8th Annual Dragonfly Day
Joining us for the first time this year is Park Naturalist Don Holt. Don developed an interest in odonates
(dragonflies and damselflies) while canoeing with school children in the Nolichuckey River when he worked in the
1970’s at Cedar Creek Learning Center. By the turn of the century, he was photographing and identifying
odonates as a hobby, eventually producing two articles on odonates for the Tennessee Conservationist magazine.
Don is currently a Park Naturalist at Steele Creek Park in Bristol.
Returning to share his expertise is Larry Everett. Larry is an Aquatic Biologist with the TN Dept of Environment
and Conservation. He has many years of experience working towards the protection of water quality and land and
water resources. Larry has documented a number of previously unknown populations of rare animals and plants.
He has coordinated with numerous agencies and state and federal All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory projects to
protect these populations. Larry has spent many years rearing and learning about dragonfly larvae and adults
and is active with the Dragonfly Society of the Americas.
About the Seminar:
Our region is rich in many varieties of these amazing insects. Dragonflies are fun and challenging to observe. They
are also excellent indicators of the health of our natural places. Come spend a day learning to study dragonflies
“at home” in their habitats, and also how best to record your observations with photographs.
Plan to spend a warm summer day outdoors in a variety of natural places, getting “up close and personal” with
native dragonflies. You should bring a sack lunch, and dress for outdoor, wet field conditions. You should also
bring close-focusing binoculars and a camera if you have them. You can also bring a few of your dragonfly photos
to share and to have identified (time permitting). This is a free event, but you must pre-register if you plan to
attend.
