Warriors Path State Park: Summer in the Park

July 29, 2024 - August 4, 2024

MONDAY JULY 29
4:30 PM NATURE STORY TIME – Come relax under a big shade tree during the
heat of the day and enjoy a story about the natural world around us. Meet
at the the main bathhouse.

6:30 PM TENNESSEE TRIVIA – Come test out your skills and see how well you
REALLY know our state. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath
house if it is raining.

9:00 PM CAMPFIRE TALES – A dark night, a crackling fire, and some old local
tales. Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the main campground. In
case of rain, meet at the main bath house.

TUESDAY JULY 30
9:00 AM LEAF ID BOOKLET – Leaves are shade on a hot, summer day. Leaves
are the green carpet of the hills. Leaves are full of amazing stories! Let’s
find out more about the names and stories of our green neighbors. Meet at
the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.

10:30 AM FINGER WEAVING – Our ancestors had looms for weaving. We may not
have looms, but if you “give us a hand,” we can show you another way to
weave. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
11:30 AM BACKYARD BIRD SEARCH – What birds are hanging out all around
us? Come find some common birds of Tennessee through a fun scavenger
hunt. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.

1:30 PM DIY BIRD FEEDER – Do you love birds? Want to see more in your yard?
Come to the Open Air Chapel to create your own DIY bird feeder. In case
of rain, meet at the main bath house.

2:30 PM WEATHER OR NOT – People have always wondered about the weather,
especially what kind of weather is coming. Come share some old-timey
weather folklore, and some modern day wisdom. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

3:30 PM BIRD CALL BINGO – Which bird song is that? Let’s “listen in” to some
common Tennessee bird calls, then test our knowledge through a classic
game of bingo. Meet at the main bath house.

6:00 PM TREE TOOLS – How big is that tree? How old is it? What wildlife could
be hiding in it? Try some tools that foresters use to study and protect our
native trees. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, main bath house if it’s raining.
9:00 PM NATIVE TREES – Enjoy a slide-illustrated talk on our native “woody
neighbors.” Come meet some of our oldest and best natural friends. Meet
at the Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it is raining.

NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified.

WEDNESDAY JULY 31
9:30 AM CREEK WALK – Get on your old clothes and tennis shoes. It’s time to explore
the cool, clear creek waters. We’ll discover a world of amazing life. Drive to the
camp store, and we’ll carpool. Be prepared to get wet!

10:30 AM WAKE UP AND SMELL THE PAW PAW – Curious about Paw Paw? Join us
for a quick walk and we will explore a patch of paw paw together and maybe
even smell them. Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the main campground.
1:00 PM ANIMAL MASKS – What can you be? A wolf? A bear? A kitten? Or maybe a
creature you design yourself! Bring your imagination to the main bathhouse.
2:00 PM PLANKTON – For us, the lake is a place to go boating or fishing. But for the
micro-world of plankton, it’s a home. Come help us sample this incredible world
of tiny lives floating in lake water. Meet at the main bath house, and we’ll stroll
on down to the shore.

3:00 PM TURTLE TALK – Some creatures build their homes, others find them, and
some are lucky enough to have them built in. Come learn about the turtles of
East Tennessee and their special features they have built in! And maybe even
meet a shelled friend! Meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at the
main bath house.

4:00 PM “WONDERFUL WACKY WET WEDNESDAY” – Let’s enjoy some kid-friendly
water play and learning activities. You might even get to soak the Park Ranger.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel and be prepared to get VERY WET!

5:30 PM WHO AM I? – Let’s play a game of 20 questions with a natural twist! Meet at

the Open Air Chapel, or the main bath house if it is raining.

7:00 PM CHALK CRITTERS – What’s at home here? Decorate the park with sketches of

park wildlife “at home” in their habitats. Meet at the main bath house.

9:00 PM CANDLE MAKING – We don’t need candles for light, like the early settlers did.
But we can enjoy the skill of making them. Come create a “bright memory” of
the early days. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

THURSDAY AUGUST 1
9:30 AM SINKING WATERS RIDGE HIKE – Explore succession – the changing face of
nature – on the first loop of the Sinking Waters Trail. We’ll discover the
woodlands changing all around us! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to
the start of the trail.

11:30 AM RELAY RACES – Join us for a fun nature-themed relay race where we will get
to know our trees on a deeper level. Wear sturdy footwear and be prepared to
run! Meet at the Open Air Chapel.

1:00 PM POISON IVY – Don’t let fear of a little itch keep you out of the lovely summer
woods! Learn to be safe around this “sneaky” plant. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.

