Warriors Path State Park: Summer in the Park

TUESDAY AUGUST 4
10:00 AM WAKE UP LAKE HOLLOW – It’s wake-up time on the Lake Hollow
Trail! Meet at the main bathhouse for a refreshing morning stroll.

2:00 PM LIFE UNDER LOGS – Every corner of this earth is a home – and rotten
logs are some of the best! Help us “dig into” this unique habitat. Meet at
the main bath house, and be ready to get your hands dirty. (Please
preregister for this activity.)
3:30 PM INSECT ART – They’re more than just creepy crawlers. Take a closer
look – insects have some amazing colors and patterns! Let’s use insects as
“living models” for our art. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath
house if it is raining.
6:00 PM HABITATS – Can you figure out who is “at home” in the park’s natural
places? Let’s check out some “bits and pieces” of nearby habitats! Meet at
the Open Air Chapel, or at the main bath house if it’s raining.
9:00 PM PLANTS & POLLINATORS – Enjoy a slide-illustrated talk on native
wildflowers, and the “busy bugs” who help them thrive. After the slide
show, we’ll have a “help the pollinators” contest for the children! Meet at
the Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it’s raining.
WEDNESDAY AUGUST 5
9:00 AM HIKE PAW PAW CREEK – Come hike a remote wetland trail. Discover
the amazing natural diversity in these lush green woods. Meet at the
Mountain Bike Trail parking lot. Be sure to wear good hiking footwear.

10:00 AM “SHOOT” NATURE’S FINEST – Photographs are a perfect way to
preserve memories of beautiful outdoor places. Find out how to use even
the simplest camera as a way of conserving natural memories. Bring your
camera to the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

12 NOON WATER’S EDGE – Discover more about the animals and plants who live
each day “on the edge!” Meet at the camp store. (Please preregister for
2:00 PM SOIL STUDIES – It’s not just plain old “dirt!” Come “dig into” some new
discoveries about the soil beneath our feet. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.

4:00 PM CREEK WALK – Get on your old clothes and tennis shoes. It’s time to explore
the cool, clear creek waters. We’ll discover a world of amazing life. Drive to the
camp store, and we’ll caravan. Be prepared to get wet! (Please preregister for
8:30 PM MYSTERIOUS MUSHROOMS – These mysterious organisms hold amazing
secrets. Discover the hidden world of mushrooms in this slide-illustrated talk.

THURSDAY AUGUST 6
8:00 AM BIRDING BY EAR – “Listen in” to the voices of our feathered neighbors. Bird
songs are more than just pretty music! Join us as we enjoy to the morning “bird
concert,” and learn to recognize the songs and calls of our common East
Tennessee birds. Bring your ears and your curiosity to the Duck Island Kiosk
(between the parking lot and the recreation building)

10:00 AM FUNGUS FUN – Discover the fungus among us! Be a mushroom detective as we
search for some fungal friends. Meet at the main bath house. (Please
preregister for this activity.)
2:00 PM PLANT DEFENSES – They don’t look too stressed, but even plants have their
troubles! Find out how our green neighbors deal with the troubles of life. Meet at
the Open Air Chapel to begin our short walk.
4:00 PM LEAF PRINTS – “Ordinary” leaves come in such extraordinary shapes and
textures. We can capture these patterns with ink and paper. Come make a leaf
souvenir at the main bath house.
6:00 PM MEET THE OWL – Meet a REAL LIVE feathered hunter, and learn his
fascinating life story. One of our “Wildlife Ambassadors” will be at the Open Air
Chapel so that you can have a chance to MEET THE OWL. (In case of rain, meet
at the main bath house.)
8:30 PM NIGHT HIKE TO SINKING WATERS – It’s a whole different world out there
at night! Tonight is our chance to discover the peace and the excitement of a
night in the Sinking Waters wetland. Bring a dim flashlight and drive to the
camp store. We’ll caravan out to the park back country. (Please preregister
for this hike.)
FRIDAY, AUGUST 7
9:00 AM HIKE THE BONEYARD – Come explore a remote corner of Warriors’ Path, full
of nature discovery. This will be a challenging 2-3 mile hike, so be sure to wear
comfortable clothes, good hiking shoes, and bring some drinking water. Meet at
the Mountain Bike Trail parking area. (Please preregister for this hike).
10:30 AM NOSING FOR NATURE – Nature is full of amazing aromas – some things
smell great, and some smell terrible! Let’s use our noses to “sniff out” some new
discoveries. Meet at the Main Bath House.
2:30 PM HIKE LAKE SHORE – Enjoy a leisurely hike through the Lake Shore Trail,
and explore some of the unique habitats our animal neighbors call home. Meet
at the camp store. (Please preregister for this hike.)
5:00 PM NATURE GAMES – Don’t miss the natural fun – for the young or the young-at-
heart! Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively games about our natural
world. If it’s raining, meet at the main bath house.
8:30 PM TENNESSEE TALES – Enjoy new insights into Tennessee Folklife as we share
some good-old traditional tall tales. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or pool
entrance if it rains.
SATURDAY, AUGUST 8
9:00 AM DEVIL’S BACKBONE HIKE -Come hike to the high places, and get some new
views of our park land. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll caravan to the start of
an invigorating hike. (Please preregister for this hike.)
10:30 AM DREAM CATCHERS – Let’s make these “catchy” little decorations, inspired by
Native American craft. Meet at the main bath house.
2:00 PM CRITTER PATHS – Be a critter detective! Find out what’s been wandering
through the campground habitats. Meet at the camp store.
4:00 PM JUNIOR RANGERS: TRAIL CLEANUP – Make our park a cleaner, healthier
environment! You’ll make a big difference for our earth, and begin to earn your
Junior Ranger badge. Meet at the main bath house. Be prepared to get dirty!
6:30 PM TURTLE TALK – Meet some real, live “shelled friends” and find out more about
their amazing lives. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is
8:30 PM CAMPFIRE – What a great combination: A dark night, a bright fire, and some
traditional riddles. Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the main
campground. If it is raining, we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the pool
SUNDAY, AUGUST 9
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
