Warriors Path State Park: Summer in the Park

July 13, 2021 - July 18, 2021

TUESDAY, JULY 13
11:30 AM WASPS & HORNETS – Yes, they do sting if you bother them! But they
really are amazing when you get to know them, from a safe distance.
Let’s get a close, stingless look at these important, misunderstood park
critters. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
1:00 PM BEE’S KNEES – Sure bees make delicious honey, but what else do they
do? Find out why bees are so important and what they do for us. We’ll
even make our own little pet bees that won’t sting! Buzz over to the Open
Air Chapel or at the main bath house if it’s raining.

3:00 PM TRAVELING TRADERS – From beads to beans, our ancestors
depended on each other for supplies. Come find out about those who
traded goods along the Great Indian War and Trade Path. Then try
trading beads to make bracelets. We’ll supply the beads, you supply the
trading and crafting skills. Meet at the Open-Air Chapel, or main bath
house if it’s raining.

6:00 PM MAGNIFYING GLASS STROLL – Use your eyes and some handy little
magnifiers to get a close look at nature’s amazing details. Meet at the
main bath house to begin a short discovery walk.

9:00 PM PLANTS & POLLINATORS – Enjoy a slide-illustrated talk on native
wildflowers, and the “busy bugs” who help them thrive. Meet at the Open
Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it’s raining.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 14
9:30 AM WAKE UP WALK – Let’s wake up our senses to morning in the forest.

Meet at the main bath house for a refreshing morning walk.

11:30 AM SKULLS – NATURE’S TOOL BOX – Every animal carries along all the
tools it needs for survival! Come investigate some natural “tool boxes,”
and find out more about each animal’s job! Meet at the Open Air Chapel,
or main bath house if it is raining.

1:30 PM NATURE SCAVENGER HUNT – Do you have a sharp eye for nature?
Discover the natural wonders around us and see if you can find all the
items on the list! Meet at the Open Air Chapel.

3:00 PM “WACKY WET WEDNESDAY” – Let’s enjoy some kid-friendly water
play and learning activities. You might even get to soak the Park Ranger.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel – be prepared to get VERY WET!

6:00 PM EVENING BIRD WALK – Evening is roosting time for most park birds.
Meet at the main bath house, and we’ll go see who is “getting ready for
bed” in the bird world.

NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified.

WEDNESDAY, CONTINUED
8:00 PM CAPTIVATING COYOTES – Lets have a howling good time as we discover
more about the “coy” coyote! Find out about coyote life stories and play a coyote
game too. Meet at the Open Air Chapel! If it’s raining, meet at the pool entrance

THURSDAY, JULY 15
9:00 AM HIKE THE “DARWIN’S REVENGE” TRAIL – It may have a very strange
name, but it is an awesome trail! Come spend several hours in one of the most
beautiful and wildest parts of the park. Be sure to wear good walking shoes,
comfortable clothes, and bring some drinking water. Meet at the Mountain Bike
Trail parking lot.

10:30 AM MEDICINAL PLANTS RAMBLE – Come see what plants our ancestors used

to cure their ills. Meet at the camp store and let’s walk on down.

12:30 PM TEA TIME – Enjoy an old-timey favorite – Sassafras tea! We’ll also “brew up”
some memories of the old days along the Warriors’ Path. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel (or main bath house if it is raining.)

2:30 PM NATURE WREATHS – We can use nature’s incredible patterns and textures to
create a beautiful decoration. Meet at the Open Air Chapel and bring your
creativity! In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.

4:00 PM FIELD SWEEP – This green world at our feet is teeming with amazing life.
Help us “sweep up” some field discoveries. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. or main
bath house if it’s raining.

7:00 PM MEET THE OWL – Meet a REAL LIVE feathered hunter, and learn his
fascinating life story. Come to the Open Air Chapel and see “whooo…” is waiting
for you. If it is raining, meet at the main bath house.

9:00 PM NIGHT SOUNDS – Nature is full of sounds when the sun goes down! Some
seem eerie, but there’s no need to be nervous. Come find out whose noise is
whose. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for a short slide show of the creatures who
“talk” in the night! (At the pool entrance if it is raining.)

FRIDAY, JULY 16
9:00 AM HIKE THE FAWN LOOP TRAIL – A trail designed for mountain bike
beginners is also a great place to begin to discover forest habitats! Meet at the
Mountain Bike parking lot to begin an easy woodland hike.

10:30 AM TREE TOUR – Trunk and branch, leaf and root, every part of a tree holds
fascinating discoveries. Come take a short walk among our woody friends. Meet
at the main bath house.

12 NOON CREEK WALK – Get on your old clothes and tennis shoes. It’s time to explore
the cool, clear creek waters. We’ll discover a world of amazing life. Drive to the
camp store, and we’ll carpool. Be prepared to get wet!

1:30 PM MEET YOUR FEATHERED NEIGHBORS – Learn how to use a field guide to
get to know the common birds of the park. Meet at the Open Air Chapel (main
bath house if it is raining).

3:30 PM CANDLEMAKING – We don’t need candles for light, like the early settlers did.
But we can enjoy the skill of making them. Come create a “bright memory” of the
early days. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

FRIDAY, CONTINUED
6:00 PM OLD TIMEY GAMES – Enjoy some good-old fun! Try some games from the
early settlement days of East Tennessee. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main
bath house if it’s raining.

9:00 PM TENNESSEE TALES – Enjoy new insights into Tennessee Folklife as we share
some good-old traditional tall tales. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or pool
entrance if it rains.

SATURDAY, JULY 17
9:30 AM DEVIL’S BACKBONE HIKE -Come hike to the high places, and get some new
views of our park land. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the start of
an invigorating hike.

11:00 AM WILDLIFE WALK – Let’s wander along the water’s edge and visit with the
forest life. You never know who might be “at home” in these shoreline woods!
Meet at the camp store.

1:00 PM 100 INCH HIKE – Especially for small, tired feet! Discover life on the tiny side.
This will also be a great chance to catch a critter for the races! Meet at the main
bath house.

1:30 PM CRITTER RACE FOR FREEDOM – Bring your best creepy crawler to the
main bath house. They’ll all win, because they’ll all get their freedom. No pets or
flying creatures please.

3:00 PM SEED RACES – Wind, water, and animals carry seeds of new trees and plants
all across the land. Our “wind” can help too! Meet at the Open Air Chapel to
show off your “hot air” and plant some new life. Meet at the main bath house if it
rains.

6:00 PM NATIVE POTTERY – With a bit of clay and a bit of creativity, we can create
some authentic-looking pottery. Meet at the Open Air Chapel to learn this
ancient skill. In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.

8:00 PM THE THREE SISTERS – Not my sisters, not your sisters, but these three
sisters were VERY important to the FIRST travelers along the Warriors’ Path.
Meet all three, and learn their story, at the Open Air Chapel (or pool entrance if
it’s raining).

SUNDAY, JULY 18
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
