Sangria, Slushies, and Scenery

If you take the time to tackle the winding hills of Johnson County, you’ll be treated to beautiful vistas, which includes Watauga Lake and breathtaking mountain views. Tucked inside one of those hills is Watauga Lake Winery.

This winery is Johnson County’s first and is located inside the former Big Dry Run Schoolhouse. Some folks even claim the building to be haunted, and employees will even share stories of strange occurrences. But don’t let that scare you away, this building has been lovingly restored, modernized, and is home to some of the best wine you can find in the Appalachians.

Tastings

The tasting room is warm and inviting – a perfect place to tickle your palate with the variety of warm reds and crisp white wines. They also have wine slushies! There is no better way to cool off after a hot summer day on nearby Watauga Lake.

Gathering Spaces

After the tasting, grab a glass of your favorite wine and enjoy the outdoor entertainment. Watauga Lake Winery has live music on the gorgeous stone patio and outdoor stage. There’s even a fire pit to keep away the chill of the mountain air in the fall. If you are feeling hungry, enjoy a freshly made wood-fired pizza. For something a little lighter, they offer charcuterie baskets and soups that change daily.

Watauga Lake Winery also serves as a gathering place, hosting activities throughout the week such as painting, yoga, and special celebration dinners on holidays and other occasions.

The Vineyard

Just down the road is the Villa Nove Vineyard. If you are looking for a special place to have a business meeting or party, the winery or the nearby vineyard are available for rent during the week.

Before you leave, be sure to check out the store. You can get a bottle (or two) to take home as well as a wide variety of Watauga Lake Winery merch.
