Warriors Path State Park: Summer in the Park
MONDAY, MAY 27
4:30 PM POPSICLE STICK WEAVING – Appalachia has a rich tradition of
weaving. Come try your hand at a simple weaving project using popsicle
sticks and yarn. Meet at the Campfire Circle, east end of the main
campground (main bath house if it’s raining).
7:00 PM CANDLE MAKING – Imagine living before electricity. People needed
candles to see in their homes at night. Come out to the Open Air Chapel,
and learn how to make them! (At the main bath house if it rains).
8:30 PM BAT & MOTH – Use your ears and your “bug hunting” skills! See if you
could survive a night out in the woods and fields — if you were a flying
bug! Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or pool entrance if it is raining.
TUESDAY, MAY 28
10:30 AM PAINT AND PLANT – Here is the chance to both paint a tiny clay pot,
and then plant a native seed in it. Meet at the Open Air Chapel (main
bath house if it’s raining).
12 NOON ANIMAL GROUPS BINGO – Discover new insights into our unique and
different animal groups. Afterwards, you’ll use your newfound knowledge
to win a game of animal groups bingo. Meet at Open Air Chapel. In case
of rain, meet at the main bath house.
1:30 PM ST. BRIGID’S CROSS – Many Irish settlers made their home in
Appalachia, bringing some of their own customs. Come learn the
traditional Irish craft of making a St. Brigid’s cross. Meet at the
Campfire Circle (main bath house if it’s raining).
3:00 PM CORN HUSK DOLLS CIRCLE – Come listen in to a traditional Native
American tale on the origins of the corn husk doll. Then learn how to
make one for yourself! Meet at Open Air Chapel. In case of rain, meet at
the main bath house.
4:00 PM NATURE GAMES – Don’t miss the natural fun – for the young or the
young-at-heart! Meet at the Open Air Chapel for some lively games about
our natural world. If it’s raining, meet at the main bath house.
5:00 PM LAKESIDE WALK SAFETY TALK – We will take a stroll through the
woods while discussing how to enjoy both the woods and the lake safely
and responsibly. Meet at the Main Bathhouse.
6:00 PM EVENING STROLL – Let’s wake up our senses to evening in the forest.
Meet at the main bath house for a short, refreshing hike
9:00 PM NIGHT HIKE – Let’s enjoy watching and listening for the creatures of
the night as we wander through their wonderful nocturnal habitats.
Bring a flashlight, good hiking shoes, and a sense of adventure. We will
meet at the camp store and walk down to the trailhead together.
NOTE: All activities meet in and near the park’s Main Campground, unless otherwise specified.
WEDNESDAY, MAY 29
10:30 PM SCAVENGER HUNT – This will be a fun, lighthearted activity to help you
explore the park. Meet at the Open Air Chapel (main bath house if it’s raining).
11:30 AM CREEK CRITTERS – Come find out what critters are hidden in the waters of
East Tennessee and what they can tell us about the health of our water. Wear
closed-toe shoes and be prepared to get wet! Meet at the Boundless Playground.
1:30 PM PARACORD KEYCHAIN – Have you ever wanted to make your own paracord
keychain? Here is your opportunity to do so – meet at the Campfire Circle (main
bath house if it’s raining).
3:30 PM READ-A-LONG & HIKE – Share a discussion and story about some of the local
wildlife at Warriors Path State Park then enjoy a hike by the lakeside looking
and listening for critters in the park. Meet at the Open Air Chapel.
5:00 PM OLD SCHOOL PAINTING – Let’s take a step into the past and create a work
of art using the nature around us for tools. Meet at the main bath house.
6:00 PM NOISY TOYS – How did the pioneer children make music or noise? Make your
very own “musical” instrument with a few simple things from nature. Meet at
the Open Air Chapel to create some “beautiful music.” In case of rain, meet at
the main bath house.
7:30 PM FINGER WEAVING – For those who came to the popsicle stick weaving
program, here is another type of weaving you can do with your hands. Meet at
the Open Air Chapel (main bath house if it’s raining).
9:00 PM NIGHT SOUNDS – Nature is full of sounds when the sun goes down! Some
seem eerie, but there’s no need to be nervous. Come find out whose noise is
whose. Meet at the Open Air Chapel for a short slide show of the creatures who
“talk” in the night! (At the former pool entrance if it is raining.) NOTE – there
will be a special NIGHT SOUNDS contest for children after the show.
