Warriors Path State Park: Summer in the Park

June 13, 2022 - June 19, 2022

MONDAY, JUNE 13
6:00 PM CATTAIL CRAFTS – The early settlers along the Warriors’ Path
couldn’t afford to waste anything! Even old corn husks could become a
doll or toy. Instead of corn husks, we’ll use cattail plants. Meet at the
Open Air Chapel to try this twist on an old-timey craft. If it’s raining,
meet at the main bath house.

9:00 PM DISAPPEARING WILDLIFE – Some of the wild creatures that were
once found here in the park are gone forever. What happened to them?
How can we protect the wildlife we have left? Meet at the Open Air
Chapel for some extinction discovery. In case of rain, meet at the pool
entrance.
TUESDAY, JUNE 14
9:30 AM EDIBLE PLANTS RAMBLE – Are they weeds or are they dinner?
Learn to make a salad from lawn plants. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.
1:00 PM SPIDERS – Come discover more about our eight-legged neighbors! These
tiny web-spinners have some incredible stories to tell. Meet at the main
bath house.

3:30 PM BEACH SEARCH – The lakeshore is full of tiny beaches, full of signs of
wildlife and clues to the people who once traveled here. Each wave brings
us new things to find! Meet at the main bath house to begin our natural
“treasure hunt.”

6:00 PM SEED RACES – Wind, water, and animals carry seeds of new trees and
plants all across the land. Our “wind” can help too! Meet at the Open Air
Chapel to show off your “hot air” and plant some new life. Meet at the
main bath house if it rains.

7:00 PM ENERGY CYCLES – The turtle shell may be empty, but where’s the
turtle? Discover how energy cycles through all living things on Earth,
and how those that are gone still contribute to the environment. Meet at
the Open-Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.

9:00 PM DRAGONFLIES – These fascinating insects have some amazing life
stories to tell. Come enjoy a slide-illustrated talk about these “bugs” that
zip through the summer skies. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or the pool
entrance if it’s raining.

NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified.

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 15
9:30 AM LAKE SHORE ROUNDUP – We can help wildlife, and clean up their home at
the same time! If they could talk, the critters would say “THANK YOU!!” Meet
at the main bath house.

3:00 PM RIPARIAN RETREAT – Riparian means along the creek bank! Come along for
a cool hike near Fall Creek, on the far side of the Devil’s Backbone. Drive to the
camp store, and we’ll carpool.

6:00 PM TAG – You’re it! You’re the one we need to make all these great tag games work.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel for all kinds of tag games. If it is raining, meet at
the main bath house.

7:00 PM TREE TOUR – Trunk and branch, leaf and root, every part of a tree holds
fascinating discoveries. Come take a short walk among our woody friends. Meet
at the main bath house.

9:00 PM ID THE TREE – “Wood” you like to know what tree you are camping under?
You don’t want to “leaf” the park without finding out! Meet at the Open Air
Chapel, and we’ll learn some local trees together. (In case of rain, meet at the
pool entrance.)
THURSDAY, JUNE 16
9:30 AM NATIVE TREES HIKE – Come hike under our native trees, and get to know

them a bit better. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.

11:00 AM BIKE RIDE TO SHIPLEY CEMETERY -Long years before this was a park, it
was the Shipley family farm. As we visit their family cemetery, and the green
hills beyond, we can get a better feeling for their land and their lives. Pedal on
down to the camp store. Note that ALL riders MUST wear a bicycle helmet.
Children 10 or under must be accompanied by an adult!

2:00 PM LEATHER CRAFTS – Create your own custom-made keychain or bracelet!
Meet at the main bath house to design your leather souvenir.(Limit of one per
person).

4:00 PM NATURE GAMES – Don’t miss the natural fun – for the young or the young-at-
heart! Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively games about our natural

world. If it’s raining, meet at the main bath house.

5:00 PM SKULLS – NATURE’S TOOL BOX – Every animal carries along all the tools it
needs for survival! Come investigate some natural “tool boxes,” and find out
more about each animal’s job! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house
if it is raining.

7:00 PM BIRDS OF PREY – Meet some real live feathered hunters. Come to the Open
Air Chapel and see “whooo…” is waiting for you. If it is raining, meet at the main
bath house.

9:00 PM NIGHT HIKE TO SINKING WATERS – It’s a whole different world out there
at night! Tonight is our chance to discover the peace and the excitement of a
night in the Sinking Waters wetland. Bring a dim flashlight and drive to the
camp store. We’ll carpool out to the park back country.

FRIDAY, JUNE 17
9:30 AM SINKING WATERS RIDGE HIKE – Explore succession – the changing face of
nature – on the first loop of the Sinking Waters Trail. We’ll discover the
woodlands changing all around us! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to
the start of the trail.

11:00 AM RECYCLING 101 – We all know that recycling is good for the earth, and good
for us too! Come find out more about some easy ways to keep our park, and our
planet, a green healthy place. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house
if it is raining.

12:30 PM PLANKTON – For us, the lake is a place to go boating or fishing. But for the
micro-world of plankton, it’s a home. Come help us sample this incredible world
of tiny lives floating in lake water. Meet at the main bath house, and we’ll stroll
on down to the shore.

3:00 PM SPOTLIGHT WALK – Let’s shine our light on some bright natural discoveries.

Meet at the camp store to begin a short, sunlit walk.

5:00 PM NATURE CRAFTS – You can make a friend! Create your own creatures using
natural materials. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or the main bath house if it is
raining.

7:00 PM AMPHIBIAN “ATTACK” – Let’s search for our slippery friends! We’ll “hunt”
for frogs, toads and salamanders, and discover more about their amazing,
changing lives. Meet at the campground boat ramp.

9:00 PM APPALACHIAN “ENGLISHES” – Ever wonder where an accent comes from?
Well, wander on down to the Open Air Chapel to find out how our landscape
changes the way we speak. (In case of rain, meet at the pool entrance).

SATURDAY, JUNE 18
SPECIAL EVENT TODAY – DRAGONFLY DAY – SEE POSTERS FOR DETAILS

9:30 AM PAW PAW PATROL – Have you heard of Paw Paw trees? Let’s go “way down
yonder to the Paw Paw patch!” We’ll discover more about this amazing native
fruit tree. Join the “Paw Paw Patrol” along the trail. Meet at the camp store.
11:30 AM FIELD HABITAT WATCH – This green grassy world is full of amazing life.

Help us search for some field discoveries. Meet at the camp store.

2:00 PM JUNIOR RANGERS: THE INCREDIBLE JOURNEY OF WATER – Do you
know where your water comes from? This activity combines beadwork with a
dice game that allows you to create a beautiful bracelet of where your water has
traveled! Meet at the main bathhouse.

5:30 PM BIKE HIKE TO THE OVERLOOK -Let’s travel together, on bicycle and on
foot, to search for signs of the people and the wildlife that have traveled here.
Pedal on down to the camp store. Note that ALL riders MUST wear a bicycle
helmet. Children 10 or under must be accompanied by an adult!

9:00 PM CAMPFIRE – What a perfect combination: A dark night, a crackling fire, and
some local, traditional ghost tales. Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the
main campground. If it is raining, we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the pool
entrance.

SUNDAY, JUNE 19
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
