Arts & Culture in Rural Appalachian Communities

The importance of arts and culture in rural Appalachian communities is more than meets the eye. Visit Downtown Elizabethton for a true sense of folklore from local artists.

Just ask Paula with The August Muse in Downtown Elizabethton, Northeast Tennessee. “Arts are all over (Elizabethton),” Paula said, “You think of the Betsy Band, and we’ve got Bonnie Kate Theater.” The town hosts a variety of art events throughout the year. Paula opened The August Muse to help the community and Appalachian artists have a central location to connect.

The August Muse is a place where artists and makers can share their story with both the local community and visitors from outside of the region. Art connects people with a sense of a place and soul from whoever created it or “the area that it was created in.” Paula said, “My dream is to empower the arts, to empower the arts in Elizabethton and Carter County.”

Each month, The August Muse features special artists from a variety of mediums. There is also a place for the performing arts, including a fun dance section for children and those interested in expanding their musical talents. Arts and culture in rural Appalachian communities brings visitors and locals together. “It (art) could also raise a person’s perspective, and they could maybe understand another culture better,” Paula said.

You are invited to explore Carter County through the eyes of the arts!
