The Storytelling Capital

On a warm October weekend in 1973, the first National Storytelling Festival was held. Hay bales and wagons were the stages, and audience and tellers together didn’t number more than 60. It was tiny, but something happened that weekend that forever changed our culture, this traditional art form, and Tennessee’s Oldest Town. The Festival, now in its 53rd year and acclaimed as one of the Top 100 Events in North America,conjures up 15,000 visitors from all fifty states and numerous countries. There’s a certain magic about the National Storytelling Festival, a magic that shuts off smart phones and holds folks spellbound in the art of well-told stories by dozens of the world’s best storytellers.

Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion Celebrates 25 Years in 2026

We once called it “the little festival that could.” And it did. Born from a grassroots spirit and a handful of dreamers, the seeds planted in the early days of Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion blossomed into a beloved homecoming that inspired the transformation of Historic Downtown Bristol, TN-VA, and sparked renewed energy, creativity, and region-wide community pride. The festival is the modern-day celebration of the 1927 Bristol Sessions recordings held in the Birthplace of Country Music. Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion is renowned for its diverse acts, from established headliners to up-and-coming artists, and showcases the best Appalachian roots music the region has to offer. 

Since 2001, the heartbeat of Bristol echoes through the streets each September, calling friends, families, and artists home to a place where inspiration runs deep and music never fades. Joy and discovery have no borders, and the songs shared become memories kept. September 11-13, 2026 is a milestone Bristol Rhythm & Roots Reunion for 25 years of music, love and belonging that brings connection with each other and to our place for three days, in two states for one reunion. Birthplace of Country Music Museum Honors 1927 Bristol Sessions, Celebrating 100 Years in 2027

The Smithsonian-affiliated, award-winning Birthplace of Country Music Museum, which opened in 2014, welcomes thousands of visitors each year from around the world. The museum tells the story of the 1927 Bristol Sessions recordings, explores how evolving sound technology shaped their success, and highlights how Bristol’s rich musical heritage lives on in today’s music.

Through multiple theater experiences, interactive displays, and artifacts – along with various educational programs, music performances, and community events – the exciting story of these recording sessions and their far-reaching influence comes alive. Rotating exhibitions are featured in the Special Exhibits Gallery throughout the year as well as featuring Radio Bristol’s live radio exhibit. The museum also houses a research collection, including an extensive digital archive.
