Warriors Path State Park: Summer in the Park

MONDAY, JULY 25
4:00 PM POISON IVY – Don’t let fear of a little itch keep you out of the lovely
summer woods! Learn to be safe around this “sneaky” plant. Meet at the
Open Air chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.
6:00 PM TURTLE TALK – Meet one of our real, live “shelled friends” and find out
more about their amazing lives. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main
bath house if it is raining.
8:00 PM FOLK MEDICINE – How did folks deal with their ills before there were
pharmacies or doctors? Our Appalachian region is rich in tradition,
including the tradition of folk medicine. Do you know some traditional
medicines or healing methods passed on to you. We would love to listen
and learn! Children come to listen, and adults come to share your family
traditions. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it’s raining.
TUESDAY JULY 26
9:00 AM FALL CREEK LOOP TRAIL -Let’s hike the park’s most scenic trail!
Enjoy beautiful vistas of the summer fields, as we search for signs of the
unique habitats in the open country. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll
carpool to the start of a two hour hike.
11:00 AM FLYWAYS & BYWAYS – Meet at the Open Air Chapel to discover more
about the creatures that WING their way through the Warriors’ Path. In
case of rain, meet at the main bath house.
1:00 PM BIKE HIKE TO THE OVERLOOK -Let’s travel together, on bicycle and
on foot, to search for signs of the people and wildlife that have traveled
here. Pedal on down to the camp store. Note that ALL riders MUST wear
a bicycle helmet. Children 10 or under must be accompanied by an adult!
3:00 PM FERN “FRONDLING” – Make friends with some of the local ferns and
their relatives. Meet at the main bath house.
4:00 PM MYSTERY BAG – Try your hand at discovering some natural textures.
See if you can guess which natural object is which. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel, or the main bath house if it is raining.
5:00 PM LEAF ART – Explore the artistic side of nature as we make leaf rubbings
and decorate frames for our artwork! Meet at the main bath house. We’ll
supply the materials, you supply the creative fingers
7:00 PM MEET THE OWL – Meet a REAL LIVE feathered hunter, and learn his
fascinating life story. Come to the Open Air Chapel and see “whooo…” is
waiting for you. If it is raining, meet at the main bath house.

9:00 PM NIGHT HIKE TO SINKING WATERS – It’s a whole different world out there
at night! Tonight is our chance to discover the peace and the excitement of a
night in the Sinking Waters wetland. Bring a dim flashlight and drive to the
camp store. We’ll caravan to the back country.
WEDNESDAY JULY 27
9:30 AM WAKE UP WALK – Let’s wake up our senses to morning in the forest. Meet at
the main bath house for a refreshing morning walk.
11:30 AM CREEK WALK – Get on your old clothes and tennis shoes. It’s time to explore
the cool, clear creek waters. We’ll discover a world of amazing life. Drive to the
camp store, and we’ll carpool. Be prepared to get wet!
3:00 PM “WONDERFUL WACKY WET WEDNESDAY” – Let’s enjoy some kid-friendly
water play and learning activities. You might even get to soak the Park Ranger.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel and be prepared to get VERY WET!
4:30 PM BIKE RIDE TO SHIPLEY CEMETERY -Long years before this was a park, it
was the Shipley family farm. As we visit their family cemetery, and the green
hills beyond, we can get a better feeling for their land and their lives. Pedal on
down to the camp store. Note that ALL riders MUST wear a bicycle helmet.
Children 10 or under must be accompanied by an adult!
7:00 PM EVENING STROLL – Let’s wake up our senses to evening in the forest. Meet
at the main bath house for a short, refreshing hike.
8:30 PM SPIDERS – Enjoy a photo-illustrated journey through spider country. Get a
close look at these amazing creatures, from the comfort of your seat. Meet at the
Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it’s raining.
THURSDAY JULY 28
9:30 AM THE LOST TRACK – Our park is tied to history through the rails! Let’s hike
the old railroad grade, and hear the stories of these old railroaders’ lives. Meet
at the camp store.
11:00 AM GEOLOGY HIKE – Enjoy a hike across the rocky landscape, and learn to read
the stories in stones. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, and we’ll walk on over to the
1:00 PM MEET THE SNAKES – They’re not the fearsome creatures you’ve been led to
believe! Come out and learn the facts about these interesting and helpful
animals. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.
2:00 PM SUSTAINABILITY 101 – We all know recycling and conserving resources is
good for the Earth, and good for us too! Come find out more about sustainability
and easy ways to keep our park, and our planet, a green healthy place. Meet at
the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.
5:00 PM CRITTER PATHS – Be a critter detective! Find out what’s been wandering
through the campground habitats. Meet at the camp store.
6:00 PM TRAVELING TRADERS – From beads to beans, our ancestors depended on
each other for supplies. Come find out about those who traded goods along the
Great Indian War and Trade Path. Then try trading beads to make bracelets.
We’ll supply the beads, you supply the trading and crafting skills. Meet at the
Open-Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.

