Tour of Washington County, TN

March 25, 2017 @ 8:00 am - 4:00 pm

On Saturday, March 25, 2017, from 8 am to 4 pm, the Jonesborough Genealogical Society will host its third Tour of Washington County, Tennessee, where participants will see historic sites and sounds across our amazing county. Elaine Cantrell, JGS Director, and Chad Bailey, first Vice President and Projects Coordinator, will be the tour guides across an eight-hour tour route, which will include much of the southwestern part of the county, including a ride on the Old State Route 34 (or the Bristol-Memphis Highway) through the communities of Telford, Washington College, Broylesville, and Limestone before arriving in Chuckey City, or what is know as Chuckey today, and Earnestville. Then participants will take the scenic John Sevier Highway (Highway 107), through the communities of Corby Bridge, Smith Bridge, Liberty, Mount Carmel, South Central, Mauktown, and Chuckey Valley, before arriving at the “Crossroads” (Highway 81 South and Highway 107) and heading to Embreeville, and Garber’s Depot (Garber) before arriving back in Tennessee’s Oldest Town.

Creeks, cemeteries, homes, historic sites, and so much more will be pointed out along the way. Stories will be told and fun will be had! Much of this tour will be based on Elaine Cantrell’s historic survey of Washington County, Tennessee, which contains 24 volumes of photographs of sites and sounds of Washington County.

This tour will begin at the Jonesborough Visitor Center, 117 Boone Street, Jonesborough, at 8 am. Please arrive at the Jonesborough Visitor Center at least 15 minutes prior to loading. Parking will be available on a first come first serve basis at the Jonesborough Visitor Center in the left parking lot closest to the library and a secondary parking lot is behind the Visitor Center closest to the Jonesborough Post Office. The bus will be loaded and leave promptly at 8 am. Participants will take a tour of the George Gillespie House, 1792 Stone House Lane, Limestone, where Doug and Donna Ledbetter will share their home with participants. In addition, lunch will be served at David Crockett Birthplace State Park, 1245 Davy Crockett Park Road, Limestone. While at the park, participants will be able to see the Crockett Cabin Raising event that will be taking place on March 24-26, 2017, where park staff and members of the community are building a new replica cabin while wearing 18th century attire and using 18th century tools. After lunch, Wilhemina Williams with the Earnest Family Association will provide a riding bus tour of the Earnestville Community as well as a stop and tour of the Henry Earnest Fort House, 1600 Chuckey Pike, Chuckey.
Cost is $50 for JGS members and $55 for public. 30 seats are available.
