natural discoveries.

Meet at the camp store to begin a short, sunlit hike.

6:00 PM NATURE GAMES – Don’t miss the natural fun – for the young or the young-at-
heart! Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively games about our natural

world. If it’s raining, meet at the main bath house.

9:00 PM DRAGONFLIES – These fascinating insects have some amazing life stories to
tell. Come enjoy a slide-illustrated talk about these “bugs” that zip through the
summer skies. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or the main bath house if it’s
raining.
WEDNESDAY JULY 16
9:30 AM WETLAND WALK – Wetlands are wet, and full of life! Come along for a soggy
hike near Fall Creek, on the far side of the Devil’s Backbone. We might even
spot a few dragonflies! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.

12 NOON PLANKTON – For us, the lake is a place to go boating or fishing. But for the
micro-world of plankton, it’s a home. Come help us sample this incredible world
of tiny lives floating in lake water. Meet at the main bath house, and we’ll stroll
on down to the shore.

2:00 PM NATURE PUZZLES – Create your own nature puzzle! Bring your creativity to
the main bath house. When we’re done “puzzling,” we’ll try to solve each other’s
puzzles too!

4:00 PM “WONDERFUL WACKY WET WEDNESDAY” – Let’s enjoy some kid-friendly
water play and learning activities. You might even get to soak the Park Ranger.
Meet at the Boundless Playground entrance and be prepared to get VERY WET!
6:00 PM THE LOST TRACK – Our park is tied to history through the rails! Let’s hike
the old railroad grade, and hear the stories of these old railroaders’ lives. Meet
at the Holston Bluffs trailhead in the Moody Bluff Campground.

9:00 PM OWL & MOUSE – Test your skills as an owl (or a mouse!) with some lively
games! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified.

THURSDAY JULY 17
9:00 AM HIKE THE WHITETAIL LOOP – Come explore a remote corner of Warriors’
Path, full of wildlife discovery. This will be a challenging 2-3 mile hike, so be
sure to wear comfortable clothes, good hiking shoes, and bring some drinking
water. Meet at the Mountain Bike Trail parking lot (Freeman Rd, Blountville).
11:00 AM HIDE & SEEK – Wild “critters” don’t play hide & seek – they hide and they seek
to stay alive! Find about more about how animals hide, and then we’ll play our
own hide & seek game. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is
raining.

1:30 PM PARK ART – With a few artistic tools, and a bit of drawing skill, you can create
a beautiful picture of what our park was, and is, and will be. Meet at the main
bath house to create a park masterpiece!

4:00 PM PARK PICTIONARY – Picture this: a great game for the whole family, with
lots of park discovery built right in! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath
house if it is raining.

6:00 PM BIRDS OF PREY – Meet a real live feathered hunter. One of our “Wildlife
Ambassadors” is waiting to meet you at the Open Air Chapel. (At the main bath
house if it’s raining).

9:00 PM NIGHT HIKE TO SINKING WATERS – It’s a whole different world out there
at night! Tonight is our chance to discover the peace and the excitement of a
night in the Sinking Waters wetland. Bring a dim flashlight and drive to the
camp store. We’ll carpool out to the park back country.

FRIDAY, JULY 18
9:00 AM HIKE TO ROCK CITY – Come explore a remote corner of Warriors’ Path, full
of geologic discovery. This will be a challenging 3-4 mile hike, so be sure to wear
comfortable clothes, good hiking shoes, and bring some drinking water. Meet at
the Mountain Bike Trail parking area.

12 NOON RAFT CRAFT – Years ago, men needed to know how to make rafts of huge logs,
to travel the river and to sell timber. Today we can make little rafts just for fun,
and to remember those early days. Meet at the Campfire Circle at the east end
of the campground (or main bath house if it is raining). Wear clothes and shoes
you don’t mind to get wet because we might even try out our new toy rafts at the
lake shore!

2:00 PM CHEROKEE GAMES – Let’s play some traditional Cherokee games. See what
life was like for Native American children, before the days of video games! Meet
at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

4:00 PM POLLINATORS ARE PRECIOUS- Let’s take a walk through pollinator
country! Come help us discover the creatures who help craft our future by
helping plants make seeds. Bring yourself and your keen eyes down to the camp
store to begin a short hike.

7:00 PM WILDLIFE TRACKING – You can be a wildlife detective! Learn to read the
tracks, scats, and other signs of our nearby wild creatures. Meet one of our 4-
legged “wildlife ambassadors” at the Open Air Chapel and enjoy his tracking
lesson.(In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.)

9:00 PM PLANTS & POLLINATORS – Enjoy a slide-illustrated talk on native
wildflowers, and the “busy bugs” who help them thrive. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.

SATURDAY, JULY 19
9:00 AM SINKING WATERS RIDGE HIKE – Explore succession – the changing face of
nature – on the first loop of the Sinking Waters Trail. We’ll discover the
woodlands changing all around us! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to
the start of the trail.

11:00 AM ORIENTEERING – Don’t get lost! Come learn how to use one of the world’s
oldest and most useful navigating tools. Then, we’ll set out on an “expedition” of
our own! Meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the main bath
house.

2:00 PM CRITTER PATHS – Be a critter detective! Find out what’s been wandering

through the campground habitats. Meet at the camp store.

4:00 PM CREEK WALK – Get on your old clothes and tennis shoes. It’s time to explore
the cool, clear creek waters. We’ll discover a world of amazing life. Drive to the
camp store, and we’ll carpool. Be prepared to get wet!

8:30 PM FIRE BUILDING TIPS – It’s just not camping without a campfire! But there
are ways to make your campfire safer for us, and for our park land. Meet at the
campfire circle, east end of the campground for some tips.

9:00 PM CHEROKEE CAMPFIRE TALES – Meet at the campfire circle, and enjoy the
stories told by the FIRST travelers along the Warriors’ Path. In case of rain,
we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the main bath house.

SUNDAY, JULY 21
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
