Tales of Our 250th: A Jonesborough History Variety Show – The Lost State of Franklin

Tales of Our 250th continues at the Jackson Theatre on September 24th. Have you ever driven down State of Franklin Road or passed State of Franklin Bank and wondered what the name was all about? Come on out to the Jackson and learn about the state that never was. The State of Franklin was the first attempt at statehood outside of the original 13 colonies. At its height, it included eight counties in what today is Northeast Tennessee, and Jonesborough was its first capital. Even though it never came to pass, the attempt brought John Sevier and John Tipton to the forefront of the political arena and influenced the United States Constitution.
The evening will include a scene from the play The First and Last Town in Tennessee and a historical discussion about the State of Franklin with Dr. William Hardy, Assistant Professor of History and Lincoln Scholar at Lincoln Memorial University. Dr. Hardy will be joined by the co-directors of Tipton Haynes State Historic Site, John Tipton’s homeplace, who will talk about the Battle of Franklin that took place in February of 1788 at the site.
Celebrate local history with the McKinney Center at the Jackson Theatre. The event will start at 7:00 pm. This series is Pay What You Can but go ahead and reserve your seats at thejacksontheatre.com.
