Warriors’ Path State Park Summer Activities
Warriors’ Path State Park Summer activities for the week of June 15-20.
TUESDAY, JUNE 15
1:00 PM NATURE JOURNAL – Come create your own little “nature diary.” Your home-made book will be a perfect way to remember all your nature fun in the park! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or the main bath house if it is raining.
3:30 PM ANIMAL CHARADES – An old favorite with a new twist. See who can act out the best critter! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
6:00 PM SEED RACES – Wind, water, and animals carry seeds of new trees and plants all across the land. Our “wind” can help too! Meet at the Open Air Chapel to show off your “hot air” and plant some new life. Meet at the main bath house if it rains.
BAT & MOTH – Use your ears and your “bug hunting” skills! See if you could survive a night out in the woods and fields — if you were a flying bug! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
9:00 PM DRAGONFLIES – These fascinating insects have some amazing life stories to tell. Come enjoy a slide-illustrated talk about these “bugs” that zip through the summer skies. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or the pool entrance if it’s raining.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 16
10:00 AM EDIBLE PLANTS RAMBLE – Are they weeds or are they dinner? Learn to make a salad from lawn plants. Meet at the camp store and let’s walk on down.
12:30 PM SPIDER SCAVENGER HUNT – Come discover more about our eight legged neighbors! These tiny web-spinners have some incredible stories to tell. Meet at the main bath house.
3:00 PM RIPARIAN RETREAT – Riparian means along the creek bank! Come along for a cool hike near Fall Creek, on the far side of the Devil’s Backbone. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.
6:00 PM TAG – You’re it! You’re the one we need to make all these great tag games work. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for all kinds of tag games. If it is raining, meet at the main bath house.
8:30 PM FURRY FLIERS – There’s no need to fear these furry little pilots! Get the facts about our common East Tennessee bats. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it is raining.
THURSDAY, JUNE 17
9:30 AM MORNING WALK – Enjoy the cool and peace of early morning in the park. Come see and hear what a park is really all about! Meet at the main bath house.
11:30 AM POISONOUS PLANTS – Do you know which plants are not safe to touch? There are more than you may think! Meet at the Open Air Chapel for a short identification discussion that may save you from an accidentally painful experience. Meet in the main bathhouse if it rains.
2:00 PM CANDLEMAKING – We don’t need candles for light as the early settlers did. But we can enjoy the skill of making them. Come create a “bright memory” of the early days. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
4:00 PM NATURE GAMES – Don’t miss the natural fun – for the young or the young-atheart! Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively games about our natural world. If it’s raining, meet at the main bath house.
6:00 PM BIRDS OF PREY – Meet some real live feathered hunters. Come to the Open Air Chapel and see “whooo…” is waiting for you. If it is raining, meet at the main bath house.
9:00 PM NIGHT HIKE TO SINKING WATERS – It’s a whole different world out there at night! Tonight is our chance to discover the peace and the excitement of a night in the Sinking Waters wetland. Bring a dim flashlight and drive to the camp store. We’ll carpool out to the park back country.
FRIDAY, JUNE 18
9:30 AM SINKING WATERS RIDGE HIKE – Explore succession – the changing face of nature – on the first loop of the Sinking Waters Trail. We’ll discover the woodlands changing all around us! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the start of the trail.
12:30 PM PLANKTON – For us, the lake is a place to go boating or fishing. But for the micro-world of plankton, it’s a home. Come help us sample this incredible world of tiny lives floating in lake water. Meet at the main bath house, and we’ll stroll on down to the shore.
3:00 PM SPOTLIGHT WALK – Let’s shine our light on some bright natural discoveries. Meet at the camp store to begin a short, sunlit walk.
4:00 PM HONEYSUCKLE BASKETS – Come try your hand at weaving baskets out of old honeysuckle vines! Those old-timey baskets are not as hard to make as they look! Meet at the Main Bath house.
6:30 PM NATURE “JEOPARDY” – Let’s try out this natural version of the famous game show. Test your skills and see how much you REALLY know about nature. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
8:00 PM NATURE SOUNDS – Let’s listen in to the evening “orchestra” in the woods and fields. Bring your ears to the campfire circle, the east end of the campground. (If it is raining, meet at the pool entrance.)
SATURDAY, JUNE 19
SPECIAL EVENT TODAY – DRAGONFLY DAY – (Pre-registration is required.)
10:30 AM LEAF PRINTS – “Ordinary” leaves come in such extraordinary shapes and textures. We can capture these patterns with ink and paper. Come make a leaf souvenir at the main bath house.
1:00 PM NATURE WREATHS – We can use nature’s incredible patterns and textures to create a beautiful decoration. Meet at the Open Air Chapel and bring your creativity! In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.
4:00 PM FLYWAYS & BYWAYS – Meet at the Open Air Chapel to discover more about the creatures that WING their way through the Warriors’ Path. In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.
7:00 PM OLD TIMEY GAMES – Enjoy some good-old fun! Try some games from the early settlement days of East Tennessee. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.
9:00 PM TENNESSEE TALES – Enjoy new insights into Tennessee Folklife as we share some good-old traditional tall tales. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it rains.
SUNDAY, JUNE 20
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
