12th Annual Papa Joe Smiddy Mt. Music Festival
August 31, 2014 @ 5:00 pm - 9:00 pm
The 12th annual Papa Joe Smiddy Mountain Music Festival will be held at the Natural Tunnel State Park amphitheater on Sunday of Labor Day weekend. The festival is presented by the Cove Ridge Center Foundation to promote our Appalachian Heritage of music and to honor University of Virginia at Wise Chancellor Emeritus Dr. Joseph C. “Papa Joe” Smiddy, a well-known old time musician, entertainer, and educator.
The festival is held in the amphitheater at Natural Tunnel State Park in Duffield, Virginia, an affiliated site on “The Crooked Road”. Featured performers are Dale Jett & Hello Stranger, Dr. Joe Smiddy & Reedy Creek, East Tennessee State University Bluegrass and Old Time Pride Bands, and Town Branch Bluegrass Band. The festival will begin at 5 p.m. on August 31. Tom Taylor will serve as the emcee.
Reedy Creek Band has played for 40 years plus over a wide geographic area. Inspired by the broad tastes of Papa Joe Smiddy, the band plays a variety of original and old time music. Papa Joe has played with famous, not famous, and beginning musicians. He is a born entertainer/multi-instrumentalist who has directed an Army band, inspired a college, and clogged in bib overalls in mud. The band features the traditional claw-hammered banjo playing of Papa Joe Smiddy, a fine storyteller as well as musician.
Papa Joe loves to encourage children and looks forward to performing at the Mountain Music School at Mountain Empire Community College on Monday during the last full week of July each year. Papa Joe’s idea to have Pickin’ in the Park at Natural Tunnel State Park held the last Sunday afternoon during the summer months of May, June, and July was to encourage children and families to play music. Pickin’ in the Park has been going on for 14 years.
