Bluff City: Water Views & Local Stops

Bluff City may be small, but there’s a lot packed into this corner of Sullivan County.

Water is part of everyday life here. With Boone Lake, the South Holston River, and South Holston Lake all nearby, this gives plenty of opportunities to get outside. Then add in local restaurants, a flea market worth traveling for, and historic sites, and it’s easy to turn a quick stop into a full day.

Grab Breakfast Before Heading Out

Many Bluff City mornings start at Hickory Tree Grocery.

If you ask, most people will tell you the same thing. Breakfast and burgers are what Hickory Tree Grocery does best. Their homemade biscuits and country breakfast plates keep the mornings busy, and at lunchtime it’s burgers on the grill and daily specials for just about everyone coming through the door.

It’s also a convenient stop for drinks, snacks, and ice. Whether you’re fishing, boating, or simply exploring Bluff City, Hickory Tree Grocery has long been one of those local stops that people recommend.

Take the Long Way Around the Lake

Across from Boone Lake, South Fork Coffee is an easy fix for a morning coffee craving. Grab a hot latte or iced drink to go, and take a short walk over to the Bluff City Boardwalk and Pavilion.

The boardwalk runs along the water and gives you an easy view of the lake. Some mornings you can catch fog hanging over the water.

It’s a simple stop, but often one of the more memorable parts of visiting Bluff City.

Spend Some Time on the Water

With so much water nearby, it doesn’t take long to end up outside.

South Holston Dam is one of the better-known spots in the area, with views from the overlook that are worth the stop. You can take in the scenic views or walk around Osceola Island at the Weir Dam.

If you’d rather be on the water, River Run Angling offers guided fishing trips for all experience levels. Local guides know the river well and help you make the most of the day.

See What You Can Find

The Tri-Cities Flea Market has been a weekend tradition for years.

Open Saturdays and Sundays from 6 AM- 5 PM, people come looking for antiques, collectibles, tools, furniture, handmade goods, and just about everything in between. Even if you’re not shopping for anything specific, it’s easy to spend an hour or two wandering the aisles to see what catches your eye.

You never really know what you’ll find, which is part of the fun.

A Look Back at the Region’s Story

Bluff City also puts you close to some of Sullivan County’s most interesting historic sites.

Rocky Mount State Historic Site, in nearby Piney Flats, shares what life was like on the Tennessee frontier in the late 1700s. The site is set up like a working homestead, and you can walk through the buildings and see demonstrations that show how everyday life played out during that time.

The Holston Heritage Museum tells the story of the Holston River Valley. You’ll find exhibits that walk through the area’s history and the people who shaped it. Guided tours help bring it all together, whether you’re stopping in on your own or visiting with a group.

More Than a Stop Along the Way

Bluff City feels best when you take your time with it.

Have breakfast with the locals, walk along the lake, browse the flea market, tour historic sites, or spend the day on the water. There’s no shortage of ways to spend a day here.
