Warrior’s Path: Summer in the Park

Welcome to Warriors’ Path State Park!
We hope you will enjoy
your visit! While you are with us, we invite you to take advantage of
the rich natural beauty and wealth of opportunities for enjoyable
recreation here at the park.
NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified.
TUESDAY, JULY 17
11:30 AM
STAINED “GLASS” ANIMALS –
Meet at the main bath house to create
your own amazing “stained glass” animals! They
look
like glass, but they
won’t
break
like glass, since they’re made of tissue paper! Bring your
creativity, we’ll bring the supplies.
2:00 PM
PADDLEBOAT EXPLORERS –
Explore Duck Island from the water!
We’ll be paddle boating, so be prepared to get wet. Meet at the camp
store, and we’ll carpool to the marina. NOTES: You
must
sign up
in
advance
at the camp store, since space is limited. There will be a small
fee. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult, and anyone
under 18 must have an adult to sign a release form.
5:00 PM
LAKE SHORE TRASH BASH
– Make our park a cleaner, healthier
environment! You’ll make a big difference for our earth, and for each of
us who lives on the earth. Meet at the main bath house. Be prepared to
get dirty!
7:00 PM
BIRDS OF PREY
– Meet some real live feathered hunters. Come to the
Open Air Chapel and see “whooo…” is waiting for you. If it is raining,
meet at the main bath house.
9:00 PM
LAMP-LIT NIGHT HIKE –
Take a “de-light-full” hike through the dark
forest. We’ll light up the trail with old-timey kerosene lanterns, and
discover a “new world” of life after dark. We’ll supply the lanterns, but
children should bring flashlights instead for safety. Drive to the camp
store and we’ll carpool out to the park back country.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 18
8:00 AM
YOGA –
Leave your troubles behind. Let’s clear our minds with some
relaxing stretches and breathing exercises. Bring your yoga mat or
blanket to the Open Air Chapel (or main bath house if it’s raining).
10:30 AM
WONDERFUL WILDFLOWERS WALK –
Early summer is a perfect
time for blooming things! Come for a hike among the beautiful
wildflowers of the park. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.
1:00 PM
RIVERBANK STROLL
-This green river valley has seen generations of
travelers. Let’s travel together, and search for signs of the wildlife and
the people who came before us. Meet at the main bath house.
3:00 PM
SEED RACES
– Wind, water, and animals carry seeds of new trees and
plants all across the land. Our “wind” can help too! Meet at the Open Air
Chapel to show off your “hot air” and plant some new life. Meet at the
main bath house if it rains
WEDNESDAY, CONTINUED
4:00 PM
PLANKTON
– For us, the lake is a place to go boating or fishing. But for the
micro-world of plankton, it’s a home. Come help us sample this incredible world
of tiny lives floating in lake water. Meet at the main bath house, and we’ll stroll
on down to the shore.
7:00 PM
SCENIC WALK –
We can’t take the park home with us, but we can preserve
some special scenes with our cameras. Come “snap” some memories of YOUR
state park. Meet at the camp store, and we’ll carpool to the start of the trail.
9:00 PM
NIGHT VISION –
Come find out who has great night vision and we’ll even test
out our own. Meet at the Open Air Chapel (or if pool entrance if it’s raining)
THURSDAY, JULY 19
9:30 AM
WAKE UP WALK
– Let’s wake up our senses to morning in the forest. Meet at
the main bath house for a refreshing morning walk.
11:30 AM
BIKE HIKE TO THE OVERLOOK
-Let’s travel together, on bicycle and on
foot, to search for signs of the people and the wildlife that have traveled here.
Pedal on down to the camp store. Note that ALL riders MUST wear a bicycle
helmet. Children 10 or under must be accompanied by an adult!
1:00 PM
TRACKING
– Find out how to be a “wildlife detective” – how to read the tracks,
dens, and other signs of our fellow creatures. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or
main bath house if it is raining.
3:00 PM
LAZY HAZY HIKE –
Beat the heat on a cool, leisurely hike through the shady
woods. Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.
5:00 PM
FRISBEE GAMES
– How far, how fast or how accurately can you make the
plastic disks fly? Come have a flying good time! Meet at the Open Air Chapel.
We have plenty of extra frisbees!
7:00 PM
NATURE ART
– You’ll be amazed at how creative you can be with nature’s own
“crayons”. Meet at the Open Air Chapel to create your own natural masterpiece.
If it is raining, meet at the main bath house.
9:00 PM
NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY –
We all love taking pictures – especially on
vacation! And photographs are a perfect way to preserve memories of beautiful
outdoor places. Find out how to use even the simplest camera as a way to
conserve natural memories. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for a slide-illustrated
nature photography “lesson.” In case of rain, meet at the pool entrance.
FRIDAY, JULY 20
9:30 AM
NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY WALK –
Come practice your camera skills, or just
come to enjoy the natural beauty. Bring your camera if you have one, and drive
to the camp store. We’ll carpool to the start of our walk. We might even have a
few extra cameras along, if you’d like to borrow one!
11:00 AM
LEATHER CRAFTS
– Create your own custom-made keychain or bracelet!
Meet at the main bath house to design your leather souvenir.(Limit of one per
person).
1:00 PM
MAGNIFYING GLASS HIKE
– Use your eyes and some handy little magnifiers
to get a close look at nature’s amazing details. Meet at the main bath house to
begin a short discovery walk.
FRIDAY, CONTINUED
3:00 PM
WATERMELON SEEDS –
Come enjoy a fresh summer treat and show off your
seed spitting skills. Meet at the main bathhouse for a friendly and delicious
completion!
5:00 PM
EVENING STROLL
– Let’s wake up our senses to evening in the forest. Meet at
the main bath house for a short, refreshing hike.
7:00 PM
OLD TIMEY GAMES
– Enjoy some good-old fun! Try some games from the
early settlement days of East Tennessee. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main
bath house if it’s raining.
9:00 PM
TENNESSEE TALES
– Enjoy a slide-illustrated talk on Tennessee Folklife, and
then share some good-old traditional tall tales. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or
pool entrance if it rains.
SATURDAY, JULY 21
9:30 AM
SINKING WATERS RIDGE HIKE –
Explore succession – the changing face of
nature – on the first loop of the Sinking Waters Trail. We’ll discover the
woodlands changing all around us! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll carpool.
1:00 PM
MICRO-PARKS
– Here’s your chance to plan and share your own nature park.
You might even get “paid” by your “customers”! Bring your best park managing
skills to the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
3:00 PM
CREEK WALK
– Get on your old clothes and tennis shoes. It’s time to explore
the cool, clear creek waters. We’ll discover a world of amazing life. Drive to the
camp store, and we’ll carpool. Be prepared to get wet!
5:00 PM
LEAF HIKE –
Leaves are shade on a hot summer day. Leaves are the green
carpet of the hills. Leaves are full of amazing stories! Let’s walk under the
leaves, and listen in. Meet at the main bath house to start a shore hike.
7:00 PM
ANIMAL MASKS
– What can you be? A wolf? A bear? A kitten? Or maybe a
creature you design yourself! Bring your imagination to the main bath house.
9:00 PM
CRITTER CAMPFIRE
– What a great combination: A dark night, a bright fire,
and some exciting animal tales. If you made a mask with us at 7:00, be sure to
bring it to the campfire! Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the main
campground. If it is raining, we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the pool entrance.
SUNDAY, JULY 22
9:00 AM
WORSHIP SERVICE
– Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
