Watauga Lake Sailing Club: 19th Annual Frostbite Race

It’s that time of year again! As sailors from Tri-Cities Tennessee, Western North Carolina, and Western Virginia gear up for their first race of the year! The Watauga Lake Sailing Club will hold its 19th Annual Frostbite Race on Tuesday Jan.1, at 12 noon. Typically 8 to 12 boat captains and their hardy crew participate in this race. According to Commodore Dave Gurysh; “The club has held the January 1st Frostbite Race every year since 2000 and the sailors have raced in everything from sunny 50 degree weather to blowing snow .” WLSC has been promoting the sport of sailing on Watauga Lake near Hampton, Tennessee for nearly 40 years. Commodore Gurysh indicated; “Although our next race isn’t until April, the Frostbite Race is our annual kick-off event and is well attended by our 80+ sail club members from all around the region.” WLSC welcomes the public to come out to Watauga Lakeshore Resort and Marina, Watauga Point State Recreation Area, or other nearby viewing areas to watch the race.
