Warrior’s Path: Summer in the Park

May 29, 2018 - June 2, 2018

Welcome to Warriors’ Path State Park! We hope you will enjoy your visit! While you are with us, we invite you to take advantage of the rich natural beauty and wealth of opportunities for enjoyable recreation here at the park.

NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified

TUESDAY, MAY 29
9:30 AM WAKE UP LAKE SHORE – It’s wake-up time on the Lake Shore
Trail! Meet at the main bathhouse for a refreshing morning stroll.
3:00 PM CRITTER CONES – Pine cones aren’t critters! But we can use
them to create a critter. Bring one or two pine cones to the Open Air
Chapel, and find out how. If it’s raining, meet at the main bath
house.
5:00 PM TRACKING – Find out how to be a “wildlife detective” – how to read
the tracks, dens, and other signs of our fellow creatures. Meet at the
Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
7:00 PM MEET THE OWL – Meet a real live feathered hunter. Come to the
Open Air Chapel and see “whooo…” is waiting for you. If it is
raining, meet at the main bath house.
9:00 PM NIGHT HIKE TO SINKING WATERS – It’s a whole different
world out there at night! Tonight is our chance to discover the peace
and the excitement of a night in the Sinking Waters wetland. Bring
a dim flashlight and drive to the camp store. We’ll carpool out to the
park back country.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 30
9:30 AM BIRD’S EYE VIEW – Take a hike to the Overlook and look at our
world from a different perspective. Don’t forget your camera! Meet
at the camp store.
11:30 AM NATURE JOURNAL – Come create your own little “nature diary.”
Your home-made book will be a perfect way to remember all your
nature fun in the park! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or the main
bath house if it is raining.
3:00 PM WATER BALLOON VOLLEYBALL – What a great way to cool off!
Enjoy an exciting liquid game!! Meet at the campfire circle, east end
of the campground. (meet rain or shine – we’ll be wet anyway!)
5:00 PM NATURE GAMES – Don’t miss the natural fun – for the young or
the young-at-heart! Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively
games about our natural world. If it’s raining, meet at the main
bath house.

WEDNESDAY, CONTINUED:
7:00 PM WET WORLDS – For us, the lake is a place to go boating or fishing. But for
the micro-world of plankton, it’s a home. Come help us sample this
incredible world of tiny lives floating in lake water. Meet at the main bath
house, and we’ll stroll on down to the shore
9:00 PM DRAGONFLIES – These fascinating insects have some amazing life stories
to tell. Come enjoy a slide-illustrated talk about these “bugs” that zip
through the summer skies. Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or the pool
entrance if it’s raining.
THURSDAY, MAY 31
9:30 AM WETLAND WALK – Wetlands are wet, and full of life! Come along for a
soggy hike near Fall Creek, on the far side of the Devil’s Backbone. We
might even spot a few dragonflies! Drive to the camp store, and we’ll
carpool.
1:00 PM SPOTLIGHT STROLL – Let’s shine our light on some bright natural
discoveries. Meet at the camp store to begin a short, sunlit hike
3:00 PM TAG – You’re it! You’re the one we need to make all these great tag games
work. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for all kinds of tag games. If it is
raining, meet at the main bath house.
4:30 PM LICHENS – Come walk to discover some of our park’s most amazing
plants! You’ll really “take a liking” to them! Meet at the main bath house.
6:30 PM SUNSET HIKE – Watch the sun go down across the green hills. Relax to
the serenity of the evening. Meet at the benches behind the bath house at
the OVERFLOW CAMPGROUND for a short hike. Bring a flashlight for
the walk back.
9:00 PM BAT & MOTH – Use your ears and your “bug hunting” skills! See if you
could survive a night out in the woods and fields — if you were a flying bug!
Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it is raining.
FRIDAY, JUNE 1
11:30 PM PICNIC HIKE – Let’s “feed” our eyes and ears on park scenery, and then
feed ourselves a picnic lunch. Bring your bag lunch to the camp store, and
we’ll walk to the picnic area.
2:30 PM CREATE A FOREST – Here’s your chance to design your own woodland
habitat! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, and bring your ingenuity. We’ll
supply all the planning tools. If it is raining, meet at the main bath house.
4:00 PM PREDATOR/PREY – Explore the competition between hunter and hunted.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if is raining.
7:00 PM RIVERBANK STROLL -This green river valley has seen generations of
travelers. This evening, we’ll travel together, and search for signs of the
wildlife and the people who came before us. Meet at the camp store.
9:00 PM TENNESSEE WILDERNESS – Enjoy a slide-illustrated tour of
Tennessee’s wild, scenic places and the special values they hold. After the
slide show, well have a demonstration of how to read wildlife signs. Meet at
the Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it’s raining.
SATURDAY, JUNE 2 – NATIONAL TRAILS DAY
9:30 AM NATIONAL TRAILS DAY HIKE – Celebrate National Trails Day on a
great 4+ mile hike rich in nature discovery and local history. Discover
evidence of earlier travelers along the Warriors’ Path as we travel part of
an official National Recreational Trail! Be sure to come dressed for the
weather and for hiking over some rocky and uneven terrain. Wear good
walking shoes, and bring along some water and a snack. Meet at the
Warriors’ Path State Park mountain bike trail parking lot.
11:30 AM 100 INCH HIKE – How about a tiny hike for National Trails Day –
especially for small, tired feet! Discover life on the tiny side. This will also
be a great chance to catch a critter for the races! Meet at the main bath
house.
12 NOON CRITTER RACE FOR FREEDOM – Bring your best creepy crawler to the
main bath house. They’ll all win, because they’ll all get their freedom. No
pets or flying creatures please.
3:00 PM CREEK WALK – Here’s another chance to celebrate National Trails Day,
with a short hike IN the creek! Explore the cool, clear creek waters and
discover a world of amazing life. Wear old clothes and tennis shoes, drive to
the camp store, and we’ll carpool. Be prepared to get wet!
5:30 PM LEAVE NO TRACE – We can enjoy the wilderness, and leave the land as
beautiful as it was. Find out how to camp and hike, and leave no signs of
your presence. Meet at the campfire circle, or main bath house if it is
raining.
8:30 PM A WALK ON THE “WILD” SIDE – Let’s wander through the wild country,
and visit with the forest life. You never know who might be “at home” in
these wild woods! Meet at the camp store.
SUNDAY, JUNE 4
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the
Open Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the
Colonial Heights Baptist Church.