THURSDAY, MAY 30
9:30 AM WAKE UP WALK – Let’s wake up our senses to morning in the forest. Meet at
the main bath house for a refreshing morning walk.
12 NOON JUNIOR RANGERS: TRAIL CLEANUP – Make our park a cleaner, healthier
environment! You’ll make a big difference for our earth, and begin to earn your
Junior Ranger badge. Meet at the main bath house. Be prepared to get dirty!
2:00 PM KNOT TYING – Knot tying is an important skill in many outdoor activities.
Come learn some basic knots at the Open Air Chapel (main bath house if it’s
raining).
1:30 PM LEATHERCRAFT – Discover the long history of leathercrafting, then make
your own custom leather tag. We’ll provide the leather and tools, you provide the
creativity. (Limit one tag per person please). Meet at the main bath house.
5:00 PM BEAD CRAFT – Native peoples along the Warriors’ Path used beads,and so can
you! Find out about Cherokee beading, then make your own personalized bead
jewelry. Meet at the Campfire circle, east end of the main campground. In case
of rain, meet at the main bath house.
7:00 PM SEED RACES – Wind, water, and animals carry seeds of new trees and plants
all across the land. Our “wind” can help too! Meet at the Open Air Chapel to
show off your “hot air” and plant some new life. Meet at the main bath house if it
rains.
THURSDAY, CONTINUED
8:00 PM POPSICLE YARN BUTTERFLIES – Find out more about our native
butterflies, then make a butterfly-themed craft. Meet at the Campfire Circle,
east end of the main campground (main bath house if it’s raining).
9:00 PM WILDLIFE TRACKING – You can be a wildlife detective! Learn to read the
tracks, scats, and other signs of our nearby wild creatures. Meet at the Open Air
Chapel to meet our 4-legged “wildlife ambassador” and enjoy his tracking
lesson.(In case of rain, meet at the main bath house.)
FRIDAY, MAY 31
8:00 AM BREAKFAST WITH THE BIRDS – Come wake up to our feathered neighbors.
Meet at the main bath house to begin a stroll through bird country! (The first 12
people to come get free doughnut & juice!)
10:00 AM SINKING WATER HIKE – Take a hike to explore the wonders of a wetland
habitat, and all that the water in our park has to offer. Meet at the Sinking
Waters Trail parking lot on Cedar Branch Rd.
11:30 AM SPOTLIGHT STROLL – Let’s shine our light on some bright natural
discoveries. Meet at the camp store to begin a short, sunlit hike
1:00 PM CREATE A BIRD – Let’s “listen in” to some native bird songs,. then create your
own “crafty” bird. Meet at the main campground bath house.
2:00 PM DIY BIRDFEEDER – Want to help your bird neighbors get their morning
breakfast? Come build a peanut butter and pinecone bird feeder with park staff.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel (main bath house if it’s raining).
3:30 PM TREE FRISBEE – Come have a flying good time, and find out more about park
trees at the same time! Meet at the Open Air Chapel. We have plenty of frisbees!
5:00 PM LEAVE NO TRACE – Find out how you can help keep our wilderness wild! Join
staff for a discussion on outdoor ethics and a wilderness game of “What Would
You Do.” Meet at the Open Air Chapel, or main bath house if it’s raining.
7:00 PM TAG – You’re it! You’re the one we need to make all these great tag games work.
Meet at the Open Air Chapel for all kinds of tag games. If it is raining, meet at
the main bath house.
9:00 PM CAMPFIRE – What a perfect combination: A dark night, a crackling fire, and
some local, traditional ghost tales. Meet at the campfire circle, east end of the
main campground. If it is raining, we’ll have an indoor “campfire” at the (former)
pool entrance.
SATURDAY, JUNE 1
Celebrate NATIONAL TRAILS DAY with a day full of trail activities

SUNDAY, JUNE 2
9:00 AM WORSHIP SERVICE – Enjoy a peaceful morning worship service at the Open
Air Chapel, or at the pool entrance if it is raining. Sponsored by the Colonial
Heights Baptist Church.
