Crystallized: Nature in Winter

February 23, 2019 @ 12:00 am

Winter: a seemingly static time of hibernation, rest, and self-renewal. Nature bides its time and energy for the waiting Spring. However, there is more to the story. Join Park Ranger Phil Hylen to discover the secrets nature hides in the winter-time. This outdoor expedition will take 10 participants through wetlands, hills, forests, and to the river’s edge in search of life in stasis and life that booms in winter time. Be amazed how life can seem almost crystallized in place as it waits for Spring to reveal itself. Observations and evidence will be collected and brought back to the classroom for discussion.
This adventure will begin on Saturday, Feb 23 at the Old Park Restaurant above cabins 1-20 at 1:00PM. Parking may be done in the lots by and behind cabins 1-20. This program is limited to 10 participants and costs $10.00 per participant. Participants observations will be documented on iNaturalist as a part of an on-going park bioblitz. Be sure to reserve your spot today by clicking on the registration link found on this page. Be sure to bring appropriate clothing for the weather. February can be very cold in the valleys of the Roan with quick wind speeds. Dress in layers and be sure to bring good hiking boots.