7:00 PM SKULLS – NATURE’S TOOL BOX – Every animal carries all the tools it needs
for survival! Investigate some natural “tool boxes,” and find out more about each
animal’s job! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
9:00 PM TENNESSEE SEASONS – Enjoy a tour of all four seasons in the hills of
Tennessee. With words and pictures, we will experience the excitement of year-
round discovery. After the photo tour, one of our “Wildlife Ambassadors” will
share a lesson on Wildlife Tracking and reading “Critter Signs.” Meet at the
Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it is raining.
FRIDAY, JULY 29
9:00 AM SINKING WATERS RIDGE HIKE – Explore succession – the changing face of
nature – on the first loop of the Sinking Waters Trail. We’ll discover the
woodlands changing all around us! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to
the start of the trail.
11:00 AM LIVING DOWNSTREAM – We are all downstream of the earth’s resources.
Let’s “build” a small community along a “river” and find out how we impact the
world downstream of us. Wander on down to the main bath house, and bring
along your ideas for your dream house or business.
1:00 PM LAKE SHORE ROUNDUP – We can help wildlife, and clean up their home at
the same time! If they could talk, the critters would say “THANK YOU!!” Meet
at the main bath house.
2:30 PM WOOD COOKIES – Peek inside a tree and you’ll find nature and history. Come
decorate a wood “cookie” and take home a natural memory from Warriors Path.
Bring your artistic skills to the main bathhouse.
4:00 PM TENNESSEE SYMBOLS “JEOPARDY” – Let’s try out this natural version of
the famous game show. Test your skills and see how much you REALLY know
about our state. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
5:00 PM WEAVING – Learn the ancient art of turning fiber into cloth. Meet at the Open
Air Chapel and see how creative you can be! In case of rain, meet at the main
6:00 PM FIELD HABITAT WATCH – This green grassy world is full of amazing life.
Help us search for some field discoveries. Meet at the camp store.
7:00 PM OLD TIMEY GAMES – Enjoy some good-old fun! Try some games from the
early settlement days of East Tennessee. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main
bath house if it’s raining.
9:00 PM CAMPFIRE – What a perfect combination: A dark night, a crackling fire, and
some local, traditional ghost tales. Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the
main campground. If it is raining, we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the pool

SATURDAY, JULY 30
9:00 AM HIKE PAW PAW CREEK – Come hike a remote wetland trail. Discover the
amazing natural diversity in these lush green woods. Meet at the Mountain Bike
Trail parking lot (at the end of Freeman Rd, Blountville TN). Be sure to wear
good hiking footwear.
11:00 AM THE LONG HUNT – What was life like for the FIRST travelers along the
Warriors’ Path? Come see how difficult it was for the Native Peoples to hunt for
food. Meet at the camp store.
1:00 PM MAGNIFYING GLASS STROLL – Use your eyes and some handy little
magnifiers to get a close look at nature’s amazing details. Meet at the main bath
house to begin a short discovery walk.
2:00 PM MIS-IDENTIFICATION – Come discover the TRUTH about more about some
of our park’s most misunderstood and mis-identified animals. Meet at the Open
Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.
3:00 PM NOISY TOYS – How did the pioneer children make music or noise? Make your
very own “musical” instrument with a few simple things from nature. Meet at
the Open Air Chapel to create some “beautiful music.” In case of rain, meet at
the main bath house.
4:00 PM LEAVE NO TRACE – We can enjoy the wilderness, and leave the land as
beautiful as it was. Find out how to camp and hike, and leave no signs of your
presence. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
5:00 PM CORN HUSK CRAFTS – The early settlers along the Warriors’ Path couldn’t
afford to waste anything! Even old corn husks could become a doll or toy. Meet
at the Open Air Chapel to try this old-timey craft. If it’s raining, meet at the
main bath house.
7:00 PM BOAT FLOAT – Are you ready to sail across ponds and puddles? Meet at the
Open Air Chapel to build your own bark boat. Then we’ll stroll on down to the
shore and watch them set sail. In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.
9:00 PM APPALACHIAN “ENGLISHES” – Ever wonder where an accent comes from?
Well, wander on down to the Open Air Chapel to find out how our landscape
changes the way we speak. (In case of rain, meet at the pool entrance).
SUNDAY, JULY 31
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
