Sweet Honey in the Rock
Sweet Honey in the Rock will bring its unique mixture of a cappella five-part harmony, African-American cultural roots and American Sign Language interpretation to ETSU’s Martha Street Culp Auditorium Thursday, Oct. 30 at 7:30 p.m. Founded in 1973, Sweet Honey weaves a “complex journey of celebration and struggle rooted in the history of the African-American legacy,” says Allmusic.com. Their performances have been called “transforming,” “magnificent” and “breathtaking” by reviewers. Challenge and change are the themes underlying the ensemble’s 40-year career. Its adventurous and diverse mixture of blues, African, jazz, gospel and R&B music, with excursions into symphonic and dance theater, have taken the group from its 1973 roots in Washington, D.C. to the United Kingdom, Japan, Africa, Australia and throughout Europe and America – and back to D.C. and the Kennedy Center. Tickets will be $5 students, $20 seniors 60 and over and $25 general admission. For information, call 423-439-TKTS (8587) or visit www.etsu.edu/martin.
