The Senegal St. Joseph Gospel Choir was founded in 1950 by Julien Jouga, a United Nations Ambassador Artist for Peace.
Mr. Jouga was a fervent musician dedicated to Catholic choral singing and inspired by various forms of Senegalese music. He interpreted and combined both the Catholic liturgy along with indigenous Muslim songs of Senegal, creating a unique and extraordinary harmony between the two cultures that comprise that nation. For his work, Jouga has been described as a visionary in the development and preservation of Senegalese Culture.
The choir, now led by Music Director Ambroise N’Diong, is composed of the cathedral chorale from St. Joseph’s of Medina, located in the heart of Dakar’s most working-class neighborhood.
The voices rise in beautiful harmony, in celebration of the folklore and traditions of Senegal.