2:00 PM OLD SCHOOL PAINTING – Let’s take a step into the past and create a work
of art using the nature around us for tools. Meet at the Open Air Chapel. In case
of rain, meet at the main bath house.

3:30 PM BEAN ART – Nature is full of amazing colors and patterns. Even ordinary dry
beans can help us see the beauty of the earth. Meet at the main bath house to
create natural art from beans!

THURSDAY, CONTINUED
4:30 PM HIKE LAKE HOLLOW – Enjoy a leisurely hike through the Lake Hollow Trail

and explore some of the unique life around us. Meet at the Camp Store.
6:00 PM NOISY TOYS – How did the pioneer children make music or noise? Make your
very own “musical” instrument with a few simple things from nature. Meet at
the Open Air Chapel to create some “beautiful music.” In case of rain, meet at
the main bath house.

7:30 PM ANIMAL TRACK DRAWING – Learn to track down local wildlife. Use your
creative skills at the same time! Your unique design is only a “footstep” away.
Meet at the main bath house.

9:00 PM NIGHT SOUNDS – Nature is full of sounds when the sun goes down! Some
seem eerie, but there’s no need to be nervous. Come find out whose noise is
whose. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for a short slide show of the creatures who
“talk” in the night! (At the pool entrance if it is raining.) NOTE – there will be a
special NIGHT SOUNDS contest for children after the show.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 2
9:00 AM HIKE THE “DARWIN’S REVENGE” TRAIL – It may have a very strange
name, but it is an awesome trail! Come spend several hours in one of the most
beautiful and wildest parts of the park. Be sure to wear good walking shoes,
comfortable clothes, and bring some drinking water. Meet at the park’s
Mountain Bike Trail parking lot (at the end of Freeman Road, Blountville TN)
10:30 AM TENNESSEE SYMBOLS WALK – Join us on a short hike to discover some of
the Tennessee State Symbols here at the park! Meet at the main bath house.
11:30 AM MAKE A SUNDIAL – Now is the perfect time to find out how to use our earth’s
oldest clock! Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some bright discoveries, or main
bath house if it’s raining.

1:30 PM HIKE THE OVERLOOK TRAIL – Take hike to the Overlook and look at our
world from a different perspective. Don’t forget your camera! Meet at the old
pool parking lot and we will carpool or caravan to the trail head together.
3:00 PM BACKPACKING – Have you ever wanted to spend more than just a day in the
backcountry? Here’s your chance to gain advice on how to begin your overnight
expeditions. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or the main bath house if it is
raining.

4:00 PM SINKING WATERS HIKE – Take a hike to explore the wonders of a wetland
habitat, and all that the water in our park has to offer. Meet at the Sinking
Waters Trail parking lot on Cedar Branch Rd. Program Lead – Courtney.

5:00 PM CAMPGROUND CLEAN UP – Want to help the wildlife of East Tennessee and
have fun at the same time? Join us for a litter walk around the campground and
help us clean up for the wildlife. If the critters could talk, they would say “Thank
you!” Meet at the camp store.

6:00 PM OLD TIMEY GAMES – Enjoy some good-old fun! Try some games from the
early settlement days of East Tennessee. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main
bath house if it’s raining.

9:00 PM TENNESSEE TALES – Enjoy new insights into Tennessee Folklife as we share
some good-old traditional tall tales. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or pool
entrance if it rains.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 3
9:00 AM FALL CREEK LOOP TRAIL -Let’s hike the park’s most scenic trail! Enjoy
beautiful vistas of the summer fields, as we search for signs of the unique
habitats in the open country. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the
start of a two hour hike.

12 NOON WALKING TREES, FLYING PLANTS – Wind, water, and animals carry seeds
of new trees and plants all across the land. Our “wind” can help too! Meet at the
Open Air Chapel to show off your “hot air” and plant some new life. Meet at the
main bath house if it rains.

3:00 PM NOSING FOR NATURE – Nature is full of amazing aromas – some things
smell great, and some smell terrible! Let’s use our noses to “sniff out” some new
discoveries. Meet at the Main Bath House.

4:30 PM BUILD A BUTTERFLY – Create your own paper butterfly, and discover more

about these winged wonders! Meet at the main bath house.

7:00 PM ANIMAL CHARADES – An old favorite with a new twist! See who can act out
the best critter. Meet at the Open Air Chapel or main bath house if it is raining.
9:00 PM NIGHT VISION – How does night vision work? Meet at the Campfire Circle to

“look into” this amazing tool for us, and for our nocturnal neighbors.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 4
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
